Hey..

I'm a young Folky myself and I've been thinking about starting up a youngsters type session weekend. Where yougsters can gather and spend the weekend playing, singing and so on. I'm not sure of a venu and other details yet but I was wondering what interest there would be?

If it happens then it will be in the lancashire Area. Any ideas on places it could be held that could provide like a main hall and lodgings would be appreciated! Also if anyone would be interested in helping out by doing workshops during the weekend etc etc...

Hi Simon a venue could be found at a youth hostel. They rent the whole hostel to groups over the winter at a very reasonable cost. Hostels can house between 6 and 96 people depending on the size of your group. Local catters of your age group would be Firecat, Jezabel, Sam Pirt, Ian Stephenson.

As a young folky (26) we organise a lot of these weekends (however thety are in scotland)although you are welcome to join. We usually go away for the weekend to a small hotel or a pub with accomodation close by. I'm not sure if you fancy this as I don't know exactly how young you are. But all the above suggestions are good hostels etc. Forming a society in college is a good idera and probably allows you to get sponsors. In my university years ago we got a VERY VERY large sum of money from Toyota (bless their little hearts) to promote irish music and language.

I live in dundee now but every few months or so we organis e sessions where we meet up with friends frae Edinburgh & Aberdeen. The last one was in Dougie MacLeans in Dunkeld. I think the next one is Glen Clova. They are usually in that general direction as it is fairly central to the threee cities involved.

Well I used to be in Folk group at my old school and it didn't really work in the end. Everything faded out because I don't find many Folk people in my area unfortunatly! Well i personally am 19 so I don't mind singing in pubs!! ;0)

As for =0) Yeah that's my own personal smiley I invented I just liked it better than the :-) I think it looks more human if that's possible!! lol Plus I have a big nose!! hehehe =0D

Sorry weepiper although a squad does come up from Edinburgh, the vast majority are from Dundee and Aberdeen. So no I don't konw them. Where do they play in Edinburgh?

jock yes of course you are young enough. - ya auld bastard ;). Most of the crowd are in their twenties. But it certainly isn't exclusive. There are all ages represented. It tends to be a young crowd because some of us went to college in Ireland together and by chance ended up living in Scotland.

BE WARNED though. It is a big crowd last time (20+) which while good craic does make for a noisy session. When we get around to sorting out a date and venue I'll post it here so anyone interested can come along if they wish.

I may well have met them at some stage. I don't normally play in Edinburgh. But I could have run into them in dunkeld or somewhere like that. The names don't ring a bell at the moment. It's still early in the week ;)

I remember one night in Dunkeld we went to a party after in someones house and Gordan Duncan was there. Well tanked up, but played some cracking tunes even though he could hardly stand.

the Ben Nevis in Argyle Street, Glasgow, has a weekly session on a Wednesday evening which is almost entirely supported by Young Whippersnappers. Traditional Scottish stuff - (nobody knows any slow tunes, apparently).. high quality...

The Ben Nevis is along the far end of Argyle Street, towards the Kelvin Hall end..

It's neither of the above realy Roger, I love all the folkclubs I drift to & from & have made some realy great friends of all ages, but sometime It would be nice to meet up with others my age (I tend to stick out being 20yrs younger than the rest of the room.) Though I can report that last Month in Dorchester I wasnot the youngest There!!! I Teenager no less turned up, I'm looking forward to seeing if she returns thismonth as she said she would :)

Whoever made the warning and for whatever reason, it is a sensible one to bear in mind. Especially when you are making an appeal to only young people and making arrangements for meetings........

I wish it were no so but there are too many cases of people using such ruses and in truth if someone claims online to be 15/16 or whatever, there is no way to find out if this is true, until it is possibly too late.

All sounds great, i'm a young Folkie- only a singer though and it would be great to meet with some other young folkies. I've come across very few young unaccompanied singers- but I can understand why, considering the opinion of a lot of young people of a non folkie persuasion.

Most of what I sing is traditional, with a particular liking for the poems of kipling which have been set to tunes. At the moment i'm living and working in Vietnam as a volunteer, but hope to return later this year to Beverley, East Yorkshire (near 'ull)

I for one am delighted to see a lot of younger people getting involved with folk music and very much welcome their participation in this forum.

BUT the advice to be careful is sound advice. There have been cases (one reported extensively here in Ireland yesterday) where people have been lured into nasty situations on the basis of people mis-representing themselves on the Internet. This is not meant as an accusation against anybody on this forum, and please don't take it as such. By all means have your get togethers and have a great time with the music - just do your be sure you know the information you are reading is for real.

I think it's a shame that this thread started out as well meant and a welcome forum for the younger members to discuss get togethers. Most of us younger lot appreciate others that like folk music as it's an unusual interest in our age group. I think advice could be put on other threads for meeting up because at the end of the day everyone's at risk, but we all just have to be careful. I don't think when there's talk of on mass get togethers at festivals that there's a massive risk - particularly as many of us are in our 20s. I also think it's a shame to put such a negative and unnecessary twist to the thread. It would be lovely to see the negative threads taken out and this to be a constant thread so that we had a forum to talk.

Please let us keep this going and without the bickering. And Pete ignore the comments and don't get upset by them - it's really not worth it.

My last thread seems to have got lost - what it said was that Fylde Festival has a Young Performers Competition, which seems like a pretty good starting point for a get-together.

This (or indeed any other festival gathering) would also answer the "safety on the internet" problem, in a positive way.

Some of us think that jazz does indeed have an image problem - but then I'm an older unregenerate folkie at heart. In truth, I'm not terribly certain about music unaccompanied by song..... what use is it? Other than driving people out of the pubs at Sidmouth?

What is every ones problem, Guest either concerned or provocative has made a valid point that as parents of children an invite to a event wherever it may be if accepted over the internet needs to be checked out. My kids enter sessions at festivals and hopefully we have checked them out first,remember youngsters have acces to all things these days as do the bad people.The plan of SBP is an admirable one and should be supported and encouraged a clarification of age group invited to the event would be helpful or children under an age must be accompianed by an adult. In these days of trouble on the internet with paedophiles best intentions can lead to hysteria.

This thread started off serving a valid purpose, that of encouraging networking between the new generation of folkies. From the tone of most of the postings identifying opportunities to make contact, most of you were already (almost automatically) making plans to do so in "safe" environments, which in itself argues an underlying awareness of the possible dangers of people misrepresenting themselves. And please don't be so ready to take offence, at those who followed the initial remark about safety by expressing genuine concern that our young people protect themselves. As a young person I am sure you must have been (probably more than you want to) been made aware of the need to do so for yourself. Even those of us who ain't quite so young anymore recognise the need to keep ourselves and our friends safe, and that people often misrepresent themselves online.
Why assume the remark was directed at you? You know you are not a paedophile and it is something which for those interested is simple enough to check and prove so just put it in the SEP (Somebody Else's Problem) catagory and ignore it as not worth your notice.

when vultuk - Simon (my son) - started this thread it was to try and get together with like minded young people who had an interest in making music - Fylde as mentioned does show an interest in promoting young people - but I feel this is done as a seperate to the Festival approach by a group of people who have and do work hard at getting people involved in music.... the sessions at Sidmouth have been great with an enthusiasm that came from inside and needed no prompting - real musicians enjoying playing together - I think this was the type of people Simon was trying to unite - there are many closet musicians/singers out there but maybe many are afraid to show interest in the music incase they are ridiculed by their peers?

I was sad to see this thread raise its head after a year and a half in such a negative way - maybe it's best to let it die and open a new thread if anyone out there feels there is an interest by young people in forming such groups?

Thank you john. Why tell them my trade? A good point there "Forgive, forget and move on" i like that idea.
As for festival sessions I probably will be at Sidmouth. (Unless the Ealing jazz festival clashes and we're booked) I would say that re-reading this thread the rough ages here are between 19 and 34+. we could have a mass get toghether at say one of the sessions. Leadfingers will be able to help me out here. He runs one of the sessions in town and we could tag on to that. For anybody younger than 19 (If they read this thread!) then they should come accompanied by an adult. Leadfingers is in cohorts with festival organisers so we could nab spare rehersal venues etc to play/jam. We could get in touch with the shooting roots guys as they run events/ showcases. They tend to be for younger people than our catchment age.

Will be willing to discuss issues arising by p.m or here.

Whoa there young Pete I am NOT in cahoots with Sidmouth Festival organisers at all,though I do have some inputinto the New Tavern session,and I am sure all you bright young things would be welcome in the Newt.We normally run twelve ish to three ish and eight ish to closing time, so come along and join in or come along and fill the gaps up. And keep an eye open for the Mudcat Session at a certain small friendly festival in the South Midlands .

Sorry my misunderstanding there Terry. Can't remember who told me you were. That's idle gossip for you!!! Anyway, thanks for the input at least now we have one place this festival year where we can all meet up. So if people here are happy to do that as a start we can build up meets/jams etc until other people put their ideas into the pot.

Like I said before, I'm old (ish) but only 16 in me head! Young folkies are keeping the music alive. Good luck to you. Having seen many young folkies, I can't help admire and be very jealous of their commitment and talent.I'm also quite safe to be around (usually) and young children are safe with me. ( I suppose they all say that) I do think children & young peple do need to be careful, and as (hopefully) responsible adults, we'll look out for them in this forum.

Some guests look to start fires, others pour petrol onto fires, and often hide behind annoniminity. In the time I've been on mudcat, probably about 4 years or more, I've learnt to take no notice of inflamatory remarks. I think some of us oldies? should be allowed around you younsters so we can learn things from you.So if you see an old viking watching, don't throw things at me, let me listen and learn.

Good idea! I can get terry in to help us again. He's a genuinely good person and always full of ideas.
We could meet up at terry's thing at the new tavern, then sort things out from there. The shooting roots thing at Sidmouth is for a younger age. we need to network between us, make contacts, help each other in performance etc.
so yes we should start the "Young Adults at Sidmouth thread." I will talk to terry this weekend and see what we can sort out!

Don't forget one of the best gatherings of Young Folkies, 13 to 22 I think, has to be the Folkworks Summer School, cost's a bit but from my info well worth it.
