Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: GUEST Date: 15 Oct 01 - 02:44 PM It was observed that "Colors/Colours" is folky. When I learned Wade Ward's "High Atmosphere" banjo tuning, which is an open C (ECGCD) and was experimenting with it, this tune just sort of showed up on its own. I think the feel of the tune matches the feel of the tuning amazingly well. CC |

Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Oct 01 - 01:38 PM Catch the Wind is one of my favorite love songs of all time. Simply beautiful words and can also be sung as an impassioned lament, a plea almost. Beautiful song. Spaw |

Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: Sooz Date: 14 Oct 01 - 10:31 AM Mike and I still sing To try for the sun and it goes down really well in Folk Clubs. We've known each other since our years put together counted thirty but now the sum comes out to exactly one hundred. I haven't decided yet if thats depressing or not! Donovan certainly wrote some good songs. |

Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: Jeanie Date: 13 Oct 01 - 08:07 AM What about "Jennifer Juniper" ? That was always my favourite. A schoolfriend and I went to one of those recording booths they used to have at railway stations to make a record of our highly scurrilous spoof "cover" version, "Jonathon Juniper", calling ourselves "Violet Val and Japonica Jean". I made a purple and pink psychedelic sleeve for this masterpiece - which I still have, sadly nothing to play it on any more. I would post the lyrics on Mudcat, but dare not for fear of legal reprisals. Really. Such is the mind of your average teenage girl .. and I expect said Jonathon thought we were so sweet. What year was that ? I reckon 1967 ? I confess to having worn a home-made crocheted "Donovan cap". He was my hero and the main reason I first struggled to play guitar (and still struggling). |
Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: M.Ted Date: 12 Oct 01 - 11:41 PM Don't forget "Catch the Wind"--His early songs were great! "Try for the Sun" was the first song that I ever figured out--I learned to play many of his songs, even the ones that don't work very well when someone who is not Donovan plays them--Fly TransLove Airways, anyone? |

Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Oct 01 - 11:04 PM Well, 53, there are Donovan songs that only Donovan can sing - "Sunshine Superman" is a good example. Then there are some that seem to be good for anyone to sing, and "Colors" is one of those. It's a simple song, but it's close to being a classic. And yes, it brings back memories of a very rich, idealistic time of my life. At the time the song came out, I had been in a Catholic seminary for a few years, and was planning to be a lifelong celibate. Still, I didn't mind dreaming of yellow-haired true loves. That changed. I was married to one brunette for 20 years, and I'm soon to marry another. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Oct 01 - 10:51 PM Ooops - I missed that this was a commentary, and thought it was a lyrics request. And yes, I think I'd call "Colours" one of Donovan's songs written in the "folk" style. Dang. I hate it when I'm dumb. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: 53 Date: 12 Oct 01 - 10:43 PM thank you for that info on the words joe. bob |
Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Oct 01 - 10:38 PM Hi, Bob - I suppose it's posted somewhere at Mudcat, but a really good place to look for pop lyrics is Lyrics World. Nope - isn't there. But it is in the Digital Tradition - as "Colors" - Click here. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: colours by donovan From: Mark Cohen Date: 12 Oct 01 - 10:38 PM Amen to that. So does "Try for the Sun", for me. I remember singing that one when I was 15! ("Our years put together counted thirty...") Aloha, Mark |
