Have them, Julie - the chords should work, may have misheard a word or three, though.

Hard Light    David Mallett

(G)    (Bm)    (C)    (G)       (Bm)    (C)    (D)
(G)    (Bm)    (C)    (G)       (Bm)    (C)    (G)
It´s so warm and it´s (Bm)so nice
To (C)lie here in your (G)harbor, (C)(G)
And you tell me (Bm)all the things
That you (C)know I need to (D)hear.
(G) Let us rest and (Bm)do our best
To for(C)get the coming (G)morning,
(C)´Cause the (G)hard light of the (Bm)truth of things,
´Tis the (C)only (D)thing I (G)fear. (C)(G)    (C) (G)

You can walk in (Bm)satin shoes
And (C)I can march, a (G)warrior, (C)(G)
Straight into your (Bm)waiting arms
Where (C)virtue has no (D)price.
(G) Together at the (Bm)birth of love,
The (C)season falls a(G)round us, (C)(G)
So make it last, the (Bm)night must pass
Through the (C)fire (D) and the (G)ice.
(Em)       (D)    (Em)       (D)    (C)
(Em)       (D)    (Em)       (D)    (G)

´Cause I have seen the (Bm)lonely ones
Who (C)stand on in this (G)corner, (C)(G)
Homeless in their ho(Bm)mes
Where days are (C)dark and hearts do (D)die,
(C)And I´ve (G)heard tales of for(Bm)ever,
And I can (C)see what we are (G)after, (C)(G)
But in between the (Bm)laughter,
I hear (C)echoes (D) of good(G)bye.

Because it´s so nice and (Bm)so warm
To (C)lie here in your (G)harbor, (C)(G)
And you tell me (Bm)all the things
That you (C)know I need to (D)hear.
(G) So let us rest and (Bm)do our best
To for(C)get the coming (G)morning,
(C)´Cause the (G)hard light of the (Bm)truth of things,
´Tis the (C)only (D)thing I (G)fear.

Sweet Bird Of Youth    David Mallett

Capo 2nd fret

(G)    (C)    (G)    (D)    (G)(hold)
Sweet bird of (G)youth, don´t pass me by,
Don´t take the one thing left for time to (C)try,
Don´t leave me (G)grounded, teach me to (D)fly,
Sweet bird of (G)youth, (D) don´t pass me (G)by. (hold)

Flower of (G)spring, don´t let me down,
Don´t let your petals fall upon the (C)ground,
Don´t let your (G)bright green apples turn to (D)brown,
Flower of (G)spring, (D) don´t let me (G)down.

Turn back the yea(D)rs, turn back the (G)time,
Bring back the (C)pleasures that once brought me peace of (G)mind,
Take me away u(G4)pon (G)some jour(G4)ney (G)through (Gadd2)the (Em)past,
Because my (C)race is run and my time´s been done too (D)fast. (hold)

And rolling (G)river, take me away,
I heard you travel along to brighter (C)days,
And I´d like to (G)ride upon the crest of some young (D)wave,
Rolling (G)river, (D) take me a(G)way.   (Em) (D) (G)    (Em) (D) (G)
(Bm)    (C) (D/A) (C) (G/B) (Am) (G) (D)    (hold)

Lovely song. A few small suggestions here:

Phil Brown    David Mallett

(G) I knew a (C)painter (D)in my younger (Em)days,
A (Bm)man who lived with (C)brushes, sticks and (G)stones. (D/F#)
(G)His days were filled with (C)canvas scenes
Of (D)browns and blues and (Em)meadow greens,
And the (Bm)world just passed on (C)by his (G)door.
He (D)lived, but (D7)lived a(G)lone. (G4) (G) (G4)

And (G)he'd come to (D)town with his (Em)old wool hat pulled (Bm)down,
Sur(C)rounded by the (G)dogs that were his (D)friends.
At (G)times too drunk to (D)stand, he'd (Em)shake familiar hands(Bm)
(C) And sit around the (G)Esso station 'til his (D)loneliness would (G)end.

And I knew a (C)painter, (D)in my reckless (Em)days,
(Bm)Bristle bearded and (C)humble on his (G)feet. (D/F#)
A (G)sympathetic, (C)sad old elf,
He (D)knew me better than I (Em)knew myself
In the (Bm)last days of my (C)boy(G)hood,
In the (D)time u(D7)pon the (G)street. (G4) (G) (G4)

And (G)long through the (D)night, a (Em)faded yellow (Bm)light
Would (C)burn inside the (G)room where he would (D)stand.
And (G)play the old vic(D)trola (Em) and drink his rusty (Bm)wine
And con(C)duct the Mozart (G)music with his (D)heart and (D7)shaking (G)hand. (G4) (G)

(D) But he could paint a picture, (G) and he could capture life,
(D) And no one ever (D/C)felt things more than (G)he. (G4) (G) (Gadd9)
(D) He was never much for (D/C)roses, (G) he'd sooner (D/F#)paint the(Em) thorns, (Em/D)
'Cause he (C)found a keener beauty there that no one else could (D)see. (hold)

(G) Someone bought the (C)house he lived in
(D) And painted up the (Em)room he died in,
And (Bm)swept away the cob(C)webs and the (G)dust from off the floor.(D)
The (G)children laugh, the (C)seasons run,
Young (D)lovers roll in (Em)midnight fun.
But (Bm)no one loves more (C)than the (G)one
Who (D)paints the (D7)world no (G)more.

And long through the (D)night, a (Em)faded yellow (Bm)light
Would (C)burn inside the (G)room where he would (D)stand.
And (G)play the old vic(D)trola (Em) and drink his rusty (Bm)(hold)wine
And con(C)duct the Mozart (G)music with his (D)heart and (D7)shaking (G)hand.
(D) (D7) (G) (C) (D) (D7) (G) (C) (D) (G) (Em) (C) (D) (G)

Couple of bars of Mozart´s 'A Little Night Music' there as an outro, I hum the strains.

Yeah, I nearly cried, I'm not ashamed to show emotion like that with a good song. You know the sort of thing where your nasal hairs start to prickle and you sort of choke up. Steve Goodman's 'My Old Man' gets me every time I play it - since my old Dad went, I can't really finish it on stage too well.

First time I ever heard it I nearly cried.

Great writing...pared down to the essentials to convey emotion.

He had no friends, just the dogs who followed him to town. He was the town drunk.

I have no idea why, but from the first time I heard the song I pictured Phil living in a converted Esso station--not unheard of up there in Me. But then where did the friends come from? Sort of a contextural Mondegreen, I suppose.

I play it in G, no capo. Dave has the busiest fingers I ever saw, man can he pick.

Hey Kendall!

glad you came in with the correction. Funny, I was taking the lyrics straight from the notes from "Parallel Lives" and my mind still over-rode my eyes. Of course it makes little sense unless sung in the correct way.

By the way, do you play it capoed as I suggest, or in A? I ask because I chose the way I did because I noticed the non-tonic base note in the E chord. Still I wonder if all the hammer-ons he does fall to the first position A chord.

From: John Hardly

Key of A but played with a capo on the second fret and fingered as if in the key of G (all chords listed below reflect this)
Constant up-down gentle strumming pattern throughout.

Phil Brown
David Mallett

[G]…and I knew a [C] painter, [D/F#] in my [Em] younger days
A [C]man who lived with brushes, sticks and [G]stones. [D/F#]
His [G] days were filled with [C]canvas scenes
Of [D] browns and blues and [Em]meadow greens
And the [Bm] world just [C] passed on by his [G]door
He [D]lived, but lived [G]alone.

And he'd come to [D]town with his [Em]old wool hat pulled [Bm]down
[C] Surrounded buy the [G]dogs that were his [D]friends
At [G] times too drunk to [D]stand, he'd [Em]shake familiar [Bm] hands
And [C]sit around the [G] Esso station 'til his [D] loneliness would [G] mend.

And I knew a painter, in my reckless days
Bristle-bearded, humble on his feet
A sympathetic, sad old elf,
He knew me better than I knew myself
In the last days of my boyhood
In my time upon the street

And long through the night
A faded yellow light
Would burn inside the room where he would stand
And play the old Victrola and drink his rusty wine
And conduct the Mozart music with his heart and shaking hand

[D] But he could paint a [C] picture, and [G] he could capture life
And [D] no one ever [C] felt things more than [G] he
[D] He was never [C] much for roses, he'd [G] rather (sooner) paint the [Em] thorns
'Cause he found a [C] keener beauty there that no one else could [D] see

Someone boarded up the house he lived in
Painted up the room he died in
Swept away the cobwebs and the dust from off the floor
The children laugh, the seasons run
Young lovers roll in midnight fun
But no one loves more that the one
Who paints the world no more

And all through the night
A faded yellow light
Would burn inside the room where he would stand
And play the old Victrola
And drink his rusty wine
And conduct the Mozart music
With his heart and shaking hand
