Here's another work related challenge for all you mudcatters. To keep the kids entertained in the late Autumn term we set up an Advent callender quiz for them. Every day they get a new problem to solve and the first winner of the day gets their name on a list and is rewarded with chocolate. Last year we did the theme of festive food of the world and wrote the clues in foreign languages starting with English and ending up with Chinese! with progressive difficulty.

This year we have chosen winter music and intend to do a guess the song title game. However the clues will just be notes from the opening few bars of the song. We will start with things like Jingle Bells but I want to get more complex towards the end with something really obscure - anyone know anything suitable for Gamalan for example. The weirder the better and in particular anything that can be written down in an unconventional way eg like percussion!

These are by Stan Rogers on his Northwest Passage CD. Canol Road involves someone freezing to death, so that might not work with children.

As English is to Mandarin Chinese I am looking for the equivilent comparison to Jingle Bells!!!

You could try "Winter" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons...go for baroque! (sorry) Or if you wanted to be sneaky (which it sounds like you do), you could find something by the Paul Winter Consort.

On a hunch, I just did a Google search on John Cage...sure enough, he wrote a piece called "Winter Music": it is out of print but the link will give you info on a recording on Angel from Japan. I've never heard that particular piece, but I imagine it would be hard to find something much farther "out there" than Cage.

Judy Collins had a song on one of her early albums with the first line "Out under a winter sky..." I'm not sure of the title ["Winter Sky." perhaps], but the song would fit.

"Hot Buttered Rum" was written by Tommy Thompson of the Red Clay Ramblers. This thread has a discussion, along with several versions of the lyrics. Not long ago Bryan Bowers popped into the Mudcat to let people know that despite what it says in the Digital Tradition, this beautiful song was written by Tommy and not by him. I can't find the thread, though.
