Subject: Name my new kitten? From: Morticia Date: 15 Oct 01 - 05:41 AM So, we got a foundling kitten from Bron at the weekend ( Llanstock 2).She found her on a rubbish tip and christened her Harry as the tip was called Potter's.However, when we got her her home we found we had trouble referring to her as Harry and worried she might get gender confusion. She is very tiny, tortoishell and grubby white ( she will insist on playing in the coal scuttle) and still has blue eyes.Any ideas before I take her to the vet for a check up and have to confess that she is un-named? |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: KingBrilliant Date: 15 Oct 01 - 06:14 AM Ramekin's a brilliant name!!! Morticia you're right about the gender confusion problem. Hammerite's kittens are called Pots (Potsy) and Pans (Pansy). And despite the fact that Pots is tortoiseshell (all torts are female) and Pans is a failed ginger (most gingers are male) - we still managed to call the girl Potsy and the boy Pansy! It has had terrible effects. Poor Pansy is a complete wimp. While Potsy is a tom-boy, or would that be tom-tom? Anyways - my vote goes to Ramekin. Kris |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 15 Oct 01 - 08:33 AM Ah, but the thing about Schrodinger's cat was that you couldn't know its colour and its name at the same time. Or something. |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,jockmorris Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:00 AM All cats get called something like 'yergetoutofhereyoubastard' so no real need for a name:-) Katie would be good, as it sounds like she'll be constantly in trouble and we'll be hearing about what Katie did and what Katie did next. Whatever she gets called she's one lucky cat for finding a home with you. Scott |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:03 AM Let's see, I've had cats named Tractor (when he purred, he sounded like someone plowing the back 40), Peppersass ("pepper sauce" - the name of the first engine on the Mt. Washington Cog Railway), Calliope (goddess of noise), and Inquiry (cuz his tail was usually in the shape of a question mark). Current cats include Mortimer (he came with that name), Banjo, Creamsicle and Sabine (she came with that name, too, along with her brother Griffin who's gone missing). Bat Goddess |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:38 AM Yagerroffoutovit is common.... I always wanted one called Edie as in Ediepus... Bast is good, but she might get delusions of grandeur. Hang on, she's a cat.... how can they not be grand?! How about Banwy? Or Hastings? (Oct 14th is the anniversary of the battle of Hastings... useless fact for the day....) Can't wait to meet her.... may be down sooner than you think! LTS |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Morticia Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:57 AM Bugger me, Gargoyle, I could have sworn at the top of the page it says lyrics, forum and chat....and the thread title is pretty clear.....why open it?Unless you wanted a quick whine of course....in which case, glad to be of service. Thanks for the suggestions....I've fished her out of so many places she shouldn't be this morning, I'm inclining toward calling her Loki |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:04 AM Loki is perfect! Gargoyle is pretty good too... I'm sure she will end up making a nuisance of herself somewhere! LTS |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Gervase Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:05 AM Sounds like she was lucky not to end up in the pot - so how's about "Kitten Tikka"? ...sorry, I'll get me coat!... |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:09 AM Gervase, you missed a great weekend, hope yours was worth it! and yes, I'd get me coat if I were you.... As for Garg's suggestion of 'bio-hazard' or 'blood borne pathogene' I guess s/he's thinking of pigeons. They carry more diseases than your average sewer rat, and aren't really nice to cuddle.... sound familiar??? LTS |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Bert Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:37 AM You can't name a cat properly without seeing it, if she plays in the coal scuttle, you might try Smudge or Coal'ole if they fit. Our cats are named Millennium, M&m and Tweedle Dummer. Each of them firmly refuses to answer to any name other than 'Here kitty, kitty, kitty'. When we had three dogs as well, the cats would also answer to any of the dog's names, as would the other two dogs, who also would answer to 'Here kitty, kitty, kitty'. |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: The_one_and_only_Dai Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:42 AM Never was a truer word spoken. Old Jethro would answer to ANYTHING one said with a similar cadence, such as 'scumbag', 'ratface' or 'abscess'. My current cat arrived with the name of 'Molly' and only responds to high-pitched squeaks. |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Micca Date: 15 Oct 01 - 10:56 AM Bearing in mind the household in which she now resides, how about Mus (pronounced Muss to rhyme with Puss) as in Mus-cat de Beaume de Venise? because it is sweet and gives a little wine every now and then? |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:31 AM I'm not a cat person but... My sister-in -law got a pair of sibling kittens and my nephews wanted to name them. They opted for Sharon and Tracy as they lived in Essex, but unfortunately these were the names of one of their neighbour's daughters so it was thought tactless so they came up with Black and Decker as one wasn't all black. Unfortunately, Black soon went to the great roadkill in the sky so everyone is puzzled how Decker got her name! RtS |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Trevor Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:34 AM I read somewhere that because kitties respond best to high pitched noises ('cos that's the kind of noise their prey makes) the best names for them have an 's' sound in them (eg Puss). So how about 'Ssssod off', or 'Sssuffering whatever that other word is in the cartoon', or Ssylvesster. Despite this, best name I heard for a cat was 'Edie' - get it? |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: mooman Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:38 AM How about "Kitspaw"? mooman |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Oct 01 - 11:56 AM Kitspaw? Anyway.......I think they are all born with a piece of genetic information which allows all of them to understand one word....."Kitty." Like a dumbass, I figured an English cat ought to genetically respond to "Moggy" and since that isn't in common usage here, the cat would have a unique name AND respond to it. Dubious logic I admit, based on a piss por premise. So I name our Cornish Rex Moggy. Not only doesn't he respond well to Moggy (or kitty-kitty), he doesn't respond well to anything! He is in a complete daze most of the time, staring off into space, and spends the rest of his time trying to find the warmest place to sleep. He gets his full share BTW.....at least 18 hours a day. Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 01 - 12:29 PM Mortee, so glad you have her now!! Good for you! I had a little black female who used to get into everything as a kitten. I threatened to make her into Chop Suey and that instantly became her name. She turned into a very beautiful, matronly cat, but it still fit. Not only do they like the sibilance of esses, but also they seem to like "K's", so I singsong Kipling and it comes out Kip-a-ling-ling which he loves and Kelpie, which she loves. How about Mudpuddle? Kirke's Garde? Oh, one of my favourites was a calico I had whom I name Najuni, the j is soft, almost like an "sh." If I remember right it meant cat it Japanese or was just a name I liked.:-) I always thought Mariko from Shogun was a pretty name for a cat. I have a friend named that and she goes by the nickname "Mako" like the small sharks. How about MakoMudKat? LOL!! luvyakat |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: SINSULL Date: 15 Oct 01 - 01:20 PM I am partial to real names - I have a Lizzie, an Ed (actually Oedipus), an Alice, a Fred, and a Homey (don't ask but it does suit him). I wish I had known you were in the market for a kitten. Big Mick is now living with a little old lady who calls him Mickey Mantle. This little lady is very lucky to have found you. How about Cinders for Cinderella and her preference for coal? Eyes still blue? Frankie? (Old Blue Eyes and the song Frankie and Johnny?) Enjoy her, Morty. |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: PeteBoom Date: 15 Oct 01 - 01:37 PM I agree with Snuffy - sticking with Harry as a diminutive of Harriette would work. OF course, around my abode, most cats are called "dog food" - at least as far as Rosie is concerned... (not that she's ever EATEN one. Grab, shake and throw over the 6 foot fence, absolutely - Eat? Nah... Although it HAS helped cut down on the ferral cat population in the neighborhood.) |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: weepiper Date: 15 Oct 01 - 01:44 PM If you can't keep her out of the coal scuttle, how about 'Stoorie'? Scots for 'dusty,' but also used for something which is restless and rushes around stirring up dust, ie a child can be said to 'stoor about'. |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: John Hardly Date: 15 Oct 01 - 02:11 PM As of this August I am the proud father of a pair of torties. One name I almost couldn't resist (but did) was "Fender" because I could envision taking one of my "Fender extra heavy" tortoise shell picks, drilling it and having a ready-made name tag to hang about her neck. Her jewelry would be custom matched to her coat! by the way....she's turning out to BE an "extra heavy". |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: SINSULL Date: 15 Oct 01 - 02:18 PM Keep a close eye on her Mortie or you'll be calling her "Mom". My tiny kitten Alice surprised me and the vet. |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: John MacKenzie Date: 15 Oct 01 - 02:51 PM I'm sorry to be a wet blanket and a cat hater, but how about bird-killer, or vole strangler. It is an unfortunate fact that domestic cats kill thousands of song-birds every year, and I prefer the song of a thrush to the yowl of a cat. After this I don't think I've got time to get my coat before I duck and run for cover. Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 01 - 03:19 PM Giok, some of us agree and still love our cats and do not let them run out, except in enclosures. Mine have a "chicken coop" we built for them, outside our bedroom window. They love it and don't kill a thing!:-) |
Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,Hille Date: 15 Oct 01 - 03:35 PM How about Lilith? The first woman and wife of Adam. She was created out of dust n dirt too and was so uppity with Adam (Like: "Why should I have to submit and lie beneath you when we were both created equal?" that early Biblical scholars had to come up with a new wife for him. (Then Lilith went off and bonked a load of fallen angels and gave rise to the race of Demons - or something like that...... prompt visit to the Vets then :) |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: Deda Date: 15 Oct 01 - 03:55 PM My cat is named Squimmy. She has long fur, no tail (lost it to a car accident before I got her), weighs 13 lbs, and waddles around like a fat 4-legged duck. My husband sometimes calls her Squidgy. A friend just got a kitten and named it Onion, after hearing someone boast of his new cat named Artichoke. Another friend has a huge old Tom cat (20 lbs) named Percy. My childhood cat was named FurryPurry. A later one was named Freezer, because she would begin a deep purr that reminded us of the whirring sound the Freezer made when its motor would kick in. |

Subject: RE: Help: Name my new kitten? From: GUEST,MudWeasel Date: 15 Oct 01 - 05:21 PM Sorry Jack, but I have to disagree. Unless you have written consent from the cat in question, you should NEVER capo a cat. It'll just piss the cat off, and lead to serious blood loss on your part. (Not unlike capo-ing a guitar into C# pisses off the fiddle player.) If you truly need to raise the pitch of your cat, I suggest helium. It's difficutl to pronounce, but I suggest you name the kitten "Kskskskrshrk" which is the sound a tin of catfood makes when you open it up. This is a sure way to make the cat come when called. -MudWeasel PS Paul from Hull. Capo-ing would raise the tone. If you wanted to lower the tone, you'd have to call the cat DADGAD. |
