Over the weekend I went to see a concert by a "famous name" folksinger (naming no names :) ). To be fair they did a couple of workmanlike sets but I have the feeling that the whole act would have been ordinary if it wasn't for the backing musicians. These guys played up a storm on a whole range of instruments and were completely involved in their music. When one of them did a solo it got the biggest cheer of the night!

makes me think that there are a whole lot of really good "second fiddles" lurking in the background who should get a bit more limelight.... Any nominations?

Is Roma Baran still performing? She is/was a great guitarist, based in Montreal.

The world is simply filled with musicians of the first order who play behind people whose names we may have come to know. It may seem difficult to believe, but many, or perhaps even most of these excellent artists prefer to remain in the background. They delight in doing what they can to make the total sound as good as it can be. Some have an innate generosity that they express by making the "star" look good. They don't necessarily need to be famous. They only want to be very good at what they do and to sound good doing it.

B.B. King's back-up band is fantasic! I've paid $50.00 to see B.B., I pay atleast $25 to see just them.

Hmmm, I'm not sure that I agree with you entirely Allan. It may be true for some, but there are others who have, for one reason or another, convinced themselves that they are not singers. They are the ones who may one day find that they can sing and then, deservedly, become stars in their own right.

That's when three chord wonders like me will be shit out of luck.
