This song was first recorded in 1928 by Leo Soileau as Basile Waltz. Leo recorded it later in the 1930s as Le Gran Mamou. The great Harry Choates had a hit with it in 1950 and then it was recorded by many artists. Link Davis copyrighted it in 1950 as Big Mamou.

Grand Mamou

You went away and left me in Big Mamou
Yes, you left me for another, left me alone and oh, so blue
Please come back, hey, cheri, come on back
Make me happy and live with me in Big Mamou

...
Grand Mamou

You can have your dirty rice and crackers, too
You can have your file gumbo and your cold black coffee, too
Please come back, hey cheri, come on back
Make me happy and live with me in Big Mamou

...
Grand Mamou

(1)
On va toute aller a Grand Mamou,
Jolie monde, jolie fille, moi j'connait pas fais pa sa.
Eh ha ha, oh mignonne,
Ah bien moi j'men va la bas a Grand Mamou.

(2)
Why'd you go away and leave me in big Mamou,
You went away and left me alone and so blue.
Please come back, oh baby come on back,
Come on back and live with me in big Mamou.

(3)
Oh moi j'men va la bas a Grand Mamou,
Moi j'men va toute seule, en jonglant ca q'ta fait.
Si tu voudrait r'venir, avec moi a Grand Mamou,
J'serait content de t'avoir pour me femme.

(4)
Yeah I'm going to, to the big Mamou,
I'm going all alone, thinking of what you've done.
If you want to come back, with me to big Mamou,
I'd be happy, to have you for my wife.

(5)
Oh 'tite cherie, villaine maniere,
Tu va pleurer un jour, pour toute ca q'ta fait.
Et moi j'men va, dans les chemins toute seule,
Et moi j'men va la bas a Grand Mamou.

My guess is that "Jais ke-tais yeir oh soir" is a phonetic spelling for "J'ai quitté hier au soir" (I left last night)

Likewise "Pous allais ah Grand Mamou" = "Pour aller à Grand Mamou" (To go to Grand Mamou)

GOING BACK TO BIG MAMOU - Wayne Toups ZydeCajun Version

Well I'm going back,
Going back to Big Mamou
I'm going back
Going back to Big Mamou
Yeah I'm on my way
On my way to Big Mamou

I don't need no woman
Tell me what to do
I don't need no woman
Tell me what to do
So I'm going back
Going back to Big Mamou

Said Big Mamou, said Big Mamou
Yeah Big Mamou, yeah Big Mamou
Yeah I'm going back
Going back to Big Mamou

INSTRUMENTAL

Yeah I'm going back
Going back to Big Mamou
Yeah I'm going back
Going back to Big Mamou
Yeah I'm on my way
On my way to Big Mamou

Jais ke-tais yeir oh soir
Pous allais ah Grand Mamou
Jais ke-tais yeir oh soir
Pous allais ah Grand Mamou
Yeah I'm on my way
On my way to Big Mamou

Said Big Mamou, said Big Mamou
Yeah Big Mamou, yeah Big Mamou
I'm gonna lose my blues
Gonna find me zydeco shoes

INSTRUMENTAL TO END

The duo by Hank Williams Jr. and Jimmy C. Newman is somewhat like what i have given below. Williams repeats the following line in English. At two points in the song, Newman gives the following verses in French.

Why'd you go and leave me in big Mamou, you left me for another alone and so blue. Oh come back, please come back, come back and live with me in big Mamou (or something like that).

Oh s'en allez a Grand Mamou. Jolie monde, mais jolie fille, moi, j'connais j'merite pas ca. Oh, hah, hah, oh mignonne, oh mais moi j'm'en va moi tout seule a Grand Mamou.

Translation: Oh, going to big mamou. Pretty world/everything, pretty girl, I know I didn't deserve that. Oh ha ha, oh pretty (one), I'm heading alone to big mamou.

There's another "Grand Mamou."

GRAND MAMOU

(Translation)
Oh, dear baby, I left, I left to go to Big Mamou,
Oh, mon nèg, oh my dear little one,
I know I don't deserve what you doing.

Oh, dear baby, that hurts me,
It hurts me what you're doing with me,
Oh. 'tit monde, oh, dear little girl,
I know I don't deserve what you're doing to me.

Oh, little darling, with your ugly ways,
I know you'll cry some day for what you've done.
Oh, I'm wandering the roads, so lonely!
0h, I'm going back to big Mamou.

Does anyone have the lyrics to "Big Mamou"? I believe it is considered Cajun Bluegrass.

Several people have recorded this song such as-----Jimmie C. Newman and Frenchie Burke and Hank Williams Jr.can't I'm particularly interested in the French lyrics that Frenchie uses on the second verse.

Thanks, Cookie
