Sorry, don't know the title and lyrics...

But just an hour ago I was searching the 'net for pictures of a hen (with head down picking up corn) and a rooster (crowing) for a little boy learning to draw. He's been "commissioned" by his aunt for a drawing.

When I find some pictures, I'll put this caption on them:

The rooster does the crowing,
But the hen delivers the eggs.

Said the little red rooster to the little red hen,
"You haven't laid an egg in God knows when."

Said the little red hen to the little red rooster,
"You don't come around as often as you uster."

Subject: Lyr Add: ROOSTER BLUES (Lightnin' Slim)
From: Zorro
Date: 17 Oct 01 - 03:34 AM

Here's the version I heard and do:

ROOSTER BLUES
Written by J West
As recorded by Lightnin' Slim, 1959.

1. Oh, well, the little red rooster told the little red hen:
"I ain't been to see ya in God knows when."
The little red hen told the little red rooster:
"You don't come around, daddy, like you used ta."

CHORUS: We got to rock tonight, baby.
We got to rock tonight, baby.
We got to rock tonight, baby.
Yes, we got to rock tonight.

2. Oh, well, the old black cat told the little gray mouse:
"I've got a mind to chase you round this house."
The little gray mouse told the old black cat:
Says: "Look-a-here, daddy, don't chase me like that."

3. Well, the little green frog told the big black snake:
He says: "Come on, daddy, let's swim in the lake."
The big black snake told the little green frog:
Says: "I'm gonna lay here on this log."

4. Oh, well, the big alligator told the old crocodile,
He said: "Hang around, mama; I'm gonna kiss you after while."
Crocodile says to the big alligator:
"You better kiss me now, daddy; let me hang around later.”

Make up your own verses.

LITTLE RED HEN BLUES
(Taj Mahal)

On this list people tend to call that song "Long Gone.” It's called "Little Red Rooster,” that it is traditional, and that it was recorded by Taj Mahal backed by the Pointer Sisters long ago. I believe Taj Mahal calls his version "Little Red Hen Blues" and himself the writer. I'm sure it has gone through numerous transformative stages, lyrics-wise, as blues songs tend to do.

Little Red Hen Blues

Well the little red hen said to the little red rooster
Why don't you come 'round here like you used to
Long gone, long gone
Like a wild old turkey through the corn

Been up north, I been down south
To the east, the west, back again
Long gone, long gone
Like a wild old turkey through the corn

You can take my potatoes they're nice and brown
Stick 'em in the oven, turn the damper down
Long gone, long gone
Like a wild old turkey through the corn

Men don't like me 'cause I speak my mind
Women crazy 'bout me cause I take my time
Long gone, long gone
Like a wild old turkey through the corn

Well the little red hen said to the little red rooster
Why don't you come 'round here like you used to,
Long gone, long gone
Like a wild old turkey through the corn

This is how I remember it...

Said the little red hen to the big red rooster
"You don't come around now
as often as you used ter"
Said the big red rooster to the little red hen
"Meet me in the barn yard
at a quarter past ten" and she couldn't see a cotton picken thing
And then that rooster began to sing
To the big red rooster said the little red hen
You ain't been that good, since God know's when
Hey!... I ain't no Gawl Dang Rooster!
And that's when the hen knew
That the gander had goosed her!

Well ... it's something like that way ... maybe someone can clarify.

Ah, Taj and the Pointer Sisters. What a wonderful combo that was. This version is on the Taj Box Set.

The one that the Stones covered was at least as old as Chicago Blues. I believe it was first done by Muddy Waters.

Blues Lyrics On Line says that your song is called "Rooster Blues," that it was written by "J. West," (I don't recognize the name), and that it was recorded by Lightnin' Slim in the 1950's or '60's, but it was not released until it appeared on the CD "Nothin' but the Devil" (ACE CDCHD 616).

If you type "Who Broke the Lock" you will find a number of threads with different versions of the Riley Puckett song "Who Broke the Lock (On the Henhouse Door)" with very similar lyrics. The links above are old enough that they don't work, so I couldn't listen to the tune referred to here.

I don't think they are the same song, (Jim Dixon would likely to have linked the the Riley Puckett song if they were,) but appear to have had some common origins, or else many of these verses are "zipper verses."

The Kitchen Syncopators (led by Gill Landry, also known as Frank Lemon, occasional member of the Old Crow Medicine Show) do a version similar to this, complete with the "said the zebra to the camel" verse. But instead of "never satisfied", they sing "mostly satisfied".

Here it is on Youtube:

LITTLE RED HEN BLUES*
As sung by Taj Mahal with the Pointer Sisters

Well, little red hen said to little red rooster:
You don't come 'round here much as you used ter.
Now, honey, you long gone.
Baby, you long gone.
Oh, you long gone, like a turkey through the corn.

Old gray mule say t'that ol' gray hen:
Honey, now tell me: where that rooster of yours have been.
She say he long gone,
Say, he long gone.
Oh, he's long gone, baby, like a turkey through the corn.

Oh, that sweet gray goat say to that old fat mule:
You know people round here been talkin', tellin' me that you're a fool,
But they long gone.
Yes, they long gone.
Oh, they long gone, honey, like a turkey through the corn.

I been up north, been down south,
Been to the east; I like the west and south the best,
And I'll be long gone.
Yes, I'm long gone.
I am long gone, honey, like a turkey through the corn.

Tell me, baby, what's on your mind.
I can see by your eyes that you ain't been cryin',
And I been long gone.
I been long gone.
I been long gone, honey, like a turkey through the corn.

Now, you know the men don't like me 'cause I speak my mind,
And the women crazy 'bout me 'cause I take my time,
And I be long gone.
Honey, I'm long gone.
I am long gone, baby, just like a turkey through the corn.

Now, the little red hen say to the little red rooster:
Now, baby, now, you don't come 'round here much as you used ter.
You been long gone.
Now you long gone.
Say, baby, you long gone, honey, like a turkey through the corn.

Well, you can take my potatoes up out that groun',
Put 'em in my oven, turn your damper down.
Mama, now, you know I'm long gone.
Honey, I'm long gone.
I am long gone, baby, like a turkey through the corn.

* On some albums, the title is given as LITTLE RED HEN.

Said the little red hen, to the big red rooster
you don't come around, as often as you uster
said the big red rooster, to the little red hen
I'll meet you in the barnyard, about a half past ten

Well the night was dark, and she couldn't see a thing
but she soon felt something that made her sing
Oh mister Rooster! , said the little red hen
I haven't felt this way, since a god knows when...

but a big gruff voice said this ain't no Rooster.
And the little red hen knew the gander had goosed her.

My dad used to sing this all the time back when I was growing up. Might not be the same one you all are looking for but thought I'd add it to your page any who.

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Oct 13 - 08:31 AM

LITTLE RED ROOSTER
As sung by Margie Day and the Griffin Brothers Orchestra, 1951.

Got a little red rooster and, man, how he can crow! (2x)
He's the boss of the barnyard any old place he goes.

He's a tiny little fella but he sure can strut his stuff, (2x)
And the way he loves me, man, he ain't no bluff.

If you want your red rooster and you want him all alone,
Just keep him off the road where these old hens like to roam,
'Cause your little red rooster may seem...(?),
But as soon as your back's turned, he'll make a fool of you.

If you got a good rooster, better clip his wings.
These old hens will get him and give him diamond rings.
Little red rooster, ain't gonna let him go.
I done clipped his wings; man, he can't fly no mo'.
