Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rooster To The Little Red Hen From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 15 Oct 01 - 09:14 PM Sorry, don't know the title and lyrics... But just an hour ago I was searching the 'net for pictures of a hen (with head down picking up corn) and a rooster (crowing) for a little boy learning to draw. He's been "commissioned" by his aunt for a drawing. When I find some pictures, I'll put this caption on them:

Oh, well, the little red rooster told the little red hen: "I ain't been to see ya in God knows when." The little red hen told the little red rooster: "You don't come around, daddy, like you used ta." CHORUS: We got to rock tonight, baby. We got to rock tonight, baby. We got to rock tonight, baby. Yes, we got to rock tonight. 2. Oh, well, the old black cat told the little gray mouse: "I've got a mind to chase you round this house." The little gray mouse told the old black cat: Says: "Look-a-here, daddy, don't chase me like that." 3. Well, the little green frog told the big black snake: He says: "Come on, daddy, let's swim in the lake." The big black snake told the little green frog: Says: "I'm gonna lay here on this log." 4. Oh, well, the big alligator told the old crocodile, He said: "Hang around, mama; I'm gonna kiss you after while." Crocodile says to the big alligator: "You better kiss me now, daddy; let me hang around later.” Make up your own verses. |

LITTLE RED HEN BLUES On this list people tend to call that song "Long Gone.” It's called "Little Red Rooster,” that it is traditional, and that it was recorded by Taj Mahal backed by the Pointer Sisters long ago. I believe Taj Mahal calls his version "Little Red Hen Blues" and himself the writer. I'm sure it has gone through numerous transformative stages, lyrics-wise, as blues songs tend to do. Little Red Hen Blues
Well the little red hen said to the little red rooster
Been up north, I been down south
You can take my potatoes they're nice and brown
Men don't like me 'cause I speak my mind
Well the little red hen said to the little red rooster |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rooster To The Little Red Hen From: Steve Latimer Date: 18 Oct 01 - 10:10 PM Ah, Taj and the Pointer Sisters. What a wonderful combo that was. This version is on the Taj Box Set. The one that the Stones covered was at least as old as Chicago Blues. I believe it was first done by Muddy Waters. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rooster To The Little Red Hen From: Jim Dixon Date: 28 Nov 01 - 12:14 PM Blues Lyrics On Line says that your song is called "Rooster Blues," that it was written by "J. West," (I don't recognize the name), and that it was recorded by Lightnin' Slim in the 1950's or '60's, but it was not released until it appeared on the CD "Nothin' but the Devil" (ACE CDCHD 616). |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rooster To The Little Red Hen From: Janie Date: 23 May 09 - 09:30 AM If you type "Who Broke the Lock" you will find a number of threads with different versions of the Riley Puckett song "Who Broke the Lock (On the Henhouse Door)" with very similar lyrics. The links above are old enough that they don't work, so I couldn't listen to the tune referred to here. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Red Rooster To The Little Red Hen From: Janie Date: 23 May 09 - 09:34 AM I don't think they are the same song, (Jim Dixon would likely to have linked the the Riley Puckett song if they were,) but appear to have had some common origins, or else many of these verses are "zipper verses." |

Subject: Lyr Add: LITTLE RED ROOSTER (from Margie Day) From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Oct 13 - 08:31 AM LITTLE RED ROOSTER As sung by Margie Day and the Griffin Brothers Orchestra, 1951. Got a little red rooster and, man, how he can crow! (2x) He's the boss of the barnyard any old place he goes. He's a tiny little fella but he sure can strut his stuff, (2x) And the way he loves me, man, he ain't no bluff. If you want your red rooster and you want him all alone, Just keep him off the road where these old hens like to roam, 'Cause your little red rooster may seem...(?), But as soon as your back's turned, he'll make a fool of you. If you got a good rooster, better clip his wings. These old hens will get him and give him diamond rings. Little red rooster, ain't gonna let him go. I done clipped his wings; man, he can't fly no mo'. |
