Subject: Lyr/Chords Req: Jellied Eels & Henry's Fish and Ch
From: Bugsy

Does anyone have the words to the above mentioned Songs?

I think they were both old Music Hall numbers that were resurrected in the 60's by Joe Brown and the Bruvvers.

I can remember the first verse and Chorus of Jellied Eels -

Now ever since I was a mite
I've had a whacking appetite
Yes I had an appetite that woudl raise the rafters
Swallowed my befores as well as my afters
'Til one Sunday afternoon
They bunged something in my spoon
Well I think it's ever since then
I've had an irresistable Yen - for

Jellied Eels Jellied Eels
Wobbling about like wonky wheels
Why d'you smile and look so sickly
Slide 'em down your throat and quickly
Don't bring up any empty cup
'Cos I know just how you feels
When you get to taste 'em Won't want to waste 'em
Lovely Jellied Eels.

Now Cockles and Whelks are fine
I've flogged 'em since the age of nine
...................................

That's all I can remember, Can anyone help with the rest please?

As far as Henry's fish and chips, I can only remember bits of the Chorus -

Oh - Haddock or Cod or Plaice or Skate
Filleted Dover Sole.
............................
Mackeral by the shole
I tell you everythings fresh and newly fried
Hot to the finger tips
You've never eaten til you've tried
Our 'Enry's fish and chips.

Waiting with fingers crossed

Cheers

I don't think there * were * any more words for Jellied Eels - I've always thought of it as a one-verse.

And Joe Brown is still great. And he still plays Hava Nagila so fast it makes your ears give up. Diamond geezer, mate!!!

Well, me ol' china, would yer Adam n'Eve it ! I thought at first the fish and chips song was in "Half a Sixpence" as well - but I've checked, and it wasn't. No luck yet in finding the lyrics on a website, except a "Showstoppers" playlist, giving the first line as "My Uncle Henry's got a shop down the high street". Tommy Steele definitely sang it, though. I suppose if it was in "Showstoppers", so did Gary Wilmott (last seen acting Shakespeare !) No luck yet with Cockney websites. But I'm not giving up yet. Nah - I'll get me Ramsgates on them Lilians, even if it means puttin on me weasel, orf dahn the frog, an avin a butchers at some o them rookeries, or callin up geezers on the dog n bone. Alright ?

I've just been prodded sharply by Dai (thank goodness there is only one!) and told to get onto this.

Well, I did have the words to "'Enery's fish & chips" from way back, when Stonnall Players used it in a show; but whether I could find it I don't know ... We're away next week, so there'll be a bit of a wait; and we're moving house soon, so all sorts of things are surfacing and disappearing again--it might bubble its way to the top. "Jellied eels" I don't know, except from a v-e-r-y distant memory. (I ate a bit once: it had a bone in it like one of those nasty spiky caltrop things they used to use to tscatter around to stick in horses' hooves and make 'em lame. Not recommended for swallowing!)

From: The Walrus at work

From a (very) faulty memory.

Henry's Fish and Chips

My Uncle Henry's got a Fish shop down the High Street,
With marble on the Counter and a big glass door,
My Uncle Henry's rather famous down the High Street,
So let me tell you what he's rather famous for,

One day Uncle saw his customers was gettin' thin,
They'd pass his Fish and Chip shop, but they'd not come in,
So Uncle stepped outside,
Threw back his head and cried,
In a voice as loud as Sin.

Oh, Haddock or Cod or Plaice or Skate
Filleted Dover Sole.
Kippers or Scampi, ***** or Hake,
Mackeral by the shoal,
I'll tell you,
Everything's fresh and newly fried
Hot to the finger tips.
You've never eaten til you've tried
Old Henry's fish and chips.

Unfortunately, that's where the memory fails. (You'd think with a name like mine, I'd remember songs about fish, wouldn't you !)

Regards

Walrus

Tommy Steele is cited above as singing the Fish & Chip Song. He also recorded Jellied Eels which is the only place I ever heard it I think. I'm no use to this discussion as I only remembered part of the chorus. And I don't remember tihe tune to the verse. So if someone could come up with ABCs, perhaps, of these two fine songs I for one would appreciate it enormously. (I suppose Midis would do but I've never managed to translate a mudcat midi file onto my Mac).

Jellied Eels

Now ever since I was a mite,
I've had a whackin' appetite,
My ordering for dinner would raise the rafters,
I swallowed my befores as well me afters,

'Til one Sunday afternoon,
They bunged something in me spoon,
and I'm sure it must'a been ever since then

Jellied Eels~ Jellied Eels~
Wobbling about like wonky wheels,
Why'd you frown and look so sickly
Slide 'em down your throat and quickly
Don't bean up in an empty cup
now I know just how you feel
When you get a taste, you won't want to waste them
Lovely Jellied Eels.

Now wimples and shrimps are fine
I've flogged 'em since the age of nine
I used to jog along with me two wheeled barra
but there was something wrong, something the matta
There was no jellied eels on show
No wonder they didn't wanna know
I went out and bought a load
Piled 'm up in pile
and people could smell me coming a mile. Ohh..

Jellied Eels~ Jellied Eels~
Wobbling about like wonky wheels,
Why'd you frown and look so sickly
Slide 'em down your throat and quickly
Don't bean up in ya empty cup
now I know just how you feel
When you get a taste, you won't want to waste them
Lovely Jellied Eels.

Jellied Eels~ Jellied Eels~

Why'd you frown and look so sickly
Slide 'em down your throat and quickly
Don't bean up in ya empty cup
now I know just how you feel
When you get a taste, you won't want to waste them
Lovely Jellied Eels.

(The chorus repeats twice more while the lead singer complains about chavs with chocolate covered fingers touching things in his store..)

FISH AND CHIPS
(John Taylor / David Heneker)
As sung by Joe Brown in "Charlie Girl"

1. My Uncle 'Enry's got a shop down the 'igh street
With marble on the counter and a big glass door.
My Uncle 'Enry's very famous down the 'igh street,
So let me tell you what 'e's very famous for:
'E found one day 'is customers was getting thin.
They'd pass 'is fish and chip shop but they'd not go in,
So Uncle stepped outside,
Threw back 'is 'ead and cried
In a voice as loud as sin:

CHORUS: Oh! 'Addock or cod or sprats or 'ake,
Filleted Dover sole,
Kippers or scampi, plaice or skate,
Mackerel by the shoal—.
I tell yer ev'rythin's fresh and newly fried,
'Ot to the finger tips.
You've never eaten till you've tried
Ol' 'Enry's fish and chips! Oi!

2. Well, Uncle 'Enry soon attracted a crowd there,
All sorts of funny people like you never saw!
But when they 'eard me uncle shoutin' out aloud there,
They come to see what all the blinkin' noise was for.
From Acton town to 'Ackney Wick an' all around,
They flocked to Uncle's like it was a football ground.
A fish 'e didn't sell,
But still they paid 'im well,
Just to 'ear 'is great new sound.

CHORUS: Oh! 'Addock or cod or sprats or 'ake,
Filleted Dover sole,
Kippers or scampi, plaice or skate,
Mackerel by the shoal—
I tell yer ev'rythin's fresh and newly fried,
'Ot to the finger tips,
You've never eaten till you've tried
Ol' 'Enry's fish and chips! Oi!

3. Soon Uncle 'Enry was a signin' a contract
For 'alf a dozen records an' TV an' all;
Not only that, but someone else 'ad bin in contact
An' offered him a concert at the Albert 'All
But Uncle wasn't bothered by 'is rise to fame.
'E kept 'is fish and chip shop going just the same,
Though now 'e made 'is cash,
At 'alf a crown a bash,
Singin' out 'is old refrain:

CHORUS: Oh! 'Addock or cod or sprats or 'ake,
Filleted Dover sole,
Kippers or scampi, plaice or skate,
Mackerel by the shoal—
I tell yer ev'rythin's fresh and newly fried,
'Ot to the finger tips,
You've never eaten till you've tried
Ol' 'Enry's fish and chips! Oi!

4. Now Uncle 'Enry's clientele, they inform us,
Includes eleven ministers an' one MP.
Dukes and their duchesses in numbers quite enormous,
An' chinless debs 'oo'd send you up the family tree!
When questioned by reporters on 'is great success,
'E never makes a speech; 'e merely says, "I guess
It's just because me voice
Is everybody's choice
Would you like to 'ear it?"—Yes!

(Joe: spoken – "I thought you might")

CHORUS: 'Addock or cod or sprats or 'ake,
Filleted Dover sole,
Kippers or scampi, plaice or skate,
Mackerel by the shoal—
I tell yer ev'rythin's fresh and newly fried,
Hot to the finger tips,
You've never eaten till you've tried
Ol' 'Enry's fish and chips! Oi!

(fast)
CHORUS: 'Addock or cod or sprats or 'ake,
Filleted Dover sole,
Kippers or scampi, plaice or skate,
Mackerel by the shoal—
I tell yer ev'rythin's fresh and newly fried,
Hot to the finger tips,
You've never eaten till you've tried
Ol' 'Enry's fish and chips! Oh!

Ev'rything's fresh and newly fried,
Hot to the finger tips.
You've never eaten, never, ever eaten,
Till you've tried those can't-be-beaten
Uncle 'Enry's fish and chips.

From: GUEST
Date: 09 Jun 07 - 08:50 PM

Just to correct a couple of translation errors in the above post, the full lyrics for Joe Brown's single JELLIED EELS are as follows:

JELLIED EELS
As recorded by Joe Brown on "The Joe Brown Story: The Piccadilly/Pye Anthology" (1967)

Now ever since I was a mite,
I've 'ad a whacking appetite,
My hollerin' for dinner would raise the rafters,
I'd swallow me befores as well as me afters.
Till one sunny afternoon,
They bunged something in me spoon,
And I'm sure it must 'ave been ever since then
That I've 'ad an irresistible yen
For--

CHORUS: Jellied eels, jellied eels
Woggling about like wonky wheels,
Why d'ya frown and look so sickly?
Slide 'em down your throat and quickly.
Don't bring up any empty cup
Though I knows just how you feels.
When you gets the taste
You won't wanna waste
Them lovely jellied eels.

Now, winkles and shrimps are fine.
I've flogged 'em since the age of nine,
I used to jog along with me two-wheeled barra,
But there was something wrong, there was something the matter.
I'd no jellied eels on show,
No wonder they didn't want to know!
I went out, bought a load, piled 'em up in a pile,
And people could smell me coming a mile...
Off! CHORUS

All together now!
   (Chorus repeated)
(Spoken) It's alright for you missus,
I 'ave to come down 'ere on a Saturday morning
and what do I get? Kids; nippers, chavvies,
all round me stall. Rotten, filthy, dirty, stinking,
jammy, chocolaty fingers all over me jellied eels.
Not to mention me whelks, me cockles and me mussels and me lovely jellied eels!

Thanks you lot. What a memory you've all got ; you're a marvel. I've been looking for these lyics for years but could never find them. Takes me right back to when I used to listen to skiffle; the likes of Joe Brown, Lonny Donnegan, and Tommy Steele. Joe and Tommy moved on into rock & roll. Joe became 'Joe Brown and his bruvvers'.

It also brings back memories of "Tubby Isaacs" a London jew who sold Whelks, Winkles, and Jellied Eels out of his van-come-kiosk in the East End of London in the '60s & '70s. He sold these by the by the pint. His measuring jug was a pewter beer pint-pot. He would scoop them into that and then tip them out into a paper cup which he handed you with a plastic fork. From memory they were about 50p a pint. On his counter was the usual vinegar, salt and pepper. Boy did you need the pepper - anything to stop you hurling. Well I nearly bought-up the jellied eels which were disgusting, but his Whelks really took the biscuit. A mate made me try one of his. I got the tough heel of my first Whelk (a very large revolting marine mollusc) between my teeth and pulled like hell. It was like leather. So thinking the whole creature would be as chewy I turned it over and took a good hard bite of the top of the Whelk. Well, it burst open in my mouth with all the consistency of a fishy tasting raw egg. I haven't eaten another Whelk since! (I think all snails should be left to the French, who will eat anything including fungus dug up by pigs and horse-meat). The really strange thing is that I do love me Oysters. And much to me Trouble's surprise, I will only eat them "au Natural" wiv a little bit o' lemon juice and pepper.

So thanks for the Lyrics and thanks Tubby (if your still alive) for the real experience in the East End.

Now all we need is the Tunes to these great songs!!
