Subject: Announcing: Maart Allcock & Gilly Darbey
From: GUEST,Pete W.
Date: 17 Oct 01 - 04:51 AM

There's another chance to enjoy the superb music of Maartin Allcock and Gilly Darbey on Friday November 16, when they appear in a special concert in Brinklow, near Rugby.

The duo played a brilliant debut set at the Ride-A-Cock-Horse Folk Club, Banbury in May. They went down a storm at Coventry's Godiva Festival in June. And they delighted the crowds at the Warwick Folk Festival in July.

Their powerful combination of superb voice and stunning acoustic guitar brings out the best of their repertoire – from traditional ballads to Tori Amos with some great blues thrown in.

Formerly with Waterfall and Nothing By Chance, Gilly has established herself also as a fine solo artist both in the UK and Australia. Ex-Fairport and Jethro Tull musician Maart has toured extensively with Kieran Halpin and Steve Tilston.

The show starts at 8pm in the Royal British Legion, Heath Lane, Brinklow and support is provided by two members of The Oddsods, Pete Willow (guitar) and Louisa Davies (fiddle). Tickets are £5 – call 01788 832608 for details.

Kevin Dempsey and Joe Broughton are also in concert at the Legion on Dec. 21st. More details later.

Point of information. When and why did Martin Allcock metamorphose into Maartin Allcock?

Murray

Having 2 a's in your name is very trendy, don't you know? Like Jaason Simmons of Baywatch fame!

I suspect it was when he joined Equity.

Is this Gilly Darbey by any chance the Gill Darby who used to run the Orange Tree FC in North London, and used to make a living writing songs for Play School and other kids TV programmes in the UK?

What's in a name? That which we call Tim Rose by any other name would sound as sweet....

No - Gilly made her living touring with Keith Donnelly, firstly as part of Waterfall (with Martin Oram on fiddle), then as Little Aeroplane, then as Nothing By Chance. Before she met Keith she had been busking in Europe (apart from a brief unsuccessful spell as a double-glazing sales person). Keith wrote (and still writes) many of the routines for Phil Cool and Jasper Carrott and during the 80s and 90s he and Gilly did extensive tours with them, appearing in virtually every major venue in the UK. They also had their own TV show on BBC2 and in the 90s they made it onto the Radio 2 playlist with their single Will Not Shelter - interviewed by the likes of Gloria Hunniford.

Gilly's singing voice was heard on the sound track of the BBC TV drama The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall. She has a superb jazzy, bluesy voice that brings out the best in trad and modern songs.

As for the extra A in Maart's name - not sure why it first appeared (could be a reflection of his pronounciation) but it was round about the time of his first solo album release after he'd joined Fairport. I think he was plain ol' Martin when he was in the Bully Wee Band.
