It was either last weekend at Llanstock, or in some previous thread that Snuffy claimed that it is possible to sing any song to the tune of "Ilkley Moor". This has seriously endangered my sanity over the last few days, and I now find it almost impossible to sing any other tune. Please let me know, Snuffy, if there is any cure for this. If not I am ready for admission to The Massachusetts Home for the Bewildered.

This is even worse than I thought: it works, after a fashion, but why do all the other people stare at me in choir?

The same is true of the Gilligan's Island theme ...

Have you tried "Ten green bottles"?

If all else fails then drinking 10x GB may also help.

I think it was mentioned that this was one of the tunes for "While shepherds watched". When I can't get to sleep, I try remembering all the tunes for this I have heard sung in the year. I'm only a novice, I can only get into the low teens numbers...

This is sort of strange.

On my and my kids' recent trip, we were in Ilkley, in response to a dinner invitation from Chris Newman and Maire ni Chathasaigh. Pretty big thrill for a dumb yank, to have the best (imo) American-style flatpicker in the British Isles fix your dinner while the Irish Traditional Musician of the Year award winner serves the wine!

We were to have gone back the next morning to climb Ilkley Moor with Maire (Chris had to go off on a teaching gig), but that morning the weather was terrible, i. e. fairly normal by British standards but no good for hiking, so we cancelled.

I remember the song from the old IOCA Song Fest, but I didn't make the connection beforehand. What a close call!

Peter.

I ought to have prefaced this thread with a Serious Health Warning; this is a most insidious tune, an earworm. Perhaps I could exorcise it with my own variant of the Lyke-Wake Pilgrimage, and march over Ilkey Moor singing THAT tune.

they're coming to take me away ha ha

I think "Three Blind Mice" is an exception. "America the Beautiful", on the other hand....

I'm from`Ilkley but only have one ear... due to a tragic accident on the moor involving a hat, a small child, and a chainsaw. Ever since the accident I can't seem to stop humming the tune to this song, even whilst sleeping or talking to others...

Should I seek help?

I'm doing a blog on the infernal song to be found on http://rombaldsrover.blogspot.com in the very near future.

There is a folk process in action here. 20 years ago they used to have "Old Macdonald Had a ..." singing contests. Imagine a night of the song, even once in Latin. Now it is Ilkley Moor. Tomorrow?

It's a notorious place for UFO sightings, so it's possible that aliens are attracted by the particualr notes that make up the tune.

Also, Jimi Hendrix once played at the Troutbeck Hotel - you can hear strains of the tune in several of his songs.
