Another group that holds up well are the Skillit Lickers with Tanner and Puckett. Tanner and Puckett's John Henry, from 1924, is still one of the best.
The Carter Family concordance posted by Masato is really helpful, an easy way of checking titles of which I usually remember only part.

Laura Boosinger (Ashville, N.C.) does a beautiful version on her "Down The Road" c.d. If you haven't heard her, you should. http://boosinger.solidthought.net ought to get you to her site. Audio samples etc. available there.

Amazing, how in this hi tech world of crashing, thundering war-zone like noise passing for music, the music of The Carter Family is more popular than ever. When I was a teen, my nose was in the air as I listened to Beatles, etc. & snubbing "country" or anything resembling it. Now I appreciate the predecessors of Country & Bluegrass in a way I never could as a kid. While I was raised being taught "Classical" & Jazz, I most often perform "traditional" music. Bluegrass is amazingly like Jazz with its tendencies for improvisation & much like Classical with the virtuoso level performers on "traditional" instruments. "If it sounds good, it is good."

If you want to hear a superb version of this song, try Norman Blake's! I think it is on the album he made with Tony Rice- "Blake and Rice". He is masterful.

There's Index to In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain, a 12 volume CD compilation of all of the Original Carter Family's commercial recordings released by Bear Family in 2000.

Harpgirl, it was "World Gone Wrong," and here's a link to where you can actually hear some of it!

http://bobdylan.com/albums/world.html

Slightly different melody than the one I remember, but it's an interesting version -- and I think I like that lyric the best. What is it about that song that is so entrancing to me (and apparantly to others) I wonder? Part of it is the melody, I think, but unlike some songs that old, the lyrics never cloy, despite the old phrases. I dunno. Very touching.

Dale...I want to be there now!!!! I might be there in March. My son wants to return for spring break. I wish Florida's spring break corresponded with spring in Arkansas. I wouldn't have missed so many MV Folk Festivals. Jeanne Carrignon is one of my favorite fiddlers (now deceased I think, right)

Judy, Yes, when the words were posted they came from the Dylan record. Which one was it? I want to listen. I always sing the first line "He was just a blue-eyed boston boy" and I imagine a red haired boston boy...no one I know actually, just an archetype...

HarpGirl -- Yes, I had found that the other day on the web on a Hazel and Alice site -- geez, I've moved around so much, I used to have that album! You and me, I get my decades mixed up! Then I saw that Mike Seeger recorded it in 1964 on his "Hello, Stranger," album (even though his "new" wife told me the other night he had never recorded it!) And surprise, Dylan recorded it in 1993 on (don't remember the name of the album). But I would not have been able to find all this if you hadn't given me the name. There's another name sometimes used for it, called "The Last Fierce Charge," I saw. Seeger, by the way, got it from (of course) a family in Kentucky. Gee, more than you ever wanted to know about the song, huh?

Dale -- I think I was wrong. This couldn't be a Carter Family song. I must have misheard him, because like you, I looked and found it nowhere on the site.

How about last night? One of the October Gospel shows ~~ including something from the Carter Family, naturally! Other stuff? Here lately I have been listening to lots of musicians from other countries, oh, like French Canadians Angèle Arsenault, Marie-Michèle Desrosiers, and Dan et Lou, Scandinavians Carola Häggkvist and Sissel Kyrkjebø, New Zealander Hollie Smith, Greece's Nana Mouskouri, and of course, the usual ~~ fiddles, guitars, dulcimers, autoharps, and banjos from the Folk Music Capital of the World! (Not that I am trying to make you envious or anything)

I didn't find that song on either of the Carter sites, by the way. Maybe it is under another title, or I just didn't look hard enough.

How about Carter Family Lyric Site? I know this site has been mentioned before, but you can never talk too much about the Carter Family. If that one is not working, here is another.

ooops! I think I remembered the Hazel Dickens version. Did she do it with Alice Gerrard? I don't think there was a version by Kathy and Carol. My mistake. My memory from the 60's is rather poor....

Wow harp girl, THANKS! That is one song I used to play and sing -- back when I played and sang -- and I had totally forgotten it. You mean Kathy and Carol DID do it? Boy, shows you how meaningful those memories are, because apparantly the song has carried through the years in my head --I could still hear those ethereal harmonies of theirs! I see there's only one Kathy and Carol record available, and it's not on there.

I heard Mike Seeger perform a Carter Family song on the autoharp the other night which he has not recorded, but I didn't get the title. I heard this song maybe 25-30 years ago on the autoharp and I'm thinking it was girl harmonies, maybe from a duo like Kathy and Carol. Maybe. It starts out "He was just a blue-eyed soldier boy.." and relays the request of a young man to a friend in battle that whoever dies first, should tell the other's mother. It goes something like: "But if I should die and you return, will you do the same for me? My mother I know is sitting at home, she'll wait for me patiently." (Or something like that). And it has the phrase, "I'll Do your bidding if you please," that goes before that. Wish I'd stayed and asked more about the song, because I have always loved it, and it seems like a rarer one among the Carter Family songs (maybe just a Maybelle song?)
