Huzzah! I have been really slacking on the "add a tune" bit for the last 5 or so years - maybe this will get me off my b*tt and back on course...

Didin't know this thread was here until Roger Knowles told me the other day. Jeff is right about the reasons for John.

I think Roy Hardacre in Harrogate has a few copies of the cd left, you can contact him through the Empress Folk club in Harrogate.

Yes, it is most definitely written by Peter Benson. And, it may be "Josh", but our gallant Captain says "John". It may be that Peter does not. I can ask him for ya if you like?

And Mmario? That's "Pyrates RoyalE"...with an e at the end, luv! :D

No problem, Mmario! I've been meaning to learn this one for a while now. It's about time I got off my ass and did it. Now that the MDRF is over, I can get back to some other priorities. BTW, I saw you on the wall Saturday, but I was busy with the family and couldn't get over to say hi.

*twitch* I'll be grateful for anything "we" can get - but it's the melody line *I* am looking for -

I'm one of those "vocal" people y'know - can't do the chord thing, cause I only got the one throat.

Appreciate the help Jeff - I'd make an attempt myself - but my only method is trial and error on the computer with a playback after each and every note - takes me a couple weeks to do a tune - and is usually pretty rough even after that.

Dragged up in Halifax, I was weaned on Websters and I would not recommend it to anyone! Whenever I could, I would dring Theakstons or Timothy Taylor (now there's a great beer!). Now exiled in the wilds of Kent, I exist on Shepherds Neame, brewed in Faversham - not a bad drop once you get the taste...

OK. I'll try to hook up with him soon. He probably doesn't have it written down, so he'll tell me to work it out myself. I just may have a go at it to begin with and just double-check with him. I can probably do an ABC with chords. I'm a Mac person, so I don't do NWC. I'm sure somebody can do a conversion for all you others. Hopefully, I can catch up with him this weekend.

Love the story Geordie!

To drif off the topic... I would agree that the Joshua Tetley is a better brew than the Tetley-Walker (I take it they are both still brewed) but I find both too bland for my own taste.

Living in Norfolk, I find the Woodefordes beers interesting but I think a bit of an acquired taste. County wise, Sulfolk would get my vote at the moment for Adnams Broadside.

Not thread creep - True story about Yorkshire beer!!!

Accountants at Tetley were looking for cost savings and did a financial analysis of the benefit of moving the brewery out of town and selling the valuable brewery site.

Unfortunately they had made no allowance for relocating the well under the brewery which supplied the water to give Tetley its superb bitter taste! The brewery is still in same location.

Tetley also brew in Warrington on other side of Pennines with Warrington water and the beer is no where near as good as Yorkshire Tetleys. Still - being on wrong side of Pennines means it is mainly drunk by non Yorkshire people!! Cheers Geordie Broon

Josh would work, but it feels kind of slurry singing it that way. Perhaps I'll ask Peter next time I see him.

Yes, it was written by Peter. I've wondered about the Tetley name myself. I suspect it's poetic licence to make it fit the rhythm. BTW, for Maryland Mudcatters, Peter plays frequently at the Last Chance Saloon in Columbia. He does a very nice audience-friendly show.

Surley it's Joshua Tetley not John Tetley in Leeds? One of my least favourite bitters BTW.

In the chorus, it's "The White Bear, the Star and the Plough. And the chap in Scotland is McEwen, I believe. Other than those, it looks correct to me.

THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE
(Peter J. Benson (?))

I'm a travelling man, that's for certain.
Some folk think that drinkin's me job,
But I need a small ale just to tell a tall tale
For which people will pay a few bob.

I've travelled all over this country.
I've drunk in the east and the west,
But from Lancing to Wick I can march double quick
For the pubs up in Yorkshire are best.

CHORUS: So here's to the grand pubs of Yorkshire:
The White Bear, the Owl, and the Crown, [or "the Star, and the Plough"?]
The Admiral Ben and the Parson's Revenge.
I wish I were drinking there now!

Of London, I've not much to tell thee,
And Devon's got cream cheese and tea,
And Kent's got its meads, but it's better in Leeds
Where John Tetley's the brewer for me.

In Birmingham town I got stranded.
It's down in the Midlands, you know,
Where the beer is all flat--I could never drink that--
And the barkeeps are all bloody slow. CHORUS

There's a chap called McEwan in Scotland,
And the beer that he brews isn't bad,
But the secrets he knew for the beer that he brews
He stole from an old Yorkshire lad.

I once knew a chap went to Ireland
Where the beer is so dark that it's black,
But the whisky is fine and the girls there divine,
So I don't know if he's coming back. CHORUS

Now I know what some people are thinkin',
That to leave such a heaven I'm mad,
But when I left me home and decided to roam,
Well, I didn't know that beer could be bad. CHORUS

Transcribed by Shadowmonk and friends
From "Lyve Behind Bars" - Pyrates Royale

**(Chorus is from memory - not sure that it is accurate - Mmario)
