Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: GUEST,peter benson Date: 27 Aug 03 - 05:16 AM Didin't know this thread was here until Roger Knowles told me the other day. Jeff is right about the reasons for John. I think Roy Hardacre in Harrogate has a few copies of the cd left, you can contact him through the Empress Folk club in Harrogate. Peter |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 30 Dec 02 - 10:13 AM Does seem odd, doesn't it? Mayhaps someone will beat me to it...otherwise I will try to get this on tape and shipped out...will PM you when I need an address. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Noreen Date: 30 Dec 02 - 10:00 AM err... send me a tape, MMario?! (All the way round the world to get a Yorkshire song to Lancashire!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 29 Dec 02 - 01:33 PM Noreen - I can *sing* it - I can't put the tune down tho'. Hopefully someone will soon that can - or get it from Peter. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Noreen Date: 29 Dec 02 - 01:28 PM any advance on the tune front? Please? :0) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 15 May 02 - 02:34 PM I *knew* that; honest! (always prufred!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Celtic Soul Date: 14 May 02 - 06:09 PM Yes, it is most definitely written by Peter Benson. And, it may be "Josh", but our gallant Captain says "John". It may be that Peter does not. I can ask him for ya if you like? And Mmario? That's "Pyrates RoyalE"...with an e at the end, luv! :D |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: jeffp Date: 24 Oct 01 - 10:49 AM No problem, Mmario! I've been meaning to learn this one for a while now. It's about time I got off my ass and did it. Now that the MDRF is over, I can get back to some other priorities. BTW, I saw you on the wall Saturday, but I was busy with the family and couldn't get over to say hi. jeffp |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 24 Oct 01 - 10:20 AM *twitch* I'll be grateful for anything "we" can get - but it's the melody line *I* am looking for - I'm one of those "vocal" people y'know - can't do the chord thing, cause I only got the one throat. Appreciate the help Jeff - I'd make an attempt myself - but my only method is trial and error on the computer with a playback after each and every note - takes me a couple weeks to do a tune - and is usually pretty rough even after that. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Arnie Date: 24 Oct 01 - 10:20 AM Dragged up in Halifax, I was weaned on Websters and I would not recommend it to anyone! Whenever I could, I would dring Theakstons or Timothy Taylor (now there's a great beer!). Now exiled in the wilds of Kent, I exist on Shepherds Neame, brewed in Faversham - not a bad drop once you get the taste... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: jeffp Date: 24 Oct 01 - 09:59 AM OK. I'll try to hook up with him soon. He probably doesn't have it written down, so he'll tell me to work it out myself. I just may have a go at it to begin with and just double-check with him. I can probably do an ABC with chords. I'm a Mac person, so I don't do NWC. I'm sure somebody can do a conversion for all you others. Hopefully, I can catch up with him this weekend. jeffp |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 24 Oct 01 - 09:09 AM hey Jeff! if you do see Peter - ask him if he would let us have the music, yes? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Jon Freeman Date: 24 Oct 01 - 09:06 AM Love the story Geordie! To drif off the topic... I would agree that the Joshua Tetley is a better brew than the Tetley-Walker (I take it they are both still brewed) but I find both too bland for my own taste. Living in Norfolk, I find the Woodefordes beers interesting but I think a bit of an acquired taste. County wise, Sulfolk would get my vote at the moment for Adnams Broadside. Jon |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 23 Oct 01 - 03:17 PM JoeOffer - I just noticed I screwed up the line breaks - will send it to you when you're back in better format and the corrections made. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: John Routledge Date: 23 Oct 01 - 03:00 PM Not thread creep - True story about Yorkshire beer!!! Accountants at Tetley were looking for cost savings and did a financial analysis of the benefit of moving the brewery out of town and selling the valuable brewery site. Unfortunately they had made no allowance for relocating the well under the brewery which supplied the water to give Tetley its superb bitter taste! The brewery is still in same location. Tetley also brew in Warrington on other side of Pennines with Warrington water and the beer is no where near as good as Yorkshire Tetleys. Still - being on wrong side of Pennines means it is mainly drunk by non Yorkshire people!! Cheers Geordie Broon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 23 Oct 01 - 02:13 PM possibly - may just be the way we hear it too! Maybe Jeff can ask Peter. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: jeffp Date: 23 Oct 01 - 02:09 PM Josh would work, but it feels kind of slurry singing it that way. Perhaps I'll ask Peter next time I see him. jeffp |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Jon Freeman Date: 23 Oct 01 - 02:07 PM How would one shorten Joshua - I'd have thought Josh rather than John? Jon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: jeffp Date: 23 Oct 01 - 02:06 PM Yes, it was written by Peter. I've wondered about the Tetley name myself. I suspect it's poetic licence to make it fit the rhythm. BTW, for Maryland Mudcatters, Peter plays frequently at the Last Chance Saloon in Columbia. He does a very nice audience-friendly show. jeffp |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 23 Oct 01 - 02:05 PM Joshua wouldn't scan. maybe just "J." Tetley? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: Jon Freeman Date: 23 Oct 01 - 01:58 PM Surley it's Joshua Tetley not John Tetley in Leeds? One of my least favourite bitters BTW. Jon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 23 Oct 01 - 01:56 PM Thanks Jeff - it is one of Peter's isn't it? I can't get to his website to check - the address I had comes up wrong. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: jeffp Date: 23 Oct 01 - 01:49 PM In the chorus, it's "The White Bear, the Star and the Plough. And the chap in Scotland is McEwen, I believe. Other than those, it looks correct to me. jeffp |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE From: MMario Date: 23 Oct 01 - 12:58 PM THE GRAND PUBS OF YORKSHIRE (Peter J. Benson (?))
I'm a travelling man, that's for certain.
I've travelled all over this country.
CHORUS: So here's to the grand pubs of Yorkshire:
Of London, I've not much to tell thee,
In Birmingham town I got stranded.
There's a chap called McEwan in Scotland,
I once knew a chap went to Ireland
Now I know what some people are thinkin',
Transcribed by Shadowmonk and friends **(Chorus is from memory - not sure that it is accurate - Mmario)
