Does anyone know if Abilene (allegedly written by as many different people as have recorded it!) is really a traditional song? Based on a traditonal song? Or actually a copyrighted, original in the last 71 years song? Any feedback would be appreciated. DocWood

I heard Bob Gibson in concert a while ago. He said that when he wrote 'Abilene', he had never actually been to Abilene, Tx, it just rhymed well. After he had recorded the song, he finally visited. He said, "It's not the prettiest town I've ever seen!"

That's probably 'cause he went to Abilene, TEXAS. Now, if he'd gone to Abilene, KANSAS...
