He is on TV as I write this he is giving a speech from a packaging plant. Since Sept 11, he has constantly improved in his public speaking ability. The message is getting more refined.

In the few minutes I watched him speak a banner announced about 5,000 layoffs at Sears and even more at Kodak. Ironically he was talking about fixing the economy being an important part of homeland security at the time.

We live in interesting times.

Jack- Interesting times, indeed. Tonight I learned that Hershey, the parent company of Jolly Rancher Candies, will soon close it's Wheat Ridge, Colorado plant entirely, costing several hundred jobs. They produce "Fire Sticks", and the little candies of many flavors capable of pulling a loose tooth out.

I realize 300 jobs is small time compared to what's going on in the airline, hotel and other industries. But this hits close to home. Jolly Rancher has long been an icon in the Denver business community, in business for 52 years. I grew up near the plant, and the smells eminating from the plant are one of my earliest childhood memories. I grew up with the attractive barn-red architecture of the plant, and the guesses of what flavor candy they were making as we drove past.

Hershey will be closing a couple of other plants in Pennsylvania, as well, and hopes to cut a couple of thousand jobs. They still plan to make the popular candies, just not in Colorado. I will consider this the next time I think of buying a Hershey product. Sigh, BlueJay

Very intersting. I just visited the Hershey's website, www.hersheys.com. Plenty of info regarding Mr. Milton Hershey, the company's founder, and work ethic and all of that. But nowhere on their site could I find any "contact" link. Apparantly they don't want to be bothered by actual consumer input. Think about that before you buy your next hershey's with little cookie pieces in it. BlueJay

He'd probably want to put bin Laden in a lock-box.

BlueJay, does that mean no more Jolly Ranchers, at all? That's really sad. I did find some contact info, but no email, unless you want to submit a resume.:-)

We value your input and support. If you have comments or questions about our online cookbook, please call a Consumer Relations Representative at 1-800-468-1714 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. EST or send a letter to:

Pretty lame, huh. That phone number is the same one for consumer comments in general.

Maybe Hershey was losing money because not enough people were gobbling down Jolly Ranchers! They can't stay in business unless they are profitable, right? They don't do business as a service to the people of Colorado, the make candy to make money.

It's awful that so many people will be out of work, but that's just the way things work in a capitalist country.
