Anybody know when they set the clocks back in the UK? We set ours back this weekend here in the US.

I didn't know the UK had Daylight Saving Time. Huh! I learned something new today.

Yeah, it was this weekend. What I don't understand is, if clocks changing is about the hours of usable daylight, how come they go back eight weeks before the equinox but don't go forward again until fourteen weeks after. Why's that then?

Eight weeks from now is the SOLSTICE - not the equinox.

I was just in the loo and I thought 'Why did I write solstice when I meant equinox?' Duh!

And then a nanosecond after I sent that last post I realised that I'd done it again. That's what happens when work gets in the way of the Mudcat.

Well I think daylight savings time here was started so people would have extra daylight during the summer in order to work on the farms, or something like that. Anyway thanks for the replies I know that was a silly thing to ask on Mudcat but I figured folks would be nice and indulge me!

During the last war we had double daylight saving in UK which up here in the north of Scotland resulted in people sitting out in their gardens at 10.00 at night. Jock

Apparently, at some points during the war, they even had tripple daylight savings time! I've still have'nt figured out why it makes any real difference to the average pleb's day. I think it's an evil ploy by those in power to keep us disoriented, disorientated, confused.

I think the more relevant point is why! I am not convinced of the farming thing. Surely a farmer will work to the available daylight anyway - regardless of the time. Can anyone put the record straight on this as it has puzzled me for years?

Cheers

I think that daylight saving practices came in (in Britain) during the Great War, as much to allow factories to work in daylight and save on the fuel used in lighting, as to help farmers.

In 1973 as a result of the ENERGY CRISIS

...well, ladyP, looks like the gremlins have got us for sure on this thread!

As I was trying to say, in 1973 during the vaunted ENERGY CRISIS, the US tried to go to Daylight Savings Time all year round. It was a disaster.

As far as I know, the US started the clock shift not during the Great War, but during WWII. I remember seeing magazines from the 40s that mentioned "Eastern War Time". And I belive that fuel savings was the original impetus for the change.

Here in Hawaii, of course, we can't tell the seasons apart, so we don't do Daylight Savings Time. So the calculation of "what time is it on the Mainland?" keeps changing. Right now, my daughter in Colorado is 3 hours later than I am, my friends in Seattle are 2 hours later, Mudcat time is 5 hours later, and GMT is 10 hours later. And we won't even talk about Australia.

Did anybody besides me wonder as a child how the earth knew to slow down or speed up when the time changed?

Aloha,
Mark

I read a Reuters wire service story about Britain's National Sleep Council issuing a recommendation for daily siestas here, saying that the clock-changing day is "National Sleep-in Day". Why don't we in the USA have a Sleep Council? Or do we, and was Ronald Reagan its chairman...

Getting back to an earlier question. The equinoxes are in March & Sept. We change clocks in April & Oct. Why don't we make the changes closer to when the days are 12 hrs. long? By the end of Oct. we are noticably getting up in the dark & dark at 5 is a sudden shock. I think I'd rather see both changes made about 3 weeks earlier.

It's very easy, alison. You're normally four hours earlier than we are in Hawaii, but that's tomorrow, although for you it's today. So since you're in spring, even though we're having fall (well, we would be having fall except there aren't any deciduous trees here so we really can't tell), your clocks go ahead, which means you're only 3 hours earlier, tomorrow, that is to say, 21 hours later than today. Which is, of course, yesterday for you. Then, once you know what time it is in Hawaii, it's easy to convert to Mudcat time by adding 5 hours. Or subtracting 5 hours. Or something. See how easy it is?

Aloha,
Mark

Just to add further confusion, our clocks went forward three weeks ago.

Thank you Jock for confirming double daylight saving. I mentioned it when NZ started the saving thing about twenty years ago and no one believed me.

So WHY don't the clocks change back and forth the same time either side of the solstice, if it's just about the amount of daylight hours?

"Mainland Western Europe" (for the want of a better term) operates on Central European Time [CET], which is 1 hour ahead of British Standard Time [BST].
Both areas use daylight saving time in summer. HOWEVER, until recently, CET clocks changed on a different date from BST Clocks (or vice versa).
So, if you were in London, Paris was one hour ahead most of the year, but for two weeks it was two hours ahead, and for another two weeks, London & Paris were on the same time!
Great fun for Airline schedules!

Become self-employed!

You can get as much rest as you like, whenever you like.

The overall stress involved is however much greater.

Guess we set the clocks back the same times other folk do: either the evening before or the morning after the official hour of change. Not many of us stay up till 2am just to change the clocks:-) Sorry, couldn't resist; I'll get by coat...

Half the time I forget to change & end up an hour early or late. The only reason I remembered this year was because I have a clock radio that I was listening to just as I went to bed & they mentioned it.
