Thanks very much for this, Joe.

Neither version makes perfect sense to me, but there's a lot there to play with. I love the tune, though.

Must be what they call poetic licence.

The Gallagher & Lyle version I found is a bit different:

FIRST LEAVES OF AUTUMN (G&L version)
(Benny Gallagher & Graham Lyle)

As the daylight turns to starlight
And the seasons turn to change,
I get the same old answers
But the questions still remain.

We shared the brief but magic song,
By the first leaves of autumn you were gone.

Not until the rain touched my face,
Not until the first leaf fell from place,
Not until that moment did I see,
Never realized what you meant to me.

From the days you filled with sunlight
And the laughter in your eyes,
To the making of the breaking,
Of the day we said goodbye.

The very words cut to the bone,
By the first leaves of autumn you were gone.

Not until my heart's defence is down,
Not until some old come-all-ye comes round,
Not until that moment do I see
What you meant to me.

Not until the rain touched my face,
Not until the first leaf fell from place,
Not until that moment did I see,
What you meant to me.

Gurney, I moved you over here to a previous thread in the song.

Here are some Fureys Youtube links to the song:

The transcriptions above are from Gallagher & Lyle recordings of the song. Here's my transcription of the Fureys recording. I gather the songwriters are Gallagher & Lyle?

from this Fureys recording (others are different): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXCFZzRzDug

MudGuard's transcription above is closer to this Furey's recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcPvwaoo43k

The line in question could be:
Not until some old come-all-ye comes down
But repeating "down" two lines in a row isn't kosher....

Note that early recordings begin with the word "As."

Here's a recent live recording (probably not available in UK): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BECBIuXEK04

Subject: Phrase req. The First Leaves of Autumn
From: Gurney
Date: 06 Aug 17 - 12:21 AM

Towards the end of the final verse of this lovely song as sung by Finbar Furey is the term; (My spelling)not until... 'Sommall Kummallia'... comes round.

Another cover on Youtube has it more like 'another come-all-ye.'

Neither makes any sense to this anglophone, and I'd like to sing the song. Is it a Gaelic festival or season? Thanks.

I saw the Fureys and Davey Arthur perform First Leaves of Autumn recently - Eddie's harmonica playing on the introduction really adds to it! Thanks to the contributors on this website for helping me with the words and the guitar chords.    lynfie

Effsee,

Many thanks for info!

For Kenny B above 4 years ago, if you're still interested in suggestions on how to achieve all the chords, try playing G shapes capoed on 2nd or 3rd fret

The line in question is

'Not until some other Come-All- Ye comes round'
Incidentally, as I frequently perform this beautiful song, I get asked who wrote it.

Anyone know the author?

Does anyone know the chords to this Gallagher And Lyle song? It was originally written for the Furey's butthe G & L version has just been released for the first time on an album called 'The River Sessions'.

Radio Clyde in Glasgow discovered a load of stuff in their archives and are starting to release it including some stuff from the legendary Glasgow Apollo. G & L allowed their version of the song to be released on their album.

May anyone help me to get the lyrics for this song? As far as I know, there is a version of the Fureys as well as one of Rory Gallagher. Thank you.
