Subject: 'No More Beer From Kendal' Info Please
From: Bat Goddess
Date: 30 Oct 01 - 10:17 AM

I learned this song several years ago from George Stevens (I stuck a microphone in his face and forced him to sing it) after he sang it in a sessios of "the world's saddest songs." (Kathy Westra sang Johnny Handle's "The Old Pubs".)

Who wrote it? And what beer is no longer brewed in Kendal?

Oh, and "We turned my feet down _______ Street and called to all we chanced to meet." -- what's the street name?

Thanks!

Bat Goddess

Hmmmm - got me thinking now. I think the brewery MAY have been Yates and Jackson but I'm not sure.

I'm on a quest...!

If it was Yates and Jackson, see here. Stopped brewing in 1984; Lancaster, Lancashire.

NO MORE BEER FROM KENDAL
From the singing of George Stevens

As we came in by Strickland Gate
To the marketplace once morning
We saw the lads from the bar
Their faces full of warning.
Turn around, don't get down,
Stay on your bikes and leave this town.
Chorus: And they all were singin', "My, my, the brewery's dry
Hear us cry, there'll be no more beer from Kendal."

Now the Brigsteer boys made lots of noise
In the White Hart and Victoria.
Lord, lord, the temperance hoard
Sang "Exultate gloria."
The Globe was slack, the Union black
The Oddfellows were all laid back. (Chorus)

Now we drank away that market day
With the working folk of Kendal.
For to close down the pride of the town
The owners must be mental.
We turned our feet down Fingal[??] Street, Called to all we chanced to meet. (Chorus)

Now they brew the hops from the mountain tops
And the malt was a local barley
Yeast from a mythical beast
And water from the valley.
Now the hops are gone, the water still,
The barley goes to Yorkshire swill. (Chorus)

Now the beer comes up from Overton
From Lancaster and Burton.
Peculiar ales from distant dales
Their pedigrees uncertain.
And taps have trumped the old hand pumps
From Worthington to Boston Stumps. (Chorus)

Now a new sound falls on the brewery walls
From the music maker's fingers.
Change days, Shakespeare plays,
Poets and bearded singers.
And the ghosts have fled to the Old Nag's Head
In the brewery they'll not be seen dead. (Chorus)

(Hope I caught all my Mac-keyboard-real-quote-marks.)

Yep - right there, cookie-less Sorcha! The arts centre in Kendal is called the Old Brewery Arts Centre - I got the following info from their website HERE.

Highgate's first Brewery was licensed in 1758 on or near the site of the town house of the Wilsons of Dallam Tower.

Its first owner was John Whitwell, whose family lived nearby at 122 Highgate for many years. The business prospered, was taken over byWilliam Mark, and in 1858, a new brewery was built in the gardens of the old Wilson house.

Whitwell, Mark and Co became a private limited company in 1883 and remained as such until a take-over by Vaux Breweries of Sunderland in the late 1940s.

The company's boom time was the 1930s, supplying 30 pubs across Westmorland with their famous Auld Kendal. The last brew was produced between 13 and 16 September 1968.

After being bought by the Lake District Theatre Trust Limited in 1970, work started on converting the Grade III Listed building into a modern arts centre. On 10 May, 1972, the Brewery Arts and Community Centre, consisting in those early days of a small theatre and two other rooms, opened its doors to the public.

The only other breweries referenced as being in Kendal are CARTMEL (moved from cartmel in 1995 and closed in 1998) and LAKELAND (Ceased at the Masons Arms in 1997 but was contract brewed at Burton Bridge anyway!)

Dunno about the street though. I guess it is the Arts centre that George was on about - I think there is something sad about old industries becoming trendy/arty type places. Better than being demolished though!

Cheers

A pure guess on my part but a quick search on google yeilded this:

"The Arts Centre is housed in a lovely building, situated just off Highgate in the heart of Kendal. As the name suggests, the building used to be a brewery and dates back to 1858. Originally owned by the Whitwell family, the brewery was taken over by William Mark and became a private limited company (Whitwell, Mak and Co) in 1883. Finally the business was taken over by Vaux Breweries of Sunderland in the late 1940's. The Breweries' hey day was in the 1930's, when it was supplying 30 pubs across Westmorland with the famous 'Auld Kendal'.

Two years after the last brew was produced in September 1968, the building was bought by the Lake District Theatre Trust Limited who spent the next two years turning the Grade II listed building in to a modern arts centre. When the Brewery Arts and Community Centre first opened in 1972, it consisted of a small theatre and just two other rooms. "

and it is a wonderful song!...I have heard George Stevens sing it for several years, and 'tis a finely crafted piece with a tricky melody that gets in your head and carries the message perfevtly. Hear it if you can.

Thanks so much, everybody!

Verification of author would be appreciated, too, as the name of the street mentioned.

How I love Mudcat! I always get answers. What an incredible resource (that's YOU, Mudcatters!)!

Yep, it's a Dave Goulder song - George Stephens is my hubby, and he learned it from one of Dave's albums - I can't remember which one right now. We have a specialty of singing "dying industry" songs, and it's one of our favorites!

Don't know if it's Finkle or Fingle Street in Lynn's missing line, though - is there a Dave Goulder songbook in print?

What goes around...

Last night, Kathy Westra and I (now living together in Rockland, Maine) were composing a set list for our upcoming gig at The Rock City Cafe (Sept. 19). We decided to sing "The Old Pubs", then thought pairing that with "No More Beer From Kendal" would be devilishly clever, having no recollection of the events described above.

A little Google research reveals: Brigsteer is a small village just west of Kendal; Sedbergh, a larger village a few miles east of Kendal has a Finkle St., and The White Hart Sports and Social Club. I couldn't find the Victoria.

Kendal still has a Finkle Street (postcode LA9 4AB) which is now pedestrianised and runs roughly southwest from Stramongate/Kent St to Highgate/Old Shambles Yard.

Google maps does not show the street name, but if you click on any of the premises along the street it will - e.g Lloyds Bank, 11 Finkle Street.
