LEAD - is pronounced LED here in England or at least in my part of England where the E is a very very flat vowel

Just out of curiosity, is that pronouced "led" or "leed"? Out here where I am, the base metal is "led" but in a mine where a thread of ore is found, it is "leed". The town in South Dakota is Leed.

Just to put it in context, the song appeared in the 1792 operatic farce Hartford-Bridge, or, The Skirts of the Camp (Librettist: William Pearce, Composer: William Shield and others).  Shield (1748-1829) began his working life as a boat-builder's apprentice in County Durham, but wound up in London as a successful viola player(!) and theatrical composer.  He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1817.

Sounds suspiciously like a coruption of an old pilots memonic. Particullay with the verse about transits.

To heave the lead the Seaman sprung,
