LEAD - is pronounced LED here in England or at least in my part of England where the E is a very very flat vowel

Just out of curiosity, is that pronouced "led" or "leed"? Out here where I am, the base metal is "led" but in a mine where a thread of ore is found, it is "leed". The town in South Dakota is Leed.

Just to put it in context, the song appeared in the 1792 operatic farce Hartford-Bridge, or, The Skirts of the Camp (Librettist: William Pearce, Composer: William Shield and others).  Shield (1748-1829) began his working life as a boat-builder's apprentice in County Durham, but wound up in London as a successful viola player(!) and theatrical composer.  He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1817.

Sounds suspiciously like a coruption of an old pilots memonic. Particullay with the verse about transits.

Nice song Mmario.

Levy box 38 item 71

THE HEAVING OF THE LEAD
(W. Shield)

1. For England, when with fav'ring gale,
Our gallant Ship up Channel steer'd
And, scudding under easy sail,
The high blue western land appear'd
To heave the lead the Seaman sprung,
And to the Pilot cheerly sung
"BY THE DEEP, NINE! BY THE DEEP, NINE!"
To heave the lead the Seaman sprung
And to the Pilot cheerly sung
"BY THE DEEP, NINE!"

2. And bearing up to gain the Port,
Some well known object kept in view,
And Abbey tow'r, an Harbour fort,
Or Beacon to the Vessel true
While oft the lead the Seaman flung,
And to the Pilot cheerly sung
"BY THE MARK, SEVEN! BY THE MARK, SEVEN! "
While oft the lead the Seaman flung,
And to the Pilot cheerly sung,
"BY THE MARK, SEVEN!"

3. And, as the much lov'd Shore we near,
With transport we beheld the roof
Where dwelt a Friend, or Partner dear,
Of faith and love a matchless proof:
The lead once more the Seaman flung
And to the watchful Pilot sung,
"QUARTER LESS FIVE! QUARTER LESS FIVE!"
The lead once more the Seaman flung
And to the watchful Pilot sung,
"QUARTER LESS FIVE!"
