Subject: Duke Univ. Conference on Public Domain
From: T in Oklahoma (Okiemockbird)
Date: 30 Oct 01 - 08:42 PM

Duke University and the Center for the Public Domain have organized a conference on the public domain in so-called "intellectual property" law, to be held on November 9-11, 2001. Featured speakers include Yochai Benkler, Lawrence Lessig, and James Boyle. The conference home page is at http://www.law.duke.edu/pd/index.html.

A draft of Professor Boyle's paper can be found at:

http://www.law.duke.edu/pd/papers/boyle.pdf

Professor Boyle opens his paper with the following humorous rhyme:

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from off the goose.

The law demands that we atone
When we take things we do not own
But leaves the lords and ladies fine
Who take things that are yours and mine.

The poor and wretched don't escape
If they conspire the law to break;
This must be so but they endure
Those who conspire to make the law.

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
And geese will still a common lack
Till they go and steal it back

T.

The conference appears to have been well-attended.

Here is the Slashdot discussion of the conference. (By the way, almost every time I read a Slashdot discussion, I again feel thankful for the existence of the Mudcat.)

Here is the entrance to the discussion BBS. You can read the posts there by clicking on "GUEST", but your browser must be set to exchange cookies.
