Catspaw's hair may be longer than mine - but it may well be thinner than mine is, too.
Nonetheless, it was a pleasure meeting him.

Some weeks ago it was reported here that a US site which had hundreds of Country style audio files was about to close? Did the lady involved find a new home? I only managed one visit prior to that time.

LMAO Mortee, yes, I hereby give Cletus back to the world.

Well, see, that's the thing about us brazen hussies.... I'd completely forgotten my pledge of purity and chastity to the Literary Guild and Green Tea bunch. Talk about having to do some serious back-tracking. I swear, it must be the iron undies cutting off the blood flow to my brain.

Dear Sir Dickalot,
I accept thine offer of peace and pledge to you an acceptance of peace, albeit notwithstanding that yon harlot JenEllen ( and I know of which I speak since she and I are sisters of the blood) shall give up all rights to the yokel known as Cletus, it being well understood that she hath pledged her troth to three blood-hounds, an afghan and a tortoishell cat by the name of "Tiddles".

Hey SINSULL! Did you see my answer to your 'worm eating' post on the secret Santa Thread? cheers.

Hey Cletus did you ever solve that roadkill dependence thing?

Anyone else have a bad case of Mudcat Effect? I keep trying to make friends with everybody I meet. Post Getaway Partum, I assume.

I think it should be a fresh start each time it gets to a certain number of posts, and then just wipe the slate clean. You know-- like you have not seen one another since a nice long sleep, and it's a new day, with new stuff on your mind. With a new opening question to make an optional topic. Also, by now, if you are on some hot topic with someone, you know you can PM them on that.

But I don't really care.

I have a new topic in mind so....

SINSULL, our "GUEST" certainly does have a problem, though I suspect it has little or nothing to do with chat or bandwidth (it may have something to do with spelling, though; GUEST, the word is properly spelled "conserve").

Susan, I say let's continue the experiment! It seems that we truly have condensed three or four potential BS threads into one, so actually we are being conservational as well as conversational! For my own part, I didn't feel comfortable starting a new thread in order to talk about my cat's treatment, but I did want to chat about it and get some feedback – the "Oh, God, what have I done?" syndrome – and this thread was a great (safe) place for me to do so! Thanks!

Please do post more "MudChat of the Day" threads. The people who insist on interrupting BS threads to complain that they're not music threads will never be assuaged because people will always BS, even in a music thread. What a dry, cheerless place this would be if we were not allowed to chat, or tell jokes, or cheer each other up, or discuss anything but music at any time; it would be the Taliban of websites.

Well, Suze, judging by the length of this thread and the overall quality of postings, I'd say your experiment was a grand success! The only concern I'd have is that if we separate them by day we lose some continuity. OTOH, if we don't separate them somehow, they will get too large. I guess they will work themselves out somehow. I like the freeform area for just general chit-chat, though. Who knows, maybe these threads will spawn some other threads that might not otherwise have gotten started. I think we should continue.

Gee I love it when people attack an experiment even before the results are in. Sounds like fear, to me-- rigid, unintelligent, unwarranted fear. ("You are making the sky fall!") I did think it might cut the level of silly stuff in places where people seem to have such a problem with it, and maybe even the number of BS threads, over time. Or maybe it was a personal troll or attack-- I strongly doubt that the same posts were inserted into all of the other BS threads now running. And I did, of course, use the BS: prefix so the two BS-filters in use would screen it out for our music-only element.

I dunno-- continue the experiment, or abort? What say you, IDENTIFIABLE Mudcatters?

I thought this was a "Chat" thread where we could spare the music threads a lot of grief???? And Guest still has a problem?

I have a ton of candy left after all six trick-or-treaters left. The local parade was a bust.Damn terrorists! It is all packed in pretty little gift bags too. Ah well...

Kendall, if you are going on a mini-adventure, we expect pictures and regular diary entries. Maybe we can get Micca to fly back and accompany you.

Jeri, I am in and out of the post-festival blues. I am rummaging through local papers and Pinewood's mailing hoping for a fix. AOL's personals are starting to look good but so far no banjo players. I did receive an enormous bouquet of flowers today...but the cats got into it and coughed greenery up all over the place. Tinker sent me a CD of cockney ditties. Maybe that will work.
Harpgirl - it is a scary business. Been there and done that twice before. Both times were false alarms. Try to stay busy. Distraction helps.

Me•gil•lah (mú-g*l2ú) n. 1. Judaism The scroll containing the biblical narrative of the Book of Esther, traditionally read in synagogues to celebrate the festival of Purim. 2. megillah Slang A tediously detailed or embroidered account: told us the whole megillah. [ Hebrew megillâ scroll from gElal to roll]

Just set the date, and lemme know, Capn.

As for the proposed wedding, I must insist out of respect for protocol that banns be published. I think there are a few Mudders about who might want to lodge objections. One of them would be Cletus' parents, considering he was only invented less than three years ago!! Then there's the Mudcat Literary and Green Tea Soiree group who won't stand to have their sear hidden behind a bushel of Cletus' corrosive dimensions. There's a score of Y-gifted lurkers who would see their dreams go up in smoke!! And what would the back-room girls have to whisper about??? No, friends, this would be selling a National Asset down de ribber.

A

I'm lucky with my "kids"....Celine & Therese, kitty siblings, picked up a herpes virus when they were only a month old! Almost lost Celine, but she's a fighter...since we have chronic eye problems, the vet suggested L-Lysine tablets for them both. I grind their pills to dust, then mix with their morning canned breakfast. Fortunately, they're not finicky.

SharonA, best of luck to you and Artie!

Cats are funny like that, ain't they? Thumper noticed that every morning, the dogs were getting a biscuit when I got out of the shower. So he started asking for treats too. And now he'll sit by his dish in the morning and wait for his crunchies. And it's so funny, he'll be sitting there all nonchalant, and when I get that bag of treats, his eyes get all big. :-)

The dogs each have a floor spot up in the bedroom. Belle the Younger will get up on the bed sometimes in the night. Zenith the Elder will get up on the bed if there's a thunderstorm. Thumper the Eldest Statesman sleeps downstairs in the summer, and upstairs beside warm people in the winter. He does this completely on his own. When he was a wee kitty, he would crawl up under the covers.

My brother's cat takes meds for his thyroid, too and is so good about it, he goes to the bathroom door, where they are stored, when he knows it is time to take them and looks at my bro until he gets over there and gives them to him. He knows he feels better if he takes them. It's really amazing.

My sweet Homey cat takes his medicine all by himself. I put it down with some Pounce treats and he just eats it. Given that the vet and an assistant couldn't get anything into him even when he was wrapped in a towel, I am grateful to the old guy for cooperating.

Oh no, Sharon. It's just curiosity on my part more than anything. You'd be amazed how many options there are, and none of them wrong, just things that certain people have had luck with or feel better doing. What are you feeding him? Something you might try, to get him back in fighting form (and providing his kidneys are okay), is to grab a can or two of Science Diet canned kitten food. Loads of good calories there, and it also works nice as a treat to just give him a spoonful in addition to his regular food.

Jeez Sorch, just how big is your bed? Does the mister have his own room or something? LOL

LOL, Jen. Nobody wins against this cat. She has extra claws on all four feet and the disposition of a demon. The crisis was apparently about 3AM. Hellcat sleeps behind my back and Winnie did not know there was a right/wrong side of the bed to get into in the dark. She leaped, Hellcat went berserk, and I slept through it all. Noticed her eye when I got up.

Thanks again, JenEllen. I dunno; maybe I didn't investigate my options as fully as I should have, but what's done is done. The pilling would have been more stressful for ME (between incurring Artie's ire twice a day and trying to find a pill-giving pet-sitter whenever I wanted to take a vacation)! I've already gone through the subcutaneous-fluid routine with my other (now deceased) cat Chester (Chester & Arthur... get it?), so the thought of another long-term medication regimen was anathema!!!

No, I was just thinking of the normal risks of anesthesia. He has had a bout with stress-diabetes, though (ever hear of that? I hadn't), and he's down to around 6 pounds, so I'm all for avoiding any stress that might put him off his feed... and the iodine seems to me to be generally less stressful to the body than surgery. Actually, my vet never suggested surgery as an option; the risks I listed are from the radiology center's info.

Thanks for the tip about Pounce's Hairball Treats! I think I'll try them for his hairballs in any case!

Sorcha, I'm happy to hear that Winnie will be okay! Hmmm... I've heard of Border Collies, but never Boarder Corgis... ;^)

Didn't seem fair to take just one for a ride so I took all 4 of them............got steriod/antibiotic for the eye and Winnie will be fine. Intersting, Sharon. I've seen the iodine therapies used before, but have never had call to use them myself. The majority of methimazole side effects tend to clear up pretty quickly after you get the balance right, and it's certainly no more stressful than having to go through chemo. I can understand it for cost though, if he's only 13 and healthy otherwise, you could be looking at supporting his 'habit' for another 5 or 6 years at least! There are some comparable generics, however, that are dirt cheap. Did they give you reasons why he might be at risk for anesthesia (other than the usual)? Granted, our area isn't as advanced as most, but the general practice is just to remove the entire thyroid and supplement the T4 in pill form. The pills are fairly inexpensive, and if your doc has an in-house lab that can run bloodwork then the cost gets cut quite a bit there too. Should you ever find yourself medicating him for any lenght of time, I HIGHLY recommend Pounce's Hairball treats. If you pinch them like a coin-purse, they open up, you can hide a pill in there easily. We've had terrific luck with them. Saves on the vet bills, as well as the ER bills and blood transfusions for the owners!

Loads of nuzzles to Artie for when he's finally decontaminated, he's lucky to have you :)

Thanks, jeffp and JenEllen. Jeff, I'm sorry to hear that your kitty had to lose a leg, but I'm glad she's well now. My cat's name is Artie; he's a small, black-brown longhair of no particular breed, with a very sweet pet-me-hold-me-carry-me disposition.

JenEllen asks: "Why did they recommend the iodine over surgery?" Surgery's riskier for several reasons: anesthesia; possible damage to parathyroid glands; and difficulty removing the entire tumor, particularly in tissue in the chest. Often more than one surgery is required; there's a high probability that another tumor can develop on the opposite side or in the chest area within a couple of years. Many cats need the iodine therapy anyway, even after surgery!

Another option would've been an anti-thyroid drug called Tapazole, but the side effects include nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite – not helpful when I'm trying to get Artie to GAIN weight! It also damages the liver and kidneys, and interferes with blood-clotting. I would've had to pill him twice a day for life, and in only two years that would've cost as much as the iodine treatment (plus costs to treat the side effects, plus more frequent blood tests... eek!).

So the iodine seemed like the best long-range plan. He's 13, and an indoors-only cat, so I'm hoping to have him around for another 6-7 years (or more)!

Beautiful, Jenellen.

For a 4 minute and some seconds treat, please click here and scroll down to the real audio link in the Halloween Celebration story about Chicago's Redmoon Theatre. It's a really neat project the do each year for Halloween. It seems esp. significant for this year.

I have a new to me car! With a/c, a radio that works, and power steering and auto trannie, so my shoulders and sore ankle can have a break. We just drove over 1,000 miles in it this weekend and it didn't use a drop of oil! It's a 1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager. NOW, I have a soccer mom car and no kids left at home, but the dog thinks that's just peachy-keen, more room for him.

Merry Samhain, everyone!

One more for SharonA and Jeri... it's been fun. Tomorrow's another day.

"Have you ever been in love? Horrible, isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses. You build up this whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They don't ask for it. They do something dumb one day like kiss you, or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so a simple phrase like 'maybe we should just be friends' or 'how very perceptive' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a body-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love." - Ross Walker

Feel for ya, Sharon. Send that one to Bert: Does your kitten glow at night? Why did they recommend the iodine over surgery?

Alas, I'm way to far out of town and too far up a hill to warrant any trick-or-treaters. About the closest I've got are the band of coyotes who are determined to get themselves a treat from the garbage can (a treat for me as well, oh boy) I threw a bunch of apples in the clearing by the spring for the deer, and some good seeds out for the birds/squirrels/rabbits. Even the elk got some newly medicated salt-licks, so it's been mostly treats all the way around. As for myself, I talked to a good friend last night, and the sun was shining today in all sorts of ways. It's a treat to feel so blessed.

Tonight our streets are filled
With beardless pirates and their high-heeled wives
Who own no maps of treasure and have killed
Nobody with their aimless wooden knives
They cry to us for charity for their cups of tin
Tonight their plea is styled
With signs of poison and the threat of crones
While from behind a soap-scrawled windowpane
A pumpkin with a candle for a brain
Flashes it's hacked-out grin
At Jolly Roger, ensign of the child
Who stalks the street, superfluous of bones

One time the children came
Souling with little songs for all the dead
Soliciting in Mystery's full name
Apples and cakes and pies, for it was said
A hermit raised a trapdoor and was shown
Where purgatory burned
Whistled and hurt, he heard the demons yell
Against the monks of Cluny for their prayers
That lifted cripples up spiraled stairs
And singing made it known
To do grace to the dead, lest they returned
Apples were prayers, and giving was the spell

(Sorry, can't remember any more of it off the top of my frazzled brain...have to look it up tonight!)

Kim, eat a bit of that chocolate for me!!

~J

"Sometimes that laying-down of defenses doesn't even happen with lovers." Ain't THAT the truth! The next guy who tries to have a relationship with me (if there ever IS one) will have a lot of very high walls to scale... and my hair's not QUITE long enough for him to use as a climbing rope! (...but maybe for rappelling...)

Went shopping at lunch for Halloween wrapping paper. NOBODY HAS ANY. I finally bought a paper tablecloth. My former neighbor and I still exchange Halloween presents as well as Christmas presents every year, so tonight I'll be at his place for a while, drinking his beer. He's single, too, but *alas* too young for me! (...and not my type, anyway: drummer in a Christian rock band AUGGHH)

Last week I drove my cat from southeastern PA to Delaware and left him in a clinic for 4 days, for treatment of hyperthyroidism. They injected him with radioactive iodine-131; this is supposed to attack and destroy the benign tumor on his thyroid. All toys and bedding I left with him were discarded when I picked him up Friday. For the next two weeks after that day, I have to use flushable litter (and a rubber glove when I scoop, with a scooper that's to be discarded after the two weeks) because his body is eliminating radioactive waste and I can't put that in the dumpster (Federal regulations). For two weeks, I can't snuggle with him; I can't let him sleep on the bed (so he howls outside the bedroom door); I have to wash my hands whenever I pet him; I have to try to keep him off the furniture (ha ha ha! He got into the kitchen cabinet today – one of the UPPER ones!). Also, my wallet is A LOT lighter. The good news comes (hopefully) in 3 months when his thyroid levels are re-tested and he's weighed (again hopefully, the levels will be normal and he will have gained some pounds. Right now he's all skin and sinew). Any crossed fingers would be greatly appreciated!

Once we were in school - it was just about the ONLY night of the year we didn't have to be in early - the fact that there was a horde of us without going outside the family didn't hurt either - (up to eight - depending on who had parties, etc to go to) - and we went a few blocks in all directions from our house - hitting just about anyone who wasn't a "summer person" - as I said - mostly home-made treats back then - popcorn balls, freshly fried doughnut holes, spiced cider, taffy, fudge, rice krispy squares, cookies, hermits, - though some candy - mostly loose "Penny candy" type stuff. Our immediate neighbors actually gave away *gasp* FULL SIZE (!) Snickers (frozen) - and were quite popular!

And then we'd end with a walk past "the graveyard" - hoping that the White Lady of Shawme Lake wouldn't put in an appearance. (I usually skipped that part)

We don't get any kidlings since our house is far back off the road. We usually do get a bag of treats, though, "just in case" (winkwinknudgenudge). It's all right, though - maybe tonight I will finally get to watch West Wing without interruptions!

It's jus tnot the same as when we used to wait until 8:30 or 9:00 and then run around the neighborhood collecting loot. Of course back then most of the goodies would be home-made too - something you don't really dare let your kids eat these days unless you know the people who made them.

Mostly truth, GUEST, but sometimes that laying-down of defenses doesn't even happen with lovers. It also can be true for any relationship that goes beyond the superficial. I guess whenever that happens, you let yourself be vulnerable, and you have to offer that naked bit of yourself knowing full well your lover/friend/whatever may not respond in kind. If that happens, you just hope they don't make you feel stupid.

For Jeri...

...and another, perhaps posted elsewhere, mentioned a couple of times by member Don Firth:

You know what's the most terrifying thing about admitting that you're in love? You're just naked. You put yourself in harm's way and you lay down all your defences. No clothes, no weapons. Nowhere to hide, completely vulnerable. The only thing that makes it tolerable is to believe the other person loves you back and you can trust him not to hurt you.

My friend in the Army is still in the US, although working his ass off. He trains Guard units so maybe there is a good chance he will get to STAY in the US.

My special black and orange Halloween manicure has stayed on. (It glows in the dark.)

Holding steady at 120 pounds.

Ditto of Jeri to BillD here as well - fantastic stuff Bill - I had a number of items picked out - but since the money in my wallet was actually my sister's grocery money it's a good think I didn't purchase any.

Next year however, I intend to hit Getaway in a financially flush position!

Well, I just came back from being interviewed, on camera no less, by our local TV news channel (an NBC affiliate), talking about terrorism, my take on the current attacks given my background with a prior one, and suchlike. It will probably involve about 45 secs on the news in their Human Interest part, or something, but they did say they wanted me for Sweeps week... I'll try to get a file of it, rather than a videotape. It was very interesting and I loved seeing the guts of a TV station, at least!

I think GUEST was reading my mind! Boy, ain't it the truth!

Bill D, thanks for the pen - I love it! I wish I could have bought a pile of your work. Wish I had someplace to put it as well! (Too many piles of junk around here.)

Jeri - what ya do is rake up all the leaves into a big pile right next to the front door. Then lie down in it this evening and cover yourself completely. Then when the greedy candy snatchers get just to the front door, you just sit up giving your best zombie moan. Mebbe scaring the bejeezus out of a few of 'em will help banish your funk.

crafts! Wood!..middle of the craft show season, and so far, Ferrara & I are doing ok. We took some to the Getaway, due to years of unrelenting pressure..*grin*, and had a wonderful response! What a treat to just set up a table, go away and sing, and have people hunt you down to complement you on your work..or even buy it!

Another 5 weeks and things will be back to relative sanity again.

Here's last weekend at a high school in Virginia

3 pics of Bill & Rita surrounded by our stuff ..(the pics ARE big, if you click to enlarge them)

Kendall - so what does a "resident entertainer" do? And does the Spirit of Suwanee ever host any of those "Senior Seminar" type things? My parents often head out to one during the winter months - tho' I'm not sure the RV park would survive you and my Dad in the same location.

The deep, dark, post Getaway depression/funk I've been in is finally starting to lift, I hope. All that warmth and music and then, suddenly, nothing. Oy - judging by my perception of isolation, and the fact that I'm just being downright weird these days, I guess I'm the only one who felt it. Anyway, I begin to rise from the drowning-pool of self pity at having to exist in the Real World only to realise I have to plant the stupid narcissuseses.. narcissi... bulbs, I have to rake the stupid lawn, and screaming hordes of of greedy, candy-snatching children, bussed in by their parents from who-knows-where will be loosed upon the neighborhood tonight. I'm buggering off to the house of sympathetic friends. I shall try to be of sunny disposition. Wish me luck...well, wish my friends luck. ;-)

Ahem...I feel better now.

Finally have made new improved updated tune list. Sorted by key, and by weekly session group. Sure makes practicing alot easier. One of those picayune things that are done, and really am glad to have it nigh! ;)

I like the idea here. Right now I'm entered in a costume contest at work - dressed like a pirate. Results will be announced at 2:00 (EST). Got the idea from the pirate jokes thread somebody started the other day.

Sorcha, never realised a movie had been made. I used to love "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Another Roald Dahl book I used to like was "James and the Giant Peach".

It's Halloween and the Oompa Loompa (Kate, age 16) is off to school. She is just too funny. I busted my butt to get her costume to look right. She is an Oompa Loompa from the movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".

The Possum on the Porch is back; sat there until well after daylight driving the dogs nuts. We are dog sitting again this week--2 extra Corgis. 4 Corgis!! I am crazy!

Made up meat filling for tamales; will try to get them finished today--who knows with all the "help" I have......Have a G'day, now, all.

The Spirit of the Suwannee, an RV resort in Florida wants me back this winter as resident entertainer. So, I'm making up a tentative itinerary to visit some of the Mudcatters on the way.(Those who will have me, and, my dog)

A general purpose chat thread - sounds like something that might work - though people will have to get used to disjointed conversations if it gets popular.

Just went through and updated the "found tune list" - realized I hadn't transferred a bunch that were posted back in may - because when I do the updates I search on "sent" as in "sent to Joe" and I had logged these as "posted by"...And there is no way I normally READ that whole file! Also have started back through searching the internet - as it has been many months since I did that for missing tunes - and found two from the list already! three, if you count the fact one is duplicated.

Lin in Kansas sent me a number of URL for sound files that have been added to the list as well; if there should ever be someone out there that can transcribe by ear and would be willing to work on them,(and who has the time) there are a bunch of tunes with the location of sound files attached to "the list" ---

Retirement, and so many things to do with my time that I'm having trouble getting around to ANY of them. Living in a new place, with three different international folk dance groups to go to each week.

Hi Susan!

I had a worldwide document-sharing webconference that actually WORKED today. A first for me!

Most days something good happens. Sometimes it's just a little hard to see.

This is an experiment to try something someone suggested-- a daily non-specific BS thread to just BS. It's also similar to something we've been using in our high-octane ministries discussion, too, where we have a thread running all the time about "What's New and Good Today?"

So, what's new and good today?

Or, what else are you thinking about today?

I'll go first. New and good: Marriage-- it just keeps getting better and better, despite what seems now like so many attempts to screw it up completely!

~Susan
