Subject: its the end of the world as we know it From: GUEST,David in Pontyclun Date: 02 Nov 01 - 03:47 AM Has anybody got any idea where these lyrics come from? (They're sung repeatedly as a "catchy" chorus to a late '80s, early '90s pop(pardon me) song. I know it's not really 'catters stuff, but you could always use an alias to reply, and Michael in Swansea assures me you lot are all right. I can't get it out of my head!(oh no, that's ELO) |
Subject: Lyr Add: IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT From: allie kiwi Date: 02 Nov 01 - 04:15 AM Well there is the really well known REM song 'It's the End of the World as we know it', but I think there is another by Bruce Cockburn, although I could be wrong on that score. IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT R.E.M. That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, don't misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock, speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height, down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower. Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn. Lock him in uniform and book burning, blood letting. Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle, light a motive. Step down, step down. Watch a heel crush, crush. Uh oh, this means no fear - cavalier. Renegade and steer clear! A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine. The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide. Mount St. Edelite. Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, slam, but neck, right? Right. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine... (It's time I had some time alone) ~~~~~~ Allie |

Subject: RE: Help: its the end of the world as we know it From: Amos Date: 02 Nov 01 - 01:45 PM Mrrzzy: Searching the web reveals that this phrase is massively popular for apocalyptic visions ranging from the end of fashion trends to the closing of web sites to the doom of the planet. Obviously apocalyptic thinking has been going on since the first Neanderthal had the crapola scared out of him by a volcano going off. In our age, though, you can blame it on Pat Robertson who clearly identifies when the world will end on this page. The Old and new Testament stuff he cites just further supports my assertion that people have been alarming about that the sky is falling, the world ending, and cataclysm upon us since God was in kneepants. Seriously, Pat Robertson aside, I think this is a mindset that goes back to the earliest roots of fear in the world. Unfortunately there is no easy way to trace the particular phrase to its roots without a few days of hard work, which i fear I cannot spare! A. |
Subject: RE: Help: its the end of the world as we know it From: JenEllen Date: 02 Nov 01 - 01:52 PM Wow, "Tales from the Uptown Lounge". dating myself, I know, but way back in the day (the 80s), a band member's brother was on the UGA debate team, and they debated with Emory U. The resulting recording of the debate was ridiculous enough to inspire a song.

Subject: RE: Help: its the end of the world as we know it From: Little Hawk Date: 03 Nov 01 - 12:31 AM Amos - I think the idea has always been popular because, in a sense, every mortal ego anticipates the world ending with its own demise...certainly the world as that ego knows it, anyway. Thus an apocalypse is as certain as mortality itself, from the individual perspective. The ego is also offended by the notion that despite its own passing everyone else is likely to carry on as usual...thus the idea of a world-ending cataclysm where EVERYBODY checks out en masse becomes quite appealing from the ego's point of view. It's more egalitarian that way! This view is not, however, shared by those who wish for a good future for their children... - LH |
