Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: Jeri Date: 02 Nov 01 - 10:45 PM Blackcatter, sounds like there's enough of us to form a committee. No biological family here, and no relationship, but the times I've been invited to friends' houses have all been wonderful. I've also spent more than a few Christmases alone, watching "It's a Wonderful Life" on TV...over and over and over... By the way, thank you, oh my 'youknowwhat', for posting. I really appreciate it! (Was beginning to think I had a bad case of virtual cooties.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: GUEST,SS for Gervase! Date: 03 Nov 01 - 11:37 AM Oh, I have found the perfect Christmas present. It's a previously unknown series written by James Joyce. The first volume is on the history of Irish cooking. The next is his own take on the Book Of Kells. And the last volumes include recently uncovered recordings on CD of him singing Engish folk, baroque & classical, and some pre-20th Century opera. The volumes are color coordinated in dark colors including green, blue, and maroon. Interested? Signed, odds'n'sods |

Hmmmm... now how would you know where to send them to me? ...unless you were my...??? Seems as if my SS is in the UK, as you are... Hm hm hmmmmmmmm... Jeri and Blackcatter: Yeah, a committee sounds good, though I'm guessing that we live too far from one another to have a Christmas Day committee meeting; am I right? I do have a little bit of family, but they seem less and less interested in holiday get-togethers, particularly since my mother's passing. Perhaps I'll try to rally them a bit this year. Sure wish Blackcatter's SS would check in! Sharon P.S. – Okay, Jeri, "It's a Wonderful Life" pop quiz time: What was Mary's maiden name? (No fair peeking at the video or the trivia book!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: Blackcatter Date: 04 Nov 01 - 09:34 PM Hi Sharon, My SS did check in earlier - near the end of Part III. I guess finding a bunch of friends to hang out with on Christmas who don't have family would be great. I've got a lot of wonderful friends, but they all have family so it's tough for me. I struggle with it but it's really the only time of year I feel that way. (though Valentines Day has similar issues) Anyway, I was thinking of doing myself up as Santa this year for my church's Holiday celebration, but I don't know if that will make me feel any better. Everyone out there who has family, please remember that you have something that some of us don't have. Celebrate that and be understanding of friends who are alone during the holidays - sometimes it is easier for to be alone that to be in the warm presence of a family that is not our own. I'm still really looking forward to my SS present - It'll be one of 4 I receive, most likely. pax yall |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: SharonA Date: 05 Nov 01 - 10:21 AM Blackcatter: Jeez, how did I miss your SS's post (with big, bold letters)? Sorry; I'll wake up soon. I'm glad to see your SS is alive, if not very talkative! Your message about family celebrations is well taken; although my family's get-togethers can be more lukewarm than warm, they still provide a necessary connection. On the other hand, holiday gatherings certainly do not need to be restricted to get-togethers that exclude non-family members. I think that we, in the US especially, should do more visiting with friends, and truly welcoming them into our celebrations without making them feel awkward or out of place. Of course, we "invited friends" have a responsibility, too: to accept hospitality, and to get into the spirit of our host's festivities (in other words, enjoy ourselves!). Jeri: I was hoping you knew the answer to my trivia question... 'cause I don't either! Anybody else out there know? (The question was: In the movie "It's a Wonderful Life", what was Mary Bailey's maiden name?) To my Secret Santa: Ooh, yeah, bring on the rubber gloves! Then I'll be able to open my mail with confidence! ;^) In fact, I think I feel a song coming on... (To the tune of "Rubber Ducky" from Sesame Street) Rubber glovey, you're the one You make work time so much fun Rubber glovey, I'm aw-ful-ly fond of yooooou... Rubber glovey, boy oh boy! When I rub a dish with Joy*, Rubber glovey, you're my fingers' best friend, it's true! Oh, ev'ry day when I Make my way to the sink-y I find a little fella who's Either yella or pink-y (rink-a-dink-a-dinky!) Rubber glovey, I'll be cry'n' Till my Santa makes you mine! Rubber glovey I'd like to put on, luv – Rubber glovey, I'm aw-ful-ly fond of you! (*Joy=brand of dishwashing detergent) Wheeeee, I can hardly wait till Christmas!!! Sharon |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: GUEST,Dai, who stands alone, yet has no cookie. Date: 05 Nov 01 - 10:37 AM My Santa, my dear. Your teasing is most comely. Pray, why do you hide your lovely visage behind your fan, so? To give something enduring, and ephemeral, is a sweet thing indeed... My anticipation is barely contained, it is fairly straining at its bit, and I can only pray that I can keep it from making a mess of my keyboard... |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: GUEST, JenEllen's SS Date: 05 Nov 01 - 11:24 AM Okay, so you're cooking impaired and have suffered the sudden loss of several kitchen appliances (out of self defense). Are you the sort of person (like me) who considers a chain saw to be a kitchen implement? One of my secret sources of information has been ignoring me lately and my brilliant idea of the other night came to naught in the cold light of day. I need some hints and ideas or you'll end up with a bottle the best preserved lime juice in the world (that is, the best in the world -- my opinion -- lime juice, preserved variety for making margaritas) and my own personal purist's classic recipe for margaritas -- no blender needed. In other words, "Help!" |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: JenEllen Date: 06 Nov 01 - 03:16 PM Dear Santa; If the chainsaw is in the kitchen, by all means use it. Actually I cook very well, but I also can curse a blue streak, so that has virtually eliminated any chance of my very own PBS cooking show career. Secret sources of information? That is just short of terrifying. The things some people know... Well, whatever they won't tell you, I will. What do you need hints and ideas about?

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: GUEST, JenEllen's SS Date: 06 Nov 01 - 03:43 PM And are SS special margaritas too tame? (Hey, I've got a source for the best lime juice around!) What sort of knick knacks litter your shelves? I, too, live just south (just barely, I think) of the North Pole. And my secret sources are ignoring my pleas for assistance despite promises made! I could always get you something local or I could be boring (well, less imaginative!) and get you a CD (though the CD wouldn't be boring and would also have a local connection). Maybe I'm just uninspired because my brilliant idea didn't pan out. (I'll tell you the story at a later date.) Do you play an instrument? (Fiddle, if I recall correctly . . .) Are your tastes conservative? Outrageous? Something in between? (Hmmm . . . chainsaws in the kitchen don't discourage you.) Wildlife / natural history oriented? Mythical creatures? Historical interests? Oceans, mountains, desserts (is this multiple choice, or what?). Practical? Romantic? The list goes on. |
Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: GUEST,katlaughing's Secret Santa Date: 06 Nov 01 - 04:28 PM Ah, kat, you are being as impatient as a kitten. You're not forgotten. This logout and login is a pain, though, so this may be all the hints you get. Heeheehee. |

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa HINTS THREAD PART FOUR From: GUEST,Robin2's Sectret Santa Date: 06 Nov 01 - 07:40 PM Your gift has been assembled. It will soon be whisked to your house by a team of flying reindeer, if they can get off the ground. They've been in N.California where I live in the off-holiday season and have been hanging out in wine country for a little too long, I fear. Rudolph has become such a snob because his nose is the exact shade of a certain late-harvest Merlot. They went on a tasting tour on Saturday (lord knows how they all fit in the limousine) and have not yet recovered from their hangovers. I'm glad I couldn't go (despite my aged appearance, I'm not 21 yet). Anyway, gift sent soon, and a card enclosing my identity and maybe a picture will be sent the following day. I hope you like it! |
