Subject: No BS: The Mudcat Is Shutting Down From: Max Date: 02 Nov 01 - 12:28 PM Get your attention? Good. I am very displeased with our community of late. The GUESTS have a tone I'm all too familiar with... I am going through a divorce you know. The members are disappointing me too. Please everyone, show tolerance and patience, love and empathy. I strive to have no negative emotions in my life, especially hate. I don't even allow my daughter use the word, and can't remember the last time I have, even casually about a food I don't like. I must admit that something that I am so closely associated with (Mudcat) contains so much of it. There will be outages today and tomorrow, not sure for how long or exactly when. Mudcat Central is depressingly empty except for the servers and the tables that hold them. I will move some servers today and some tomorrow. Because of a time crunch I won't be able to test as much as I would have liked, so I am not sure how smoothly she'll go. I've been through a lot in the last couple of weeks, taking extraordinary efforts to keep Mudcat alive. I have shown tolerance and respect for it and all of you. Do me the same and help me clean up our imaginary town here at Mudcat, and fill it with love. My life changes come Monday. Another chapter down, many more to go. When life deals me like this, I take it as an opportunity to make changes for the better. Perhaps you can all join me this time. Remember, this site is about Traditional Music. It is for musicians, educators and appreciaters to share stories, techniques, songs, etc. It also facilitates our real friendships and get-togethers. I've witnessed incredible acts of kindness, I've seen people cross an ocean and nary spend a dime besides the plane ticket, and I've met some of the finest people in the world, from 4 continents. These are our core principles and should be protected. If the spite in this forum inhibits the quest for knowledge or a real meeting of folks, we are defeating the very purpose. I do not want another thread of Thank You's like always happens when I post one of these updates and pep talks. Don't tell me, show me. I don't need cheered up, I don't need to feel appreciated, I need to look upon the Mudcat pages and see beautiful people being happy, because that is why I do this. It's not my work that makes this such a great place (though it don't hurt), its all of you. I feel like I am rising to a challenge right now, with this move, and now I challenge you. We are a group, a whole. We are together because we share at least some common interest. We may not all see eye to eye on everything, but the Mudcat IS the sum of all its parts. I challenge you to make it work. Get your attention? Good. |

What you do here is without parallel and unique. We will suffer the outages gladly for the future opportunities to share that you provide. Keep up the good work. I am sorry to learn of your divorce. As a veteran I can say two things are paramount. First never let them make you a part time dad. The shrinks that say stability, living primarily in one house, are wrong. The child needs both parents equally, not 'stability' at the cost of love. Second, don't bend over backwards. I just want to point out one thing: Mudcat is like the proverbial elephant being examined by the blind men. You know the story: One touches the elephant's ear and says, "An elephant is like a fan." One touches its tail and says, "An elephant is like a rope." One touches its trunk and says, "An elephant is like a snake." And so on. Mudcat, I've found, is the same in this respect. If you look at the music threads, you get one impression of what Mudcat is like, and if you look at the non-music discussions, you get a totally different one. I can't even count all the subcategories, each of which has its own flavor. Yes, I've seen hateful things at Mudcat, but I've also noticed that, at the same time hateful things are being said in one corner, there is another corner where things are serene, and people are graciously helping one another find lyrics, and so on. I've gotten so I can pretty well tell by a thread title whether reading it is going to raise my blood pressure, so I ignore those. I've learned by experience that wading into those disputes and telling people to be rational, or be kind, just doesn't work. I guess they have to learn for themselves that rancorous arguments just aren't worth the effort. Or maybe there are some people for whom it IS worth the effort. Although I don't understand what their payoff is, who am I to judge? If Mudcat goes away, what I will mainly miss is the hoard of song lyrics that exists in old threads. My major interest lately has been in finding and harvesting them for DigiTrad, which I hope will go on even if Mudcat doesn't. I've been working feverishly at this, because there seems to be a Malthusian principle at work. The archive of old threads seems to be growing at an exponential rate, and there's bound to come a day when you will decide it's not worth the effort to maintain it. I want to harvest as many good songs as possible before that happens. I don't want to brag, but you might try asking Susan of DT how many songs I have sent her. Then you will know how serious I am about this. And then there's Joe Offer. I don't want to even guess how much he has contributed. He and I are working on different ends of the elephant, so I hardly ever see what he's doing! |

Despite the flamers and trollers and BSers, the Mudcat community provides something very, very worthwhile for an awful lot of people and has become an indespensible part of their lives. You can be proud of it. And the important thing is, and always will be, that it is a community - with all the the strengths and weaknesses that brings with it. Yes, it has been harder of late to find music interests amongst all the other stuff that has been raised - but the interests are still there, and Mudcat continues to provide an incredible service to musicians of all standards. I hardly even count myself in the musician category, given my meagre standards, but I have used Mudcat almost daily since I first encountered it and it has given me great pleasure as well as useful information. Occasionally, I have been able to give a little back, and am grateful for the opportunity to do so. About the only thing I think I can do directly to address Max's challenge to 'show him' is to make sure I keep the focus on music. As it is, I very rarely post to non-music threads, but at least for the next month or two, if Max is willing to keep things going, other threads will be out-of-bounds for me. As for the happiness angle, I have always found that the people who I have spoken to through Mudcat have guaranteed that. |

The extraordinary things in this community are a direct result of your work and your dedication. That you have shown such patience and forbearance is a continuous miracle, and you have every right to have it wear thin, especially with what you are going through. I would simply say that it is the existence of Mudcat itself that makes me happy, not the content on a particular day (and the crummy parts are very minor). You created this sky: the fact that there are clouds across it occasionally does not hide the fact that it is the sky that matters. It is the idea, the possibility of community that makes the Mudcat. It falters, and silts up on occasion, but it is still the best, and it is your doing. Sorry if you don't want to be complimented, but I can't help it. yours, Peter T. |

About all I can offer are my good wishes. Like many who make their living in this biznes, the money is often pretty short. I guess that's life in the slow lane. ;-) As for the personal news, Max, well, I've been there too. Still dealing with it even after twenty-six years this Christmas. If there is a bright side to divorce, it is this: just more grist for the song mill. It is the oldest story in the world, and it will be told over and over again as long as we keep breaking each other's hearts. Bummer. |

Sure there is the BS and the flamers. But much of the BS helps people stay connected. And the flame wars, I try not to waste my time on them, though I am occasionally drawn in. Overall, there is much more good than bad here. Lots of wonderful folks, willing to help with any manner of musical,(or personal) issues. As a fairly amateur musician, I have less to add than many. But it really does my heart good when I am able to contribute in any small way. I really hope that is not taken from me. DougR- I too have a real life. And the Mudcat is an important part of it. I Have bored everyone for nearly a year now, with many threads about the threat to sessions here in the UK.
With the help of Max's vision, his creation and many Mudcatters, I honestly beleive that a sensible outcome may be now possible, mainly because of both of these factors. Let's just make sure the positive always will outweigh the negative here.

Anyhow, seems like most of you understand, some of you don't and I'm not sure Clinton even read the damn post. Like I said, I'm fine. The comment about the divorce was simple in comparison of spite between my ex and GUESTS. There is a Mudcat clique, or core group, if you will. I call you the 1%ers. Half of my design efforts, functions, doodads, are for the 1%ers, half are for the other 99%. The 1%ers are so because they're here a lot, and they post a lot, not for any other reason than that. I ask more of you. I ask the 1%ers to simply represent us, the Mudcat, with pride, patience, empathy, tolerance, and love. I've seen some testiness lately. Don't you think I get pissed off? See me do much about it in the forum? You are the 1%, which means you are not the majority by far. Try not to forget about the other 99%. Don't forget, these are not just words on a screen, there are real people on the other side. People with lives, children, problems, careers, illnesses, weaknesses, real people just like me and just like you. I think sometimes we forget that. I have no problem with BS threads. In fact, there is a lot of use on this site for some BS. We have a large group of very knowledgeable people on many fronts. I'm gonna post a thread soon about recommendations for what to do about my car that is very broke. Figure someone will be able to help me. And that is a great thing because you are not random people, you are my friends and associates, I know you. There is certainly no other community that I am a part of which I could say that about. Now to the real point of this thread, updates about the move. Ragtime is now in my dining room (The New Mudcat Studios) up and running. Seems to be working fine (try it). It was the initial test for the whole move which should begin around 2pm EST tomorrow (Saturday). If you experience trouble tomorrow, just be patient and be assured my long-Robert-Johnson-like-fingers are going as fast as they can to get back up. First we carry all the machines here (I got 3 helpers and a pickup truck for that) then we scramble to change all the IP #'s and DNS records and web servers etc. Also, because of the nature of the Net, it may take a bit of time for the changes to propagate throughout the Net, so not everyone will have the same problems at the same time. The only uncertainty at this point, thanks to the Ragtime success, is if I'll blow fuses with 10 computers in the dining room. It has me worried, but that's the last hurdle in many that we've already overcome. Whew. |

The kitchen has a 20 amp limit so you might check this out. Usually the kitchen on older places has two circuits of 20 amps each. Newer places have more. His efforts have provided me a forum to come and be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian, something that it is not usually possible for someone employed in corporate America. I would also like to thank him for finally acknowledging the existence of the Mudcat Inner Clique. Sure makes all the assholes who get up in arms whenever the clique gets mentioned look like dorks. |
