Subject: Do you ever feel like a teenager?
From: GUEST,Old enough to know better
Date: 04 Nov 01 - 06:11 PM

A couple of days ago, I got an email from Dick Gaughan.

It was pretty inconsequential, but it made my day.

A couple of months back I chatted to Martin Carthy, again pretty inconsequential stuff.

Meeting your heroes when your 12, is and should remain a special thing.

But still getting excited by it when you're 54???

Should I be put in some sort of home?

But it's not

so I won't

Got to meet and play on the same stage with Arlo Guthrie last year.....stood there like a teenager, scuffling my feet, and trying to think of something clever to say.

He by the way is a great guy, who acts like he's never met a stranger.

I'm not sure, since it was a long time ago.But I thini when I was a teenager I was a lot more world weary and cynical about things like that.

Ah, but I was older then - I'm so much younger now.

I was a miserable teenager. I never seemed to fit in anywhere. Well, sometimes I feel like that. Sometimes I also feel like the obnoxious 10 year old I was, and that's more fun. (For me, anyhow.)

I've said really stupid things to both Gaughan and Carthy, and yeah - I felt like the teenager both times. I need a T-shirt that says "I'm with stupid," with an arrow pointing up. It'd give people a warning.

Bat Goddess once made coffee come out of Gaughan's nose.

Life sucked as a teen.

Frankly, while I would never have done it, I could totally sympathise with those teens who do the school shootings...

Yeah, the teenage years were a miserable time for me too. Mostly because of the other teenagers...and the old unrequited love problems. I expected things would get better when adulthood came around, and they did, but the weird thing is I still really don't feel like a fully established adult inside even after 5 decades of existence.

It doesn't magically happen when you turn 21. If it ever happens...

As far as meeting my heroes, I've gotten pretty good at handling that and not acting silly. Had a couple of good conversations with Buffy Sainte-Marie, who is the biggest hero I ever had, I guess. Haven't met Dylan, and probably never will, cos I'm not around the big city much anymore.

Yea, I do. The body simply does not recognize that it is not 19 anymore......

I was a normal, screwed up teen until I met Stuart Mossman.......then I was a REALLY screwed up teen. Stu introduced my dad to weed.......and dad never knew I knew weed too. Stu also introduced me to "fiddle" opposed to "violin".............for that I will be forever thankful.

But in my head, I am still a teenager......I hope I am never "old".

Thanks to Stu, I also met David Carradine.....he is somewhat of an arrogant ass in real life. I also met Don Crawford ( I am sure very few people know who he is) who was a real gentleman.

I am still a teen ager at heart.

Damn right I do! Other than starting to lose all my faculties.....mentally I feel like the fifteen year old I WANTED TO BE!

Amergin. I can relate. Pete sent me one of those wonderful "Four Horsemen" postcards, saying that a review I'd done of his book "Where have All the Flowers gone" was "The best review I've ever gotten in my 75 years"!! I was stunned, and stood their crying (at age 48). Heather must have thought I'd gone nuts!

Three weeks ago I met Kendall Morse. I felt like a kid. I have a lot of admiration for the guy.

I guess I've met most of my musical heroes and I've met my two modern philosophical heroes, Quentin Crisp, and Jim Bouton, and would have liked to have at least said "thanks" to Al Stohlman (the father of modern leather carving) but he passed on before I had a chance. Yup, each new day has possibilities.

Rick

some kid said in presence not too long ago that he dreaded turning 20...my response was that I liked turning 20....so well that I did it 3 times!

I didn't much like my teen years, but I have finally found some things to be fascinated and enthusiastic about...now if my body will cooperate until I turn 20 for the 4th time, I may DO them well! *grin*

LtS always tells me that " I have the body of a 17 year old" but that" you should give it back before you get it wrinkled, and I met several of my heroes lately at the G*****y (I am banned from mentioning the word..) THE Jeri, THE Jed, THE Big Mick, THE Rick, THE Sandy and Caroline, THE Kendall) THE Max And Many ,many more, and felt a terrible fraud, singing in such distinguished company...and just wanted to scuff my toes and shuffle and hide.

There must be something wrong with me; I enjoyed my teenage years!

;-)

I can't think of any meeting famous people stories, but I did have Doc Watson dedicate a song to my son on his 17th birthday, while Doc was doing a show at Poor Davids Pub in Dallas.

I met the fiddler/singer from Altan backstage at the North Texas Irish Festival and fell in love with her for a few minutes. I guess that's a teenage reaction ... does that count?

Jed, you were probably one of those disgustingly popular kids.

Micca...ahem...THE Micca - I always feel like a fraud, too. THEY'RE the good ones, and are just being kind to me, tolerating me, blah, blah, blah. Trust me - you belonged as much as anyone else.

Come to think of it, I spent a lot of my teenage years hoping my pretense at being 'normal' was working, and hoping no one would see through it to the the real me. As I got older, I quit worrying about fitting in, although I could do with at least pretending to be somewhat civilised occasionally.

I didn't like my teens, so, I'm reliving them! Well, minus the zits and "growing pains" I now have ageing pains instead. Rick, as I was reading the posts, I thought, I sure as hell acted like a teenager at the Getaway. Staying up all friggin' night. One big difference, this time I was enjoying the company of BOTH sexes. And, picking with Rick would make anyone young again. Jeri, if you dont fit in, I dont know anyone who does.

I just made it through my teens a couple of years ago. Everything after 18 was fine, but I don't think I'd want to relive those years. Too much change and not many places to go when your under 21 (which I no longer am!) in America. As for meeting my idols, I already met David Russell. I'll have an opportunity to meet him again when stops in Seattle in April for to play a concert (I already have my ticket). I haven't had the opportunity to meet Gary Payton or Nate MacMillian (both childhood basketball idols of mine) though. I also plan on making a visit to the Full Gosple Tabernacle to visit Al Green some day.

I enjoyed the hell out of my teen years. It was easy to do, though, because I was a hippy attending an amazing Summerhill sort of experimental high school. I earned part of a gym credit backpacking, mountain climbing, and canoe camping in wilderness areas in the northeastern US and parts of Canada with my friends. What's not to love? In fact, the Mudcat reminds me a lof of my high school. Maybe that's why I glommed onto it so tightly.

So I guess, in a way, I'm reliving my teenage right now here in the Mudcat.

Re: meeting heroes... I don't generally tend to have heroes, but Paul Oorts became a hero for me the day he showed up at O'Hurley's jam with his accordion, and forever changed the course of my life by inspiring me to want to learn to play the box.

I had okay teenage years, but I'm having more fun now. I looked over at Himself the other day, splitting hangover making my brain feel all mushy, and I had to grin and tell him, "You know, I just can't believe we're so old already."

Mid-thirties seemed ancient when I was 18.

By the way, Jed still ACTS like a teenager....albeit a MATURE teenager.

Every time I fall in love!
My teens were pretty damned good, really - I got to misbehave on an industrial scale, I didn't get caught, and then I met the love of my life who became the mother of my children. They really were the best of times and the worst of times.
It's what I did after my teens that is best left veiled.

When I replied "No" previously, I was referring strictly to the question asked.

I, too, enjoyed my teen years.

I'm not quite sure when the thought turned to meeting heros in the thread, but some of those would include: Eddy Arnold, Jack Benny, Andre Segovia, Rise Stevens, Morton Gould, Leopold Stowkowski, Robert Shaw, Henry Mancini, Isaac Stern, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, James Earl Jones, Alan Lomax, Robert Wise, Marian Anderson, Agnes DeMille, Billy Edd Wheeler, in no particular order.

Ah yes, the teenaged years. YECH!
But some of the feelings don't go away. Like the time I met Bill Staines. All day long I kept looking for the opportunity when he wasn't occupied with something or another, to say hello, and shake his hand. I finally found that opportunity, and had the brass to butt into a conversation he was having with some one else. He was gracious about that, however. We chatted a bit, and I told him in true teenaged idol worshiping fashion how much I liked his work, and I hoped I'd be able to write good songs someday. His reply? "Gee, my biggest fear is I'll run out of things to say."

I had the chance to be in a fiddle workshop with the likes of Laurie Lewis and Kenny Kosek at a bluegrass festival once. Yeah, I was a bit intimidated. Felt real insecure about that. So I thought I'd play to my strengths, and sing while I fiddled, that is. And promptly forgot the third verse to "The Miller's Will." Ye gods!
Jim
