Subject: Who sings this song
From: GUEST,teetee

I heard this song on a tape someone recorded a while back. I like the song and know the lyrics but I don't know who sings it. I believe it is a blues song from the 60-70's era. Some of the lyrics are:
" It ain't no use for you to cry
You might as well dry your eyes
You done me wrong, now you wanna come back home
But it ain't no use
There was a time when you were my pride and joy
Woman I loved you like a child loves his toy
You done me wrong, now you wanna come back home
But it's too late, it's just too late
I wanted you, you wanted someone else
You went away and left me, left me all by my
left me all by myself)
No need to cry for your mistakes
I want you to know that it's just too late
You done me wrong now you wanna come back home
but it's too late"
In the beginning of the song there's a couple of minutes of blues-type music playing and a man talking to a woman about fixing her a drink. Then his old girlfriend knocks on the door named Ethel trying to beg him to come back but he tells her it's too late, he's got somebody else.

I hope someone knows who sings this song because I really love the song and want to find other music by this person.

Take a look around this Google Search page. Several sites give lyrics and chords credited to Clark/McGuinn whoever they are........I'll do some more looking.

Apparently, McGuinn sang with The Byrds..

Hmmm, you may be right Sorcha.

A convoluted search of mine suggested that the original version was done by The Funky Meters.

The Grateful Dead have done a version too.

This page gives the following information, which clears things up a bit:

On the "Live At The Keystone" recording, the song is credited to Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn, but this must be a mistake: the song sung by Garcia bears almost no relation to the Byrds' song of the same name (thanks to Eric Levy for pointing this out). It is not entirely clear where Garcia got the song from. It sounds as if it is a descendant of the blues standard "Ain't No Use" (recorded by Sarah Vaughn, Charles Brown, Big Maybelle etc). But it has gone through some significant changes from the original lyrics.

A correction.

It wasn't recorded by The Grateful Dead, but by a side project that Jerry Garcia did with Merl Saunders, and I think that's the version you probably want.

Amazon.com has an entry for the album in question: Live at Keystone, Vol. 1

It includes a real audio sample of "It's No Use" a little way down the page.

Is this the right one?

Ed

This song comes from the late 60s/early 70s. Back then there were Doors named Jim, Ray and John also.

Well, for the record, here is the Byrds song, from the Mr. Tambourine Man album:
Source: http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/introjs.htm?/~acsa/songfile/ITSNOUSE.HTM

IT'S NO USE
(Clark/McGuinn)

It's no use use saying you're gonna stay
If you don't want to be all mine
I haven't got room for somebody
Who's gonna hurt me all the time
Somebody who couldn't see
All the love I was trying to give
It's no use saying you're gonna stay
If you don't want our love to live

It's no use keeping you around
If you don't want me all the way
There's somebody new who can found
And I'll find her someday
And she will be everything
All the love she has she'll want to give
It's no use saying you're gonna stay
If you don't want our love to live

Oh I should be good to you but I can't
'Cause I was really true to you but you only hurt me more

It's no use use saying your gonna stay
Af you don't want to be all mine
I haven't got room for somebody
Who's gonna hurt me all the time
Somebody who couldn't see
All the love I was trying to give
It's no use saying you're gonna stay
If you don't want our love to live

From: Joe Offer

And here's the song from the Jerry Garcia recording:

AIN'T NO USE
(songwriter Kirkland, Wyche?)

It ain't no use
For you to cry
Woman you better
Dry your eye
You done me wrong
Now you want to come back
But it's no use
It's no use

There was a time
You was my pride and joy
The woman I loved
Like a child loves his toy
You hurt me so
I want you to know
It's no use
It's no use

I wanted you
You wanted someone else
You went away and left me
Left me all by my
Left me all by my
Left me all by myself

Now it's your turn to cry
Pay for your mistakes
Woman I love you
But it's too late
You hurt me so
I want you to know
It's too late
It's too late

[mumbled lines on Keystone recording]
Woman I love you
But it's too late
You hurt me so
I want you know
It's too late
It's too late

There was a time
You was my pride and joy
The woman I loved
Like a child loves his toy
You hurt me so
I want you to know
It's too late
It's too late

I wanted you
You wanted someone else
You went away and left me
Left me all by my
Left me all by my
Left me all by myself

Now it's your turn to cry
Pay for your mistakes
Woman I love you
But it's too late
You done me wrong
You want to come back home
But it's too late
It's too late

You done me wrong
You want to come back home
But it's too late

ALL WRONG! I know the exact song he talking about but I'm in the same boat. I can't remember the singer and by the way it was recorded as a bluesy type record.

There's a torchy-sounding song titled "Ain't No Use." It was recorded by Nina Simone and Sara Vaughan. There's one by Stevie Wonder titled "It Ain't No use." I listened to both, and they're not the song requested in the first post.
Good songs, though.

The Garcia-Saunders recordings at the Keystone were from the 1970s when reggae was popular.

Their song "It's No Use" sounds Carribean. It seems to date to about 1965 from a group called The Mytals. They are considered hugely influential in the evolution of reggae, which was even the basis of the sound of some White groups like The Police.

If it is the same song, the credits go to: Gordon, Hibbert, McCarthy. At the time, this sound was called "ska".

It's No Use

The Maytals

writing credit: Gordon, Hibbert, McCarthy

It's no use you walking away from me
when you know that I really really love you true
I keep seeing you even when I'm sleeping
Now I know if you don't come to me I won't know what to do
This is all I gotta say
There is nothing (nothing will go wrong with you)
Nothing (nothing can happen to you)
Let me hold you
I want to squeeze you 'cause I love you
And nothing will go wrong with you
No no no no no no my darling
It's no use, you've been trying to hide away from me baby
'Cause I know deep down in my heart
One day you will walk right back to me
This is all I gotta say
I gotta say kiss me, I gotta say hold me
I gotta say squeeze me with all your might
And I'll say darling, kiss me my baby, let love begin
And this is all I gotta say
There is nothing (nothing will go wrong with you)
If you only come to me there is nothing (nothing can happen to you)
Let me hold you, I want to squeeze you
'Cause I love you nothing will go wrong with you
No no no no no baby baby
I love you baby
I really need you
Why won't you come home?

What do you mean, "same song"? There are obviously three distinct sets of lyrics in this thread.
