Hot Tuna does a version of "True Religion"-- it sounds like an old blues song but unfortunately it's from an old tape that lists no song writing credits. Help! If someone could email me the lyrics I would be SO appreciative!!! Thanks in advance, Meg gibralto@walrus.com music page http://www.walrus.com/~gibralto/music.html

Hot Tuna's source is Rev. Gary Davis. Don't know if he wrote it. Don't have easy access to the lyrics.

This is a soul song I created years ago. I am giving it to you! The big bang set the stars in their proportion;the big bang set them in their perpetual motion;it's gonna be flowin',flowin', flowin', ain't never gonna stop;creation keeps goin',goin',going' on,galaxies spinning like a top;the singularity is speaking out to me;it's askin' for peace and brotherhood,for everything on earth that's good;make an effort, try;look up in the sky;gravity and space holds this world in place...The big bang sent the stars off on their mission;stars are in motion,ever changin'their position;galaxies are receeding at the speed of light;the quasi-stellar's gleaming with energy so bright;the farther you look,the more you find,a view that takes you back in time,ye-ah!Make an effort,try..look up in the sky,make an effort,try gravity and space holds our world in place...yes, it HOLDS our world in its place,ye-aah,yes it holds our world in its pla-a-ace.(hint:Mariah Carey would do the job nicely!!)

True Religion (not the one Lindsay wrote) is a fine old Negro gospel piece: Josh White did it, as did Dan Smith and Gary Davis. It's to the same tune as Motherless Children, with which it often shares verses.

It (geerally) starts:

Mama, take the pillow from under my head
Hallelu, hallelu
Mama take the pillow from under my head
Hallelu hallelu
Mama take the pillow from under my head
Jesus gonna make up my dyin' bed
Then you need that true religion,
Hallelu

I'll try to dig up the rest.

An absolutely electrifying performance of (a version of ) "True Religion" Can be found on the Erik Darling album of the same name. Sadly I lent it and lost it. If a Mudcatter has it and could make me a tape I'd plotz! (if I were Jewish) I don't ask for much, folks, but this album I'd kill for!

I think I've got it, Rick. I'll give a look around tomorrow. I was starting to feel pretty sorry for Meg who started this thread. I'm pretty sure I can find the album, I just don't remember if that's one of the tracks that still plays. (BSEG) It somehow was left someplace warm one time too many, but I loved it so much, I couldn't bear to throw it out.
Blessings,
Barbara

Barbara, a bit of temporary insomnia (or is it insanity_ got me out of bed, and now my excitement level is rising! Hope it's playable. Gotta get back to sleep. I've got 11 students coming, and some of them think 10 am is an acceptable time to learn music! Gotta do something about that. Thanks.
Rick

Gosh, Rick, I'm sorry. I went hunting and after much search (achoo!), found my Eric Darling records. And the one with the incredible waffle in it is Train Time, not True Religion.
All of True Religion plays just fine. I apparently found a copy at a sale at some point, because this one doesn't look like it's ever been played, and I know I wore the grooves off the one I had.
I'm taping it now. So send me your box tops and an SASE, or just a snail addy, and we'll see if we can keep you off the streets for a little longer.
I also have a Rooftop Singers Album. Any of the rest interest you?
Blessings,
Barbara
I might be willing to trade for one of your CDs. hint, hint.

Subject: Lyr Add: TRUE RELIGION (Erik Darling)
From: Barbara

Here's the way Erik Darling sings it on the eponymously named album (is that the right word?):

TRUE RELIGION
Who's gonna make up my dying bed
When I die;
Who's gonna make up my dying bed
When I die;
Who's gonna make up my dying bed,
Who's gonna make up my dying bed,
Who's gonna make up my dying bed
When I die?

Who's gonna take my soul to heaven
When I die;
Who's gonna take my soul to heaven
When I die?
Who's gonna make up my dying bed,
Who's gonna take my soul to heaven
When I die?

When I get that true religion,
Hallelu;
When I get that true religion,
Hallelu...
When I get that true religion,
True religion will carry me;
When I get that true religion,
Hallelu.
