Subject: Kendall or Jed From: GUEST,Cindy using a computer at the public library Date: 07 Nov 01 - 04:19 PM I've been reading all the wonderful things you guys have been saying about the CDs by Kendall and Jed Marum. I'd love to order both of them right away but my budget can only handle one right now. Maybe in a month or two I can get the other one. So which one should I get first? Kendall or Jed Marum? Please help me decide. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Jeri Date: 07 Nov 01 - 04:48 PM I'd hate to only have $10 to spend on CDs! How about this - you pick one, and I'll buy you the other one. Click to e-mail me your address. Another option: Buy Jed's from Amazon and send Kendall your address. He can send you his CD, and I can send him the money. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Steve in Idaho Date: 07 Nov 01 - 04:59 PM Or buy Jed's from one of the Catters so the extra goes to the Cat? Steve |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Kim C Date: 07 Nov 01 - 05:43 PM Jeri, you are so sweet! I was just going to suggest she flip a coin. ;-) They are both worthy and if I had to decide, I don't know if I could! |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Rick Fielding Date: 07 Nov 01 - 06:02 PM Well Cindy, Kendall's pushin' ninety, I'd get his first or you may never get it autographed! Rick |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Jeri Date: 07 Nov 01 - 06:07 PM I've received quite a few CDs from friends at Mudcat since I've been here. I'm completely serious about this. I think Kendall is where you get Kendall's CDs from, so he'd need to hear from Cindy anyway. Kendall, if you get a request from Cindy, let me know and I'll contact you for the address to send the money to. If you don't want to go with this suggestion, I'd flip a coin. Both CDs are wonderful, but you can read the threads on them to see if one sounds more to your tastes. I, and probably most folks here, don't want to go near anything resembling a "who's better" discussion. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 07 Nov 01 - 06:10 PM Cindy - PM me with your address. I have a spare copy of Kendall's. You can get Jed's from FSGW or Amazon. Don't miss either one. Autographs? What autographs? |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: DougR Date: 07 Nov 01 - 06:55 PM Excellent advice, Rick! Is Kendall JUST 90? DougR |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 07 Nov 01 - 08:34 PM I've made my decision, Jed wins. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 07 Nov 01 - 08:37 PM Remember folks, the Post office dept. is in serious financial trouble, and, I'm wondering if I'm getting all of my mail. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Troll Date: 07 Nov 01 - 08:38 PM Oh no you don't, Kendall. I want a recount. (We're big on those in Florida.) troll |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: DougR Date: 07 Nov 01 - 09:13 PM Hmmm. Is it possible the FBI is checking your mail because of your known socialistic ideas, Kendall my friend? That could be slowing down your mail! :>) DougR |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 07 Nov 01 - 09:38 PM Kendall's Phoebe Snow vs, Jed's Maggie? You have to get them both, Cindy. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 07 Nov 01 - 09:54 PM Doug my boy, we are all socialists in some ways. Consider our highways, our military, our FBI, can you imagine all those things run by private enterprise? For instance, look at the mess in the security business at the airports. A bunch of incompetent, minimum wage people, some of whom are felons. If they were federal agents, they would have to pass a background check, but, no the republicans want them to continue to be minimum wage felons. To hell with safety, gotta worship that bottom line. Sorry about the rant. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Amos Date: 07 Nov 01 - 10:02 PM But neither Jed nor Kendall are felons, as far as we know, in spite of all the gummints best efforts!! Gotta tell ya somethin', ya know woddImean? |

Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: GUEST,Frank Date: 08 Nov 01 - 09:32 AM Kendall and Doug, How about social security, too? There are some who would like to privatize it. Can you imagine what would happen if we did? Would it be run scrupulously? Congratulations on reaching 90, Kendall. You are a very young 90. Frank |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 08 Nov 01 - 09:35 AM Cindy, I sent a PM with instructions. I believe that Mudcat still has CDs for sale, as well - proceeds benefit Mudcat operational costs. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 08 Nov 01 - 09:44 AM 'sides, I have to say that Kendall's recordings are 'must haves' for your collection. Kendall has a rare gift for humor and music - and his recordings capture both beautifully. |

Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Nov 01 - 10:03 PM Well hell....No decision yet? If not Jed or Kendall, I've given you some very attractive alternatives! Okay then, just one more and this one may be the best of the best!!!! How about "Gil Pike and the St. Louis Aquarium Choir Present the Best of Yoko Ono." Spaw |

Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Steve in Idaho Date: 11 Nov 01 - 01:16 AM Well - I received Jed's CD today - played it most of the day. Man Jed - Very nicely done my friend!! I am thrilled with it! I have Kendalls on order - so if you two are as good as I think - how come you don't team up and really wack them?? It was certainly worth the wait Jed - Steve |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 11 Nov 01 - 03:05 PM Add Rick Fielding to that duo and I see gold at next year's Grammy's. Think about guys. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Rick Fielding Date: 11 Nov 01 - 04:51 PM Wow Sins, Texas, Maine and Ontario. Now that's be an international group. For what it's worth, Jed's going to be coming to Toronto soon and we'll record a couple of songs for his new album, and one for mine. I'm really lookin' forward to it. The catalyst that is Max/Mudcat knows no bounds. Rick |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 11 Nov 01 - 10:07 PM Gee, Rick. I was playing "Fantasy Island". If we get Kendall there, will you let him play tambourine? |

Just remember.......I am a founding member of The Beef Brothers". Kendall is a Mainie come lately to this auspicious and suspicious group of performers........Where the hell is Otway?? I need some help with self promotion..............grumble, mumble, sputter, spit......... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 12 Nov 01 - 09:42 AM Mick, I really didn't see an actual invitation to Toronto.Rick and Jed certainly dont need what I do! |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Jeri Date: 12 Nov 01 - 10:37 AM I told Rick I'd wax their guitars and bring them coffee and stuff, but so far, I'm being snubbed. Hmmff! (Just kidding. This is one of those guy-musician-bonding thingies. There are probably rituals involved.) And Kendall, Rick has spoken very highly of your playing, but just how many guitars can you have on one song? Hmmm...Rick Fielding/Jed Marum and the All-Guitar Orchestra... Mick, get the CD out!!! |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 12 Nov 01 - 10:40 AM I dont feel "left out", not at all. |

Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 12 Nov 01 - 05:04 PM LOL - Seamus! Pay for the postage, and that's probably a good deal. At least Kendall could get a lotts adverting! Mick - I heard we may be twisting your arm into coming up Toronto?? Is that true? Rick has gone off to rework the dates a bit - I certainly you can make it up too. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Big Mick Date: 12 Nov 01 - 07:18 PM Damn, Jed! I was not saying that so I could be one of the whiners!! Shit, ........ but yeah, looks like we are on. I had Rick drop you a line. I may have a gig for you in Michigan to help with expenses. Drop me an email when you have had time to read Rick's message. Do it quick so I can lock in a date. Jeri..........you know I love ya, but......... Mick |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 12 Nov 01 - 07:24 PM Uh Mick???? I thought you loved me? Carry your own damn guitar! Deborah Cowan's CD and Seamus' are also on the must have lists...this is getting expensive. Sorry, Cindy. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Big Mick Date: 12 Nov 01 - 07:28 PM Sins..........uh............see, ..........it's like this...........I didn't want to do it........you know how it is...........don't kick me in the ..............damn...............The biggest damn Mick you have ever seen ducks for the door Mick |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 12 Nov 01 - 08:10 PM ooops! That was supposed to say "At least Kendall and I could get lots of advertizing!" |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 12 Nov 01 - 08:13 PM Mick - I'd love it if you could arrange a gig enroute! I'll get back to you as soon as I hear from Rick about dates. The first week was hard for me because I had a date in AR that I can't move. So we are trying to find something that works better. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Jeri Date: 12 Nov 01 - 08:18 PM Mick, what was that "but," anyway!? You're supposed to say "We'd love to have you come up and go out for donuts or carry our guitar cases (at least one of you needs some sort of hazard warning when carrying instrument cases) and stuff, but you know how Rick is..." |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Big Mick Date: 12 Nov 01 - 08:23 PM He is a partner in the firm of Fielding, Patterson, Swan and Lane, Layabouts at large and for Hire. This week is his turn to be Chief Executive Layabout, and good partner that I am, I was going to take the heat for him..........he lets this shite go to his head, really gets into this Head Layabout thing.....and Jeri fawns on him so, that I just didn't want to ruin her image of him.....you know how it is. Now..........Sins........about that marriage proposal....... Mick ducking for cover |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Big Mick Date: 12 Nov 01 - 08:25 PM Jed, you should have an email from Rick anytime. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Jeri Date: 12 Nov 01 - 08:28 PM Jeez, Mick - I'll be happy to fawn on all of you! Equal opportunity fawner, here. What's this about a marriage proposial? You'd better be working on a harem... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 12 Nov 01 - 10:22 PM Marriage proposal????? Only if you agree to carry MY guitar! Actually, I was hoping for something a little less permanent. You know...one night stand sort of thing? But not the same night as Jeri. I mean - use some common sense! And if you three really are planning a "guy thing", try to tape at least some of it. Jeri will have to operate the equipment. I broke Allan's at the Getaway and he is still a little peeved over it. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: SINSULL Date: 15 Feb 07 - 09:15 PM Just read my last post and thought - I meant Allan's recorder, not his equipment. i'll leave now. M |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: GUEST Date: 15 Feb 07 - 09:49 PM ... after 6 Years you noticed?? |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Bill D Date: 15 Feb 07 - 11:08 PM Well, researchers in 2068 would have wondered, and been out looking for survivors of that Getaway, trying to get the story...good thing she fixed it! |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 16 Feb 07 - 08:10 AM Jacqui and I have been digging through some old recordings I made before I lost my voice. They are somewhat crude field recordings and I don't know if any of them are good enough to make into a CD or not. It looks like I will never be able to do any more recording, so it's this or nothing. The hell of it is, there are some that I always wanted to put out on a CD, such as Patrick Spencer, Lonesome Robin, The Minstrel Show, I Remember Loving you,Faded roses of December, The last letter home, Whose gonna buy you ribbons, and The Honor of your company. I thought of just running them off just the way they are and calling the CD, "Warts and All", or "Before the fall." I wonder if I'll live long enough to stop regretting that I didn't quit smoking soon enough. Damn. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: MMario Date: 16 Feb 07 - 08:48 AM Kendall: audiophiles can do some pretty amazing things regarding cleaning up recordings etc. I'd bet if you can hook up with one of more there's probably a LOT of your recordings that can be brought up to snuff. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 16 Feb 07 - 09:33 AM I'm sure you are right, but, that sort of talent is expensive, and I don't expect to sell a huge number of the finished product. So, I have to decide if it's worth the investment. The phrase, "Vanity press" comes to mind. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: John Hardly Date: 16 Feb 07 - 09:54 AM kendall, you might be surprised. I don't know the folks of this forum well enough, but on another guitar-related forum on which I participate there's a guy who does stuff like this as a hobby. And his end result is anything but hobby-like. I know the average age here is considerably older than at that other forum (and thus, less up-to-date with computer software stuff), but I'd be surprised if there wasn't one or two people expert enough with computer sound editing software to do a good job with your field recordings. And there's really no harm in trying. You wouldn't lose the field recordings if someone were to diddle around with them and come up with something. Heck, I just had someone send me an out of print vinyl recording of John Hartford music that, with simple computer software, came to me hiss and pop free and wholey enjoyable. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: beardedbruce Date: 16 Feb 07 - 10:01 AM "I know the average age here is considerably older than at that other forum (and thus, less up-to-date with computer software stuff), " HEY! Ive been working with computers so long I can remember when we only had zeros! 8-{E |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: ranger1 Date: 16 Feb 07 - 10:02 AM Um, excuse me?! I think it would be worth it, Kendall. I think there are enough people out there who would buy a new Kendall Morse CD, especially if you put them on CD Baby and had people like me bragging you up. A lot of it is in the promotion and I have contacts with a lot of people who like folk, but don't know what to look for or where to buy it. Heck, I've turned a bunch of under 40 video gamers into Jed Marum fans! How could I do less for you? |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: John Hardly Date: 16 Feb 07 - 10:07 AM bb, As I am "enjoying" the tenth day in a row of below zero temps, I can sympathize with your memories of "only" zero. Said another way: I can't buy nary a single degree above zero. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: beardedbruce Date: 16 Feb 07 - 10:14 AM It was a balmy 12 F here, this morning. I do think that Kendall should tidy up and release whatever he has- even if it is only telling his stories. THAT should not need too much technical work. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 16 Feb 07 - 01:24 PM I left them with a friend who does that sort of thing, and he reviewed the lot. Finally, he told me that he just doesn't have the time. There is a hell of a lot of work here to do it up right, so I'm toying with the idea of putting it all on a tape then transferring it to a CD and warning the buyer. If I'd known when I made them that it would be my last one I would have re-done the lot. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Feb 07 - 12:19 PM I think that it would be a shame if some of this stuff didn't get onto CD. On the eve of Kendall's laser operation we actually found a disc of field recordings made in 2001, not long before Kendall was diagnosed with the cancer. There are signs then of the problem. Other stuff came from old tapes and they are a bit messy, but still the voice is there. I think that any artiste would be thinking twice about putting out material that doesn't come up to the standard of previous releases. We'll just have to think about the best way forward. And I'm sorry Jed, but, being totally unbiased as I am, I would have to vote for Kendall anytime. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 17 Feb 07 - 01:49 PM You may come out of the kitchen now. LOL |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: KT Date: 18 Feb 07 - 02:49 AM YES, YES, YES!!! I've heard some of the old stuff and love it! To tell you the truth, I didn't even notice any pops or cracks. I was too busy noticing the lyrics and the picking and singing. I recently came across an old, old record, recorded in 1942. I took it to a sound engineer and had him clean it up and put it onto a CD. It still has lots of the scratchy sounds, but that's part of its charm. What was important to me was not the quality of the recording, but the preservation of it. I know it's hard for an artist to put out something they think is not their best, but the reason for releasing this one is different from the reasons behind the release of the others. I bet there are some folks around who have the equipment and expertise to help get this project done for a reasonable price. I think you should do it! KT |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 18 Feb 07 - 07:51 AM I guess if I go through the mountain of old stuff I could come up with enough to make a new CD. What bugs me is, a couple of the ones I really want to put out have glitches like a missed word or a subdued cough. I have it! I'll just call the CD "CAVEAT EMPTOR". |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Big Mick Date: 18 Feb 07 - 08:15 AM Skipper, Mick here. Do it. Love to you and the wee, wild woman. Dog too. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: katlaughing Date: 19 Feb 07 - 04:48 PM I totally agree. Do it, Kendall....we will love you even more for it.:-) kat |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Becca72 Date: 19 Feb 07 - 05:39 PM Consider this a "Yes" vote from your youngest who would really like those memories preserved somehow.... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: GUEST,Jed sans cookie Date: 19 Feb 07 - 06:22 PM Kendall - I know some very good oflks, who have experience at these things. I can find out, if you like. I don;t know about cost ... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Alba Date: 19 Feb 07 - 08:23 PM Absolutely and completely worth doing Kendall...YES PLEASE says 'I'. Sincerly and with Love, Jude |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Tinker Date: 19 Feb 07 - 08:36 PM Kendall, there is not a one of us who could come close to your critical ear when it comes to this. BUT if you let your pride stand in the way of our getting to enjoy the material that's available... well we may all have to start shopping. After all Jacqui and Mary have been giving us lessons .... it could be really fun. You could have toys in the cellar (singing ones) ... or we could all just enjoy the CD Just Do It |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 19 Feb 07 - 10:16 PM I'm working with a new speech pathologist/therapist, and she says my voice is still in there, but it needs work to come out. It's a long complex problem, but she thinks in a couple of months I shoulld have some kind of voice. That being said, it would be just my luck to put out this substandard thing, then later be able to do them right, and and .... I still think "Warts & ALL" would be a good name. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: KT Date: 20 Feb 07 - 12:30 AM GREAT! Then you would have then and now versions......I, for one would be happy to buy the THEN version now, and be thrilled to buy the NOW version when it's available!! In the meantime, there are lots of field recordings that you might not re-record, so they'd be perfect for the first CD. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: TRUBRIT Date: 20 Feb 07 - 12:58 AM I would cheerfully buy a Kendall 'Caveat Emptor' OR 'Warts and all...' - would be a pleasure!!!!! No excuses for not attending Saturday .... .I will pick you up if need be.... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: maeve Date: 20 Feb 07 - 07:09 AM I haven't bought a cd in months, Kendall, but I would buy both "Warts" and a newly recorded cd from you. I'd also volunteer to help with the project if there is any way I can be helpful. "Your move." |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: jacqui.c Date: 20 Feb 07 - 07:18 AM Keep it going kids - maybe we'll get through to the auld bugger yet! Jed - let us know what you find out please. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 20 Feb 07 - 03:01 PM jacqui.c - I need to know a bit more about the recordings. What the format? What's the quality level of recording ... etc ... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: jacqui.c Date: 20 Feb 07 - 03:12 PM There were some songs on a CD of fiekd recording made in about 2001. The other stuff comes from tape recordings made at various concerts that Kendall did over the years. He actually has some fairly good stuff, stories and songs, on video, but whether it is possible to lift the sound only I don't know. I think Kendall has a tape of the stuff he has put together Jed - if you let him have your address I would think he could send it to you. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: JedMarum Date: 20 Feb 07 - 03:21 PM Let me contact the studio I am thinking of, first. See what the engineer says about cost, times etc for such projects - then we'll see. I did some work there last weekend. I was really impressed with the engineer who runs the studio. And we talked a bit a few similar projects he's worked ... that's why I thought of him. In the meantime, I'll a PM to Kendall ... |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 20 Feb 07 - 04:00 PM I have access to some very good sound men, that's not the problem. The problem is they are so rough that it would take a genius to make them acceptable to me. For instance, cassette tapes are not very good in the fidelity department, and video cameras are worse. They tend to be muddy. My buddy, Gordon has suggested a guy in Camden, and I'm sure Sandy would be glad to make some suggestions. The problem there is, he is busy makeing a living. I'm very tempted to just cherry pick a dozen or so of the less awful ones and let the chips fall where they may. Field recordings are supposed to be crude, right? |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Becca72 Date: 20 Feb 07 - 06:20 PM I would think a little blurb in the liner notes about the situation surrounding the recordings and reasons for the CD would be sufficient...of course anything less than perfection will bother you but I think there are enough other people who have spoken up here who would gladly take this CD "warts and all" |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: katlaughing Date: 20 Feb 07 - 06:31 PM When all we had of my brother's music to sell on CD was from old master cassettes, we called them "vintage one-of-a-kind" and no one complained. It's the real-deal, down in the dirt kinda thing and people will love it from you! |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Jeri Date: 20 Feb 07 - 06:52 PM There ARE geniuses around. Nic Jones last few CDs were made, in part, from homemade recordings, although I think a bunch of the songs were straight from the boards. One of my favorite cuts of Nic Jones is when he's singing a really [unsolicited critical comment censored] song about going in a field to lie down, which is pretty [unsolicited critical comment censored], but he breaks a string part way through. It makes this horrible THWANG, and there's a bit of a murmer. He then continues to sing a capella, but he slows it down and the song get's stronger for it. It's still a bloody [unsolicited critical comment censored] song, but I love this moment. You can't engineer stuff like that. Listen, I don't buy folks recordings because they're slick and pretty. I LIKE listening to the sort of recording Paul Mills does, and it sure makes folkies more successful commercially, BUT... If your recordings, 'oopsies' and all, show your warmth and humor and professionalism and the interplay with your audience, I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT 'PRETTY'. People spend piles of money trying to get recordings to capture that 'live' feeling. Find a genius, and when the genius thinks the recordings are acceptable, set them free. ...and I want one! If the Bob had basement tapes, maybe you could have cellar tapes? I don't like warts that much, so maybe 'lumps and all'. Maybe 'rustic' or 'American primative'. Maybe you and Jacqui could do a John and Yoko style cover. Or not. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: katlaughing Date: 20 Feb 07 - 07:25 PM I agree with you, Jeri, about not caring about "pretty" and about the warts.:-)"Pure" comes to mind as well as "unadulterated." |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: kendall Date: 20 Feb 07 - 08:36 PM Ok, I'm almost convinced. |
Subject: RE: Kendall or Jed From: Barbara Shaw Date: 20 Feb 07 - 09:55 PM But wait a minute. If you could get those recordings onto the computer, it would be fairly easy to then run them through some very basic editing to remove some of the noise and hiss from the recordings. The big warts would remain intact, but the sound would be clearer. I've never tried getting cassette or vinyl onto a computer and don't know enough about sound engineering to do this for you or I would. However, if you could get a song onto the computer with some local help and then email it to me, I could try playing with it to see if I could improve the sound quality with the software I have. Not promising much. Others here know more about it than I do. Can anyone near you help you with this kind of thing? Maybe one of those sound guys near you could take just one song, improve it for you and give you something to help you make your decision. You could pay for just one and then decide if the investment is worth it for all of them. I personally think your stuff is worth getting remastered, although I agree that we all would love it any way you get it down. |

Whatever the program is that Art Thieme has does a tremendous job, too. He did some more magic for me on dad's tape and I was amazed. |
