Mudcatter "wilbyhilllbilly" does that kind of thing. He did a nice job on my dad's Cow Songs tape.

Whatever the program is that Art Thieme has does a tremendous job, too. He did some more magic for me on dad's tape and I was amazed.

But wait a minute. If you could get those recordings onto the computer, it would be fairly easy to then run them through some very basic editing to remove some of the noise and hiss from the recordings. The big warts would remain intact, but the sound would be clearer.

I've never tried getting cassette or vinyl onto a computer and don't know enough about sound engineering to do this for you or I would. However, if you could get a song onto the computer with some local help and then email it to me, I could try playing with it to see if I could improve the sound quality with the software I have. Not promising much. Others here know more about it than I do.

Can anyone near you help you with this kind of thing? Maybe one of those sound guys near you could take just one song, improve it for you and give you something to help you make your decision. You could pay for just one and then decide if the investment is worth it for all of them.

I personally think your stuff is worth getting remastered, although I agree that we all would love it any way you get it down.

There ARE geniuses around. Nic Jones last few CDs were made, in part, from homemade recordings, although I think a bunch of the songs were straight from the boards. One of my favorite cuts of Nic Jones is when he's singing a really [unsolicited critical comment censored] song about going in a field to lie down, which is pretty [unsolicited critical comment censored], but he breaks a string part way through. It makes this horrible THWANG, and there's a bit of a murmer. He then continues to sing a capella, but he slows it down and the song get's stronger for it. It's still a bloody [unsolicited critical comment censored] song, but I love this moment. You can't engineer stuff like that.

Listen, I don't buy folks recordings because they're slick and pretty. I LIKE listening to the sort of recording Paul Mills does, and it sure makes folkies more successful commercially, BUT...

If your recordings, 'oopsies' and all, show your warmth and humor and professionalism and the interplay with your audience, I DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT 'PRETTY'. People spend piles of money trying to get recordings to capture that 'live' feeling. Find a genius, and when the genius thinks the recordings are acceptable, set them free.

...and I want one!

If the Bob had basement tapes, maybe you could have cellar tapes? I don't like warts that much, so maybe 'lumps and all'. Maybe 'rustic' or 'American primative'. Maybe you and Jacqui could do a John and Yoko style cover. Or not.

When all we had of my brother's music to sell on CD was from old master cassettes, we called them "vintage one-of-a-kind" and no one complained. It's the real-deal, down in the dirt kinda thing and people will love it from you!

I would think a little blurb in the liner notes about the situation surrounding the recordings and reasons for the CD would be sufficient...of course anything less than perfection will bother you but I think there are enough other people who have spoken up here who would gladly take this CD "warts and all"

I have access to some very good sound men, that's not the problem. The problem is they are so rough that it would take a genius to make them acceptable to me.
For instance, cassette tapes are not very good in the fidelity department, and video cameras are worse. They tend to be muddy. My buddy, Gordon has suggested a guy in Camden, and I'm sure Sandy would be glad to make some suggestions. The problem there is, he is busy makeing a living.

I'm very tempted to just cherry pick a dozen or so of the less awful ones and let the chips fall where they may.

Field recordings are supposed to be crude, right?

Let me contact the studio I am thinking of, first. See what the engineer says about cost, times etc for such projects - then we'll see. I did some work there last weekend. I was really impressed with the engineer who runs the studio. And we talked a bit a few similar projects he's worked ... that's why I thought of him.

There were some songs on a CD of fiekd recording made in about 2001. The other stuff comes from tape recordings made at various concerts that Kendall did over the years. He actually has some fairly good stuff, stories and songs, on video, but whether it is possible to lift the sound only I don't know.

I think Kendall has a tape of the stuff he has put together Jed - if you let him have your address I would think he could send it to you.

I'm working with a new speech pathologist/therapist, and she says my voice is still in there, but it needs work to come out. It's a long complex problem, but she thinks in a couple of months I shoulld have some kind of voice.
That being said, it would be just my luck to put out this substandard thing, then later be able to do them right, and and ....

I still think "Warts & ALL" would be a good name.

YES, YES, YES!!!   I've heard some of the old stuff and love it! To tell you the truth, I didn't even notice any pops or cracks. I was too busy noticing the lyrics and the picking and singing.

I recently came across an old, old record, recorded in 1942. I took it to a sound engineer and had him clean it up and put it onto a CD. It still has lots of the scratchy sounds, but that's part of its charm. What was important to me was not the quality of the recording, but the preservation of it.

I know it's hard for an artist to put out something they think is not their best, but the reason for releasing this one is different from the reasons behind the release of the others.
I bet there are some folks around who have the equipment and expertise to help get this project done for a reasonable price.
I think you should do it!

I think that it would be a shame if some of this stuff didn't get onto CD. On the eve of Kendall's laser operation we actually found a disc of field recordings made in 2001, not long before Kendall was diagnosed with the cancer. There are signs then of the problem.

Other stuff came from old tapes and they are a bit messy, but still the voice is there.

I think that any artiste would be thinking twice about putting out material that doesn't come up to the standard of previous releases. We'll just have to think about the best way forward.

And I'm sorry Jed, but, being totally unbiased as I am, I would have to vote for Kendall anytime.

I left them with a friend who does that sort of thing, and he reviewed the lot. Finally, he told me that he just doesn't have the time. There is a hell of a lot of work here to do it up right, so I'm toying with the idea of putting it all on a tape then transferring it to a CD and warning the buyer.

If I'd known when I made them that it would be my last one I would have re-done the lot.

kendall, you might be surprised. I don't know the folks of this forum well enough, but on another guitar-related forum on which I participate there's a guy who does stuff like this as a hobby. And his end result is anything but hobby-like. I know the average age here is considerably older than at that other forum (and thus, less up-to-date with computer software stuff), but I'd be surprised if there wasn't one or two people expert enough with computer sound editing software to do a good job with your field recordings. And there's really no harm in trying. You wouldn't lose the field recordings if someone were to diddle around with them and come up with something.

Heck, I just had someone send me an out of print vinyl recording of John Hartford music that, with simple computer software, came to me hiss and pop free and wholey enjoyable.

Jacqui and I have been digging through some old recordings I made before I lost my voice. They are somewhat crude field recordings and I don't know if any of them are good enough to make into a CD or not.
It looks like I will never be able to do any more recording, so it's this or nothing. The hell of it is, there are some that I always wanted to put out on a CD, such as Patrick Spencer, Lonesome Robin, The Minstrel Show, I Remember Loving you,Faded roses of December, The last letter home, Whose gonna buy you ribbons, and The Honor of your company.
I thought of just running them off just the way they are and calling the CD, "Warts and All", or "Before the fall."

I wonder if I'll live long enough to stop regretting that I didn't quit smoking soon enough. Damn.

Doug my boy, we are all socialists in some ways. Consider our highways, our military, our FBI, can you imagine all those things run by private enterprise? For instance, look at the mess in the security business at the airports. A bunch of incompetent, minimum wage people, some of whom are felons. If they were federal agents, they would have to pass a background check, but, no the republicans want them to continue to be minimum wage felons. To hell with safety, gotta worship that bottom line. Sorry about the rant.

I've received quite a few CDs from friends at Mudcat since I've been here. I'm completely serious about this. I think Kendall is where you get Kendall's CDs from, so he'd need to hear from Cindy anyway.

Kendall, if you get a request from Cindy, let me know and I'll contact you for the address to send the money to.

If you don't want to go with this suggestion, I'd flip a coin. Both CDs are wonderful, but you can read the threads on them to see if one sounds more to your tastes. I, and probably most folks here, don't want to go near anything resembling a "who's better" discussion.

I've been reading all the wonderful things you guys have been saying about the CDs by Kendall and Jed Marum. I'd love to order both of them right away but my budget can only handle one right now. Maybe in a month or two I can get the other one.

So which one should I get first? Kendall or Jed Marum? Please help me decide.
