I like the name ICKLE as it is much easier to refer to someone by a mudcat Nom-de-Cat and both Jane and Myself know exactly who the subject of the conversation actually is. That said the name we have most problems with is Chris - we and our children seem to know hundreds of them, and some are male, some female, so when somebody in the family says It's Chris on the phone.... it is usually followed by minutes of trying to define WHO actually is there.
Also, there is a certain charm of somebody being who they wish to be rather than who their parents decided to call them.
In my own case, I was known across the country as Geoff the Duck for a long time before I ever heard of the Mudcat Cafe, so I don't have any problem whatsoever with my usage of the name.
As Tyke says, there are possible perils in putting your own name in a public forum, it may be safer to just teach the rest of the world to call you Ickle!
Quack! GtD.

If your "real" name is the one your mother gave you, then Deda is real enough; she also called me princess, and other variants on the name on my birth certificate. I also happen to know that Amos has in fact answered to another name in his life -- but far be it from me to divulge what rodent he was nicknamed. Except to say that he wasn't called Rat.

Subject: RE: BS: Names changed to protect the innocent???
From: Tyke
Date: 10 Nov 01 - 08:03 PM

It might be a bit late in the day but! If you use your real name on the net you are risking your own security! I would advise people to keep using their Mudcat names! I see it like this if Tyke is going to Bedworth for the weekend. No one who I do not know will be able to work out my home address. As Tyke they know my home is empty but they do not know where it is!

Also I hate to have to tell you this but there are some very funny people about and I'm not talking about Morris Dancers. You may know that I have a couple of Web Sites if visit those sites and look at the bottom of the Coblers Monday home page you will find rainbow-coloured object called a Sitemeter. This device lets me know who and when people visit this web site. It collects all sorts of information! Although it will not tell me exactly who the visitor is (unless I pay for that information) it will tell me where they came from, what system they are using and the time zone that they are in.

What I do know is that some of the visitors are commercial operators who make money collecting likely any looking email address from the web. Information is a valuable commodity! Do not give it away! I have gone to the trouble of setting up an alternative email address just to give to anyone who might then sell that on to a third party. I do not want Spam mail on my main email address so I only give it to people I trust.

I'm I being a pessimist NO my Glass is half full! I'm just being careful and web wise. You would be surprised at the scams that are going on! One con is to offer to invest 6 million pounds of third world Arms Deal Bribe money in the (Now get this! I nearly wet myself) Coblers Monday Sea Shanty Business. What who ever it was wanted was my bank details. I personally do not trust using my credit card on the net. I have had refunds on two fraudulent uses of its number being used to top up someone's Mobile Phone. So for goodness sake use a Mudcat name AND KEEP YOURSELVES SAFE!

Somehow it wouldn't be the same if everyone went under everyday names. No-one spells my last name right anyway.

I think I sign half of my Mudcat posts as "Linn" anyway and refer to Curmudgeon as Tom. Anybody confused?

Congratulations, Linda! Although there are several men who use their (presumably) real first and last names as their Mudcat name, you are the first woman, as far as I know, to do so. I say "presumably" because, of course, no one requires us to prove our identities when we sign up, and you might really be Bob Zimmerman for all I know. So your privacy is just as well protected as it always was.

Well if I used my real name would anyone believe it was my real name?

To me you will always be Micca my sweet,Actually, one of the main reason for changing is the frequency with which I now seem to meet other Mudcatters in the flesh, which in Hull is an awful lot. It seems daft to speak to Mudcatters at a folk session using one name and to refer to myself by my proper name to non mudcatrers -it is also a little discourteous to both sets of people -but this is purely my own choice .

I'm inspired to follow suit, and it feels good! 'Course, my last name is mispelled a little bit, but a lot of people like to call me Kelly anyway, so it's good enough. My surname is unique, so that Google will pull up bad jokes I told on forums eight years ago. I need to protect my freedom to say stupid things (without it showing up in a job interview, or something.)

You can all feel free to treat me as you would any other Guest. ;)

Dan K.

I loved the name 'Ickle Dorritt'

Oh well, everything comes to an end...

All the best to you, Linda (somehow you sound older now - no offense intended)

Have decided to join the real world and use my real name as my Mudcat name -so Ickle Dorritt is no more! Of course, many of you may wish to continue to call me Ickle or in Micca's case Dorritt -I will not ignore you -for indeed, I have been known to answer to anything!!!
