Does anyone know of any Christmas songs with a coastal flavour - east or west? Thanks, Rupert Ray.

Interesting... I just did a cursory search by typing @seasonal into the forum search and found not one "coastal" Christmas song! This is indeed a challenge!

Helen Creighton's 'Maritime Folk Songs' has The Blessings Of Mary (a version of The Joys Of Mary, with 12 joys):

Oh the very first blessing Sister Mary had
She had the blessing of one
To think on her own son Jesus
Who suckled at the breast so young
Who suckled at the breast so, I believe it
Who suckled at the breast so young
Who suckled at the breast so young...

That seems to be the only one in the book, but if you have access to her archive material there may well be more.

Mick

Probably not what you want but...

A little ship was on the sea,
It was a pretty sight;
It sailed along so pleasantly,
And all was calm and bright.
The sun was sinking in the west;
The shore was near at hand,
And those on board with hearts at rest,
Thought soon to reach the land.

When lo! a storm began to rise;
The wind grew loud and strong;
It blew the clouds across the skies;
It blew the waves along.
And all but One were sore afraid
Of sinking in the deep;
His head was on a pillow laid,
And He was fast asleep.

"Master, we perish! Master, save!"
They cried; their master heard:
He rose, rebuked the wind and wave,
And stilled them with a word.
He to the storm said, "Peace, be still!"
The raging billows cease;
The mighty winds obey His will,
And all are hushed in peace.

They greatly wondered -- so may we,
And ask as well as they,
Who could this glorious Person be,
Whom winds and seas obey?
O well we know it was the Lord,
The Saviour and the Friend,
Whose care of those who trust His word
Will never, never end.

Jon,

Many thanks. That's exactly what I had in mind. It sounds like it would go to the tune of "It came upon a midnight clear." Do you know anything else about it?

Rupert Ray.

Hi Rupert, I just had vague memories of one of my younger brothers singing bits of it when he came home from school. A searched google and found this which was my source for the words but have not managed to dig anything else up.

I have put a MIDI here of the tune as best as I can remember it.

Jon

Oh and the other thing I should note is it's not really coastal - a lake I think. And it's not part of the Christmas story. It could still fit a Christmas situation though with thoughts of seas and Christ. It's basis is in the NT - I'll use Mark 4 v36-40 (New International Version)

36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.
37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

Jon

Try this one! The Mummers song as performed by my Favorite Band, Great Big Sea can be downloaded as an MP3 at addy above

It is a traditional Newfoundland Holiday tune. Now that is pretty costal if you ask me!

" Hark what's that noise, out by the porch door? Granny it's mummers must be twenty or more. Her old weathered face lightens (brightens) up with a grin. Any mummers nice mummers 'loud in." or there abouts! A fun song. Nick

I've heard a "Christmas in San Diego" song, but I don't know who recorded it or where to get it.

BTW, "White Christmas" starts out:

The sun is shining, the grass is green,
The [something] and palm trees sway.
There's never been a lovelier day
In Beverly Hills, LA,
But it's December the 24th
And I am longing to be up north.

Also, doesn't Jimmy Buffett have a song about Christmas in the Keys or something like that?

Genie

Thanks for the confidence.

Great Newfoundland Christmas song, Grandma Got Run OVer by a Raindeer.

Clary Croft put out a CD a few years ago, called A Maritime Christmas Celebration. It includes songs such as Mes Noel en Acadie, Song of the Oxen, and a Gaelic Christmas Song.

Also in the Gaelic tradition, the Milling Song, Ged a Sheol Mi Air M'Aineol, is about sailing during or near the Christmas season.

I'm sure there are many more. Will have to think about it. Get back to you.

here's one from my part of the world..."The Mummers Song"..Comes from two gentlemen by the name of Bud Davidge and Sim Savory.Their group is called Simani..

Mummering,or jannying,as it is called here,is a long standing tradition where one gets dressed up in costume. One would go from house to house having the home owner try to guess who they were.If they failed to guess the person,a drink would be given,and thusly the resulting party and...hangover!

This tradition is still ongoing here in a lot of our coastal communities.

You might be able to catch the song on a local radio station here called VOCM(www.vocm.com)on Saturday mornings here from 0530gmt to 0830GMT on real audio.

I understand that Bud and Sim have a new release pertaining to Christmas here,tho the name of the tune fails me at the moment...

Christmas greetings from Newfoundland!

The Carleton Showband did one as well called "Christmas in the Harbour"...

Why do these things come to mind AFTER you have already posted a thread?

Regards!
