Mrs Smallpiper has given me the go ahead to take in some diddly diddly music USA style. So whats happening and where? I'd appreciate some advice/info Cheers John |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: SINSULL Date: 12 Nov 01 - 10:18 AM Piper - I have a house full of people expected that week so I can't offer a room. But I will see what is going on around town and let you know. Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 12 Nov 01 - 11:29 PM Well, smallpipers... On Saturday nights between 2100 and 0100 there's a session with fiddler Brian Conway at O'Neill's (Third Ave & 45th St.). That is free but, of course, you would have to buy a drink. On Sunday afternoon, 2DEC, there's this... South Street Seaport Museum's Sea Music Concert Series continues on Sunday, December 2nd with special guest Captain Rick Nestler. Virtually any singer claiming a nautical title has usually tested little more than tepid bathwater. Not so Captain Rick Nestler, who holds a 100-ton U.S, Coast Guard Master's License. A veteran of the ecological sloop, 'Clearwater,' he is currently captain of the schooner 'Argia' of Mystic, Connecticut. Well-traveled Captain Rick has sung on every type of stage from concert halls to festivals to jook joints between St. Thomas and Toronto, California and Maine. His repertoire contains the traditional songs of his native Hudson Valley, deepwater chanteys, and songs about his personal experience such as "The River That Flows Both Ways" recently recorded for Sony Records by his good friend Pete Seeger. Captain Rick Nestler accompanies himself on 12-string guitar and tenor banjo. South Street Seaport Museum's Sea Music Concert Series is hosted by the museum's own maritime singing group, The New York Packet and is co-sponsored by the New York Folk Music Society. The Sunday, December 2nd concert will be held in the South Street Seaport Museum's Whitman Gallery, 209 Water Street (between Fulton and Beekman Streets) in Manhattan. It begins at 3 PM and the suggested donation is $3. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: smallpiper Date: 14 Nov 01 - 04:08 PM I would, Liam's Brother, but we are not ariving until Wednesday 5th flying back on the Sunday evening. Thank you Mary we've got accomodation sorted out, we're staying at the Hudson Hotel 356 West 58th Street. I look forward to hearing whats on .... perhaps some of us could meet for a drink and a chat if not music? John |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: GUEST,Janice in NJ Date: 14 Nov 01 - 05:50 PM There will be a folk concert at Sun Music Company on Saturday, December 1st, at 8 in the evening. That's at 340 East 71st Street on the Upper East Side, close to 1st Avenue. For just 10 dollars you get to hear four really good and very different but typical New York folkies. They are Frank Woerner, Steve Suffet, Jessica Feinbloom, and Joel Landy. Joel is the host of a folk show on cable television and has mostly a liberal-left political following. Jessica is this a woman with a big booming voice and who does a lot of gospel stuff. Frank is a chanteyman who plays concertina. And Steve is -- well he's Steve and you'll never know what you'll get. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Suffet Date: 14 Nov 01 - 07:52 PM Janice, Thanks for the plug, but the Smallpipers are not arriving until December 5. Of course, anyone who will be in NYC the night of December 1, 2001, is certainly more than welcome to come enjoy the show. Think of it as an old time hootenanny, with Jessica playing the part of the Earth Mama, Frank in the role of Crusty Old Sailor, Joel appearing as the Angry Young Man with Guitar, and me being the Jewish Boy from Brooklyn who has somehow sprouted an Oklahoma accent. Come prepared to sing along on many of the songs. --- Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 14 Nov 01 - 10:03 PM Okay, smallpipers... this is still true... On Saturday nights between 2100 and 0100 there's a session with fiddler Brian Conway at O'Neill's (Third Ave & 45th St). That is free but, of course, you would have to buy a drink.
|
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: GUEST,Smallpiper at Work Date: 15 Nov 01 - 09:22 AM Thanks Liams Brother - I think that we'll be there (unless thats when Mrs S has booked us to see a 'Show')We have to do the tourist thing as well! Any suggestions for good eating places etc? |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 15 Nov 01 - 11:36 AM Certainly. Give an idea about your price range and tastes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 15 Nov 01 - 11:49 AM Another Saturday night event is the monthly sing at the Seamen's Church Institute in lower Manhattan. That starts at 2000 and lasts until 2300, so you could go to that and the Irish music session. The SCI is at 241 Water Street. From your hotel, you would take the southbound A or C subway trains from 8th Avenue and 59th Street directly to the Broadway-Nassau stop. Within the station, follow the signs for "South Street Seaport" and "Fulton Street." When you are above ground, you should walk down Fulton Street towards the East River. At Water Street (second street within the pedestrian precinct), make a left. If the door is locked, just tap on the glass with your wedding ring and it will be opened. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: InOBU Date: 15 Nov 01 - 01:28 PM Hey Guys! Here's an idea... and cheep! For diner there is a GREAT ethiopian restaurant on west 47th street called Meskerem. 468 47th to be exact. Meals are served on a huge central platter on a peice of bread unique to Ethiopia. Everyone gets some of the bread on a side dish as well. It is like a cross between bread and a crepe. Well, the food is great, from spicy to mild vegitarian or carnivor. How bout a New York Mudcatter get together with the Small pipers. I can try and cooerce John Maynard, a local NYC small piper to show up as well. Shall we knock around a few dates? If you never caught Ethiopian cusine, well you missed one of the great joys in life, equal to well... missing a Bernie Clay concert. No offence to Bernie if he catches this, just seemed funny at the time and with the coment about singers who claim mertime affiliation... well I couldn't help my self.... but I digress.... DINER, how bout it? Cheers Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: annamill Date: 15 Nov 01 - 01:42 PM Dan, I don't think the subways go down to Fulton any more, do they? I think they just go down to Canal Street. L.A. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: InOBU Date: 15 Nov 01 - 02:12 PM Nope the subways are running everywhere except Chambers Street, where the station was destroyed, all else is basicly back to normal. Hungery for a bit of Ethopian food??? Larry |

Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 18 Nov 01 - 08:48 PM Hi Brian! December 8 and January 19.
All the best, |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Liam's Brother Date: 18 Nov 01 - 09:07 PM Larry, with sick octogenarian parents, the wife and I rarely able commit weeks in advance. I hope we're able to get to one of the events I recommended. You and smallpiper are both pipers so, I'm sure, he and his wife will be in good company dining with you. My only concern about Ethiopian food is that the Ethiopian people are able to get enough of it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: GUEST Date: 19 Nov 01 - 06:14 AM Sorry to hear about the folks, Dan, I have only one parent, also in her eighties, but rather healthy and fiesty! If it fits the schedual, hope to see you, as the best way to get food to Ethiopian people is to share a meal with their families here in the US. I am in need of a little mudcat food, myself, in particular, a cookie. Larry sans Cookie PS We would be happy to work around your schdual Dan, as it would be great to get as many catters together for a meal as possible, especially so few are here in New York. |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Nov 01 - 08:54 AM Sinsull - LaGuardia, indeed! Wow! I wonder if I can catch anything on the Internet from the hotel... |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: smallpiper Date: 19 Nov 01 - 02:24 PM Hey Guys Mrs S was wondering if you could supply info on things to do and see that arn't the normal touristy things and how about Thursday night for the meal? John |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: GUEST,InOBU Date: 19 Nov 01 - 04:06 PM John Thursday night is BRILLIANT! I will try to get the wee wifie to take the evening off. Cheers, Larry without a cookie still... |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: GUEST,smallpiper at work Date: 20 Nov 01 - 05:08 AM Good oh now I need the location of this wee place |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: InOBU Date: 20 Nov 01 - 07:27 AM Hi Guys... let's see, Meskerem is at 468 West 47th Street tel 664 0520 (1 212 first if you are out of Mannhattan). If you are in mid town, the theater district, walk west on 47th street a few blocks, to around 9th Ave. I believe this is just before 9th between 8th and 9th on 47th. New York is on a square numeric grid, so it is very easy to find your way around. For the most part, numered streets start at 1st street, about 1/4 of the way up the island, and proceed getting higher as one goes from south to north. So downtown, south the numbers get smaller, uptown, north the numbers get higher. Then the avenunes, first Ave is east, and the numbers get higher as you go west (towards California). The streets are devided east to west at 5th Ave. So west 47th street is west of 5th, and one can guess that the numbers get higher by 100 as you proceed west, so the four hundered block will be around 9th. So the first thursday in December, we will be at Meskerem, say 7 pm? Cheers Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: smallpiper Date: 20 Nov 01 - 11:52 AM 7 pm sounds great to me. Do we need to book and how many are coming? |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: InOBU Date: 20 Nov 01 - 06:05 PM I'll phone the restaurant, thought on a Thurday night there should not be a big hassle to get a table. So, lets do a count, There is my Genie and I... Mr and Ms. Smallpiper... others check in and I will reserve a table. Cheers Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: InOBU Date: 27 Nov 01 - 08:02 AM Getting Hungery?????????????? |

Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Mrrzy Date: 29 Nov 01 - 10:27 AM I lied to poor InOBU by mistake, I actually arrive Friday at 1:55. I have a dinner early Fri eve, but then the group will go to synagogue and I will go back to the hotel, put the boys down, and HOPE SOMEBODY (Sins?) CAN VISIT ME! With a musical instrument or a voice or something... so I'm not in the tonight thing, sorry! |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: Mrrzy Date: 03 Dec 01 - 12:54 PM Well, InOBU met my train which was GREAT, we had a nice little walk around lower Manhattan to blow off some twin steam climbing all over things and seeing Miss Liberty, still one of my VERY favorite statues in the world. We three (kids and self) were then ORGANIZED into amazing things by our hosts, and had no time at all, even though I'd been hoping to have that evening while most folks went to services, turns out most folks didn't and we all went to the hotel bar and partied there... So I was delighted to meet InOBU, who's wonderful and so is his lovely whose office we took over with stuff... but I was sorry not to be able to connect with Sinsull or anyone else! Maybe next time! |
Subject: RE: BS: Visiting NYC From: SINSULL Date: 03 Dec 01 - 01:55 PM Still Thursday at 7PM? Meskerem is at 468 West 47th Street tel 664 0520 Sorry Mrrzy - life was less than sane around here last week. My son left and his friend arrived. Maybe next time. |
