Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Gots to Move From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 02 May 09 - 06:36 PM Certainly one of the best recordings ever made of this song was "You've Got to Move" by the Two Gospel Keys, recorded in New York, Asch AA1, 1946. They were in their 60s at the time. The Keys were Emma Daniels, vocal and guitar, and Mother Sally Jones, vocal and tambourine. For sheer raw excitement those two were hard to beat. From Atlanta, Georgia, they were found singing on the streets of New York. Every one of their 17 recordings is outstanding. They were reissued on CD -- Document DOCD-5221 -- which also includes the amazing Sister O. M. Terrell. They deserve to be a whole lot better known. Bob https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOrXSDFDK94 |
Subject: I Shall Not Be Moved, Ackley 1908 From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 02 May 09 - 01:58 PM I Shall Not Be Moved appeared in print in 1908, copyright renewed by Rodeheaver Company, 1936 and later. The date of composition is usually cited as 1906. The lyrics are by Alfred H. Ackley (1887-1960), "Hymns for His Praise No. 2," and are as I posted them 18 Feb 07. The song with the verse "As a tree beside the water" originated with Ackley; different from the songs "You Got to Move' and the 'Union' song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: You Gots to Move From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 Feb 07 - 12:19 PM Sometimes listed with these songs is "You Got To Move," by Lizzie Miles (1930s); with different subject matter. Her song deals with dysfunctional interpersonal relationship between two people. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I Shall Not Be Moved (attrib. Ackley) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 18 Feb 07 - 10:12 PM Lyr. Add" I SHALL NOT BE MOVED (Attributed to Alfred H. Ackley) As a tree beside the water Has the Savior planted me All my fruit shall be in season I shall live eternally. Chorus: I shall mot be moved I shall not be moved Anchored to the Rock of Ages I shall not be moved. Tho' the tempest rage around me Through the storm my Lord I see Pointing upward to that haven Where my loved ones wait for me. When by grief my heart is broken And the sunshine steals away Then his grace, in mercy given Changes darkness into day. Alternate verse: When at last I stand before Him Oh, what joy it will afford Just to see the sinner ransomed And behold my sovereign Lord. http://www.audiblefaith.com/pages/sg500454 |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: YOU GOTS TO MOVE From: Azizi Date: 18 Feb 07 - 05:26 PM I consider "We Shall Not Be Moved" to be a sister song to "You Gotta Move" {when the spirit says move}. "We Shall Not Be Moved" was used as a union protest song and as a [1960s African American}civil rights song. I bet this song was also based on a spiritual. Here's the words as found on http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/7840/song6.htm WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED CHORUS We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved Just like a tree that's standing by the water We shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved The union is behind us, We shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We're fighting for our freedom, We shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We're fighting for our children, We shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We'll building a mighty union, We shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved Black and white together, We shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved We shall not, we shall not be moved Young and old together, We shall not be moved -snip- Here's a musical transcription of this song with additional verses: http://www.gospelmusic.org.uk/v-z/we_shall_not_be_moved.htm Transcribed: Guitar Picker - www.gospelmusic.tk Words and music: Unknown We Shall Not be Moved Chorus: G D7 We shall not, we shall not be moved, G We shall not, we shall not be moved. C B7 Em Just like a tree that's standing by the water, G D7 G We shall not be moved. Glory hallelujah I shall not be moved, Anchored in Jehovah I shall not be moved. Just like a tree planted by the water I shall not be moved. In his love abiding, I shall not be moved, And in Him confiding I shall not be moved. Just like a tree planted by the water I shall not be moved. Though the tempest rages, I shall not be moved, On the rock of ages, I shall not be moved. Just like a tree planted by the water I shall not be moved. -snip- Since I don't read music, I'm not sure if this is the same tune that I know. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: YOU GOTS TO MOVE From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 18 Feb 07 - 05:25 PM No idea where the Silbers obtained their "Civil Rights version." They provide no references or documentation. It is, of course, spawn of the spiritual. Don't know if I can find one that qualifies for the definition of spiritual- all those posted here by date belong to the gospel period. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: YOU GOTS TO MOVE From: Azizi Date: 18 Feb 07 - 04:56 PM "Lyr. Add: We're Gonna Move When the Spirit Says Move Civil Rights version" I'm sure that my church was singing that version before the Civil Rights movement started. Most Civil Rights songs were based on spirituals. I think that's the case with this version too. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: I GOT TA MOVE From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 18 Feb 07 - 02:03 PM Lyr. Add: I GOT TA MOVE Georgia Sea Islands I got ta move, we got ta move We got ta move, we got ta move O, when the Lord, get ready You got ta move You may be rich, you may be poor, You may be high, you may be low, But when the Lord get ready You got ta move. My brother move, my brother move My brother move, my brother move O, when the Lord get ready You got ta move. Sometimes I'm up, sometime I'm down Sometime I'm almost to da groun' O, when the Lord, get ready You got ta move. Recorded Georgia Sea Islands, 1960s. "Ring shouts' tended to carry simple messages and contained simple lyrics." The version... "recorded in the 1960s during a live acapella performance by a group of Georgia Sea Island women, began at a lilting pace, with booming voices, syncopated claps and stomps on a naked floor creating, in the truest sense, an orchestra without instruments. One woman kicked off each line, but she was quickly accompanied by the harmonizing wails of the others. Then, a few bars into the plaintive melody, the plodding footfalls sped up and the clapping went double-time. The resulting sound was layered and throbbing and sepulchral, as if it had wafted up from a sad netherworld." The author goes on to explain the meaning(s) of the song. The words here are probably different from those of earlier versions of the song, but spirituals were never constant or 'frozen.' www.stanford.edu/~rickford/L73/SS.Ch5.SingersToasters.rtf (The Led Zeppelin song is unrelated in theme.) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: YOU GOTS TO MOVE From: Azizi Date: 18 Feb 07 - 01:40 PM Here's the version of this spiritual that I learned as a child {Atlantic City, New Jersey, 1950s} You gotta move when the spirit says move. Move when the spirit says move When the spirit says move You gotta mo-ove, Lord. You gotta move when the spirit says move. -snip- Other verses in that same pattern: You gotta pray... You gotta shout... You gotta sing... You gotta clap.. ** Fwiw, I've never heard the other spiritual or blues versions posted on this page. Thanks for hippin me to them. |

Title variants are: "You Got to Move," "You've Got to Move," "You Gotta Move," "You Got ter Move," and "When the Lord Gets in the Storm." Several recordings were made before World War II, including Memphis Minnie's (see Blues and Gospel Records 1980-1943). Post-war versions are by Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Zion Travelers, Charlie Jackson, Clarence Fountain, Marion Williams (the title is "The New You've Got to Move"), the Fairfield Four, Pearly Brown (on video It's a Mean Old World), the Moving Star Hall Singers (on Tribute to the Robert Johnson Era; and Been in the Storm So Long), and Rev. Gary Davies. Guitar Slim's "Come On My Kitchen" uses the same tune (on Living Country Blues, disc 2). Another version ("You Got ter Move") was collected by Ruby Pickens Tartt in Alabama in 1930s (in Olivia and Jack Solomon, Honey in the Rock, p. 16). ~Masato
