Subject: LYR REQ: I don't feel no ways tired
From: emily rain
Date: 12 Jul 99 - 08:43 PM

a while ago i was looking for this gospel tune... no luck. jack (who is called jack) came up with the chorus:

I don't feel no ways tired
I've come too far from where I started from
Nobody told me
That the road would be easy
I don't believe he brought me this far to leave me

but not the verses. i found a couple sound clips on CDnow and similar places, but none were good enough quality to catch the melody, or long enough to catch the words. the guy at the gospel archives couldn't help me either. grrr.

ideas anyone?

DON'T FEEL LIKE I'SE ANYWAYS TIRED

Oh, the Lord is comin', Hallelujah!
Lord is comin' round in glory, hallelujah!
Cho.
Oh, my Lord, I don't feel like I'se anyways tired,
Jes' give me that ole glory, hallelujah!

I do hope to shout in the mornin', when this old world's on fire,
Jes' give me that ole Glory, Hallelujah!

Can't you hear those angels singin', Hallelujah!
Angels singin' round in glory, Hallelujah!

Dere's a better day a-comin', Hallelujah!
Oh, Lordy, it's comin' round in Glory.
Cho.
Can't you hear those mourners moanin', (moanin') Hallelujah!
Cho.
I do hope to shout in Glory, when this old world's on fire,
Jes' give me that ole Glory, Hallelujah!

This is another song the Men's Chorus at Union Baptist in Stamford sings... from a different source. Probably a more modern version of the song..

I don't feel no ways tired
I've come too far from where I started from
Nobody told me the road would be easy
I don't believe he brought me this far to leave me

Jerry

"I Don't Feel No Ways Tired" Jerry mentioned is in Songs of Zion (p. 175), which says the writer is Curtis Burrell (arr. by Kenneth Morris). It was sung by Delois Barrett Campbell and the Barrett Sisters in the documentary film Say Amen, Somebody (1983). Great rendition.

There's a related song titled "I don't feel no-ways tired" in Hampton and Its Students (1872, p. 228, with tune).

I DON'T FEEL NO-WAYS TIRED

1
I am seekin' for a city, Hallelujah,
I am seekin' for a city, Hallelujah,
For a city into de heaven, Hallelujah,
For acity into de heaven, Hallelujah.
Oh, bredren, trabbel wid me, Hallelujah,
Oh, bredren, trabbel wid me? Hallelujah,
Say, will you go along wid me? Hallelujah,
Say, will you go along wid me? Hallelujah.

CHORUS: Lord, I don't feel no-ways tired,
Children, Oh glory Hallelujah,
For I hope to shout glory when dis world is on fiah,
Children, Oh, glory Hallelujah.

2
We will trabbel on together, Hallelujah, (bis)
Gwine to war agin de debbel, Hallelujah, (bis)
Gwine to pull down Satan's kingdom, Hallelujah, (bis)
Gwine to build up de walls o' Zion, Hallelujah. (bis)
CHO.--Lord, I don't feel no-ways tired, &c.

3
Dere is a better day a comin', Hallelujah, (bis)
When I leave dis world o' sorrer, Hallelujah, (bis)
For to jine de holy number, Hallelujah, (bis)
Den we'll talk de trouble ober, Hallelujah. (bis)
CHO.--Lord, I don't feel no-ways tired, &c.

4
Gwine to walk about in Zion, Hallelujah, (bis)
Gwine to talk a wid de angels, Hallelujah, (bis)
Gwine to tell God 'bout my crosses, Hallelujah, (bis)
Gwine to reign wid Him foreber, Hallelujah. (bis)
CHO.--Lord, I don't feel no-ways tired, &c.

"I Don't Feel No-Ways Tired" becomes "I Am Seeking For A City" in Dett, Religious Folk Songs..., p. 36-37.

A much simpler version appears in Allen, Slave Songs of the United States, # 90, p. 70, under the title "I Don't Feel Weary." (with tune)

I DON'T FEEL WEARY

Cho.
I don't feel weary and no-ways tired,
O glory hallelujah.

Jest let me in the Kingdom
While the world is all on fire,
O glory hallelujah.

Gwine to live with God forever,
While the world is all on fire,
O glory hallelujah.

And keep the ark a-moving,
While the world is all on fire,
O glory hallelujah.

The song seems to be a fragment.

The Cleveland Index suggests a similarity with Allen, "Don't be Weary, Traveler," p. 75, but except for the line "don't be weary," there is little in common. The Index also states that "I Don't Feel No Ways Tired" also appears in Penner, Prey, and Johnson (Green Pastures Spirituals).
