I am trying to find the music and the rest of the words to this hymn. I have about one verse, which follows
"In the Bible we are told
of a prophet who was called
to a city that was steeped in awful sin
all the people in that place
were devoid of saving Grace,
but the prophet seemed afraid to enter in"
any help will will result in the happiness of an old lady who remembers this from her childhood. thanks =-=-=pennpap=-=-=

JONAH AND THE WHALE

In Bible we are told
Of a Prophet who was called
To a city that was steeped in awful sin;
And the people in that place
Were devoid of saving grace,
And the prophet was afraid to enter in.

Over there, over there,
In that land so bright and fair,
He will tell us all about it over there;
On that happy, golden strand,
We'll take Jonah by His hand,
And He'll tell us all about it over there.

Then this Prophet forth was sent,
That old Ninevah might repent,
But instead to Tarshish he set sail;
Oh! the winds began to blow,
Overboard did Jonah go,
And he found a mercy-seat inside the whale.

Over there, over there,
In that land so bright and fair,
He will tell us all about it over there;
On that happy, golden strand,
We'll take Jonah by His hand,
And He'll tell us all about it over there.

In the cold and briny deep,
Tears of grief did Jonah weep,
And the big fish threw him out upon the shore;
Then he gladly went his way,
Preached to Ninevah night and day,
And he did not care to backslide anymore.

Over there, over there,
In that land so bright and fair,
He will tell us all about it over there;
On that happy, golden strand,
We'll take Jonah by His hand,
And He'll tell us all about it over there.

Oh, some people don't believe
That a whale could him receive,
But that does not make song at all untrue,
There are whales on every side,
With their big mouths open wide,
Just take care my friend or one may swallow you.

Over there, over there,
In that land so bright and fair,
He will tell us all about it over there;
On that happy, golden strand,
We'll take Jonah by His hand,
And He'll tell us all about it over there.

Many souls are tossed about
By the whales of fear and doubt,
But the Saviour wants to take them by the hand;
If they will his voice obey,
He will save them right away,
And will guide them safely to the promised land.

Over there, over there,
In that land so bright and fair,
He will tell us all about it over there;
On that happy, golden strand,
We'll take Jonah by His hand,
And He'll tell us all about it over there.

I found the lyrics and MIDI here (click).
I think the tune is "Sweet By and By." Is it?

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: The Prophet

just saw this, Joe!
The recording I have of this song is by Grandpa and Ramona Jones, on a King (KCD-822) reissue; don't know when they made the original record. Tune is rather different from Sweet By and By; in fact it is most closely approximated by Frank Jenkins' instrumental, Wandering Boy; we've taken to playing Wandering Boy in between verses.
THANKS for posting these lyrics. I love the way the Old Testament story is told in the first verses (with some humor) and then the New Testament lesson in the last verse.

The lyrics posted by Joe Offer above are the same as those in HymnTime.com, where it says the song was printed in The Joy Bells of Canaan: Burning Bush Songs No. 2, edited by Arthur Ingler & Elisha A. Hoffman (Chicago, Illinois: Burning Bush, 1905).

Both Uncle Dave Macon (1924) and Grandpa Jones (1949) have recorded this song with minor variations in the lyrics.
