I always try to find a suitable song to reflect news and current events although some of the links are a bit tortuous and cause groans amongst the audience. However I do have a number of songs that I sing at the same time each year: eg The Incredible String Band's "October Song" in, you guessed it, October ; Leon Rosselson's "Tim McGuire" as close to November 5th (bonfire night in the UK)as I can or any Buddy Holly song around February 3rd.

Does anyone else have songs that they perform to mark special occasions?

At Alcester FF last June I sang Stanton Drew - "Midsummer's Eve it fell on a Saturday". But I'll have to wait a few years before I can sing it again.

Hal and Tow, Bedford May Carol, Padstow May 1st, two of them shortly after Dawn. (Yes she does have a nice voice doesn't she) The other Dawn, the one at 5.00 am in the bloody morning. When most decent peole are fast asleep and the Morris Dancers are out in High Park. Dance to the New St. George on St George's Day. Country Life, anytime time of year, cos it has four suitable verses. Christmas Carols in December I think ;) JohnB

Ah, yes wandering minstrel you've reminded me that I too sing Dancing at Whitsun at that time of year for my maidem Aunt Em who was one of those who never married after her sweetheart was killed in 1916. She lived to the age of 95 in the Gloucestershire village in which she was born and was always cheerful and great with us kids.

Come to think of it, the song would be appropriate at this time of year too.

Rosebud In June, etc. etc. Time of the month, you know. The morris I have been with also sing particular songs to do with location. If we are in *The Plough & Harrow* then it's ploughing songs and suchlike, or if we are in the *Lord Nelson* it'll be songs of British naval deeds. We aint sung in Mountjoy Prison yet ;-) Also Cutty Wren and others as per occasion.

What about places? Ever sing songs because you're in the place?

Have sung London River countless times (now I've remembered more than one line of it....) crossing London Bridge.... was singing a song by Jim Redford about the Normandy Landings, whilst on the beach at Aramanche a few years ago... have played the Dorchester Hornpipe in Dorchester, and sung Linden Lea at Came (Barne's home when he died)...

I've never made it to Jerusalem yet, but when I do, I'll have a lot to sing!

Oh, and we once drove through Limerick..... need I say more??

But I usually respond to people in the audience
"Blow ye winds in the morning" for US visitors
Farewell to Nova Scotia, South Australia, Tamaranui (NZ), etc and "Somebody's Moggy" or one of my own in the same mould about rabbits for the kiddies. Halloween, Remeberence Day, Good Friday, and many more but I do have a few alternatives for most occasions.
I find it helps to have a reason for singing other than self-satisfaction.

Yes- Jed sang Normandy Orchards at the singaround tonight, and I finished the night (well and truly) with The Quiet People which I notice is not mentioned anywhere on the mudcat. I will type in the words shortly- very appropriate for this time of year.
