Under the graphic in red "Packages sent by mail, post paid, to any part of the Army or United States. Address--R.B. Nicol care Gibson Brothers, Printers, 271 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC" At the bottom of the sheet in red "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1864 by R.B. Subject: RE: Civil War song - 'Vets of '64' From: Uncle Jaque Date: 30 Nov 01 - 12:27 AM That's a new one on me, Pard - and I collect this stuff! Since over 3,000 songs were written (that are known of, any way) during the ACW, this is not unusual. I'll keep an eye out for published examples of it. In the meantime - could you kindly direct us to the source of that MIDI file of "The Enniskillen Dragoon"? Frankly, I've never heard of that one either! I reenact with the 3rd Maine Volunteers (1st Div. III Corps), who fought in several of the Battles mentioned in this song - perhaps not that far from your Ancestor. One of my Ancestors was wounded at the Battle of Cold (sometimes spelled "Coal") Harbor with the 25th Mass. Vol. Inf., 2nd Div. 18th Corps. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE VETERANS OF '64 From: Dunkle Date: 13 Nov 01 - 09:23 AM Well, why not... THE VETERANS OF '64 Air - The Enniskillen Dragoon Our soldiers of the great campaign Have all a lawful claim On those who love to write and sing In honor of their fame Then let me sing a song for you, I never sung before- 'Tis of our Veteran Volunteers Of eighteen-sixty-four. The Battle of the Wilderness Where many heroes fell, Presented such an awful scene, No words can ever tell. And though our loss was very dire, The rebels lost still more; And their bodies were consumed by fire In eighteen-sixty-four. The fight at Spotsylvania As a record shall remain; We are too much for the Johnnies When they fight in open plain. With the battle cry of "Liberty!" We down upon them bore, And routed them completely In the war of sixty-four. The Battle of Coal Harbor, too, Was also fought and won, Before the siege of Petersburg Our vet'rans had begun. And 'ere our plan to them was known, A thousand Rebs and more Five hundred feet on high were blown In eighteen-sixty-four. "The Rebel Raid in Maryland" Was quite a cunning plan; But it was soon checkmated By our general in command. With his ever ready veteran band, The sixth and nineteenth corps; They were driven back to Dixie's land In eighteen-sixty-four. And in the general hospitals You read in language plain, Where wounded soldiers thin and pale Ne'er murmur or complain, That our cause will be triumphant- For these veterans sick and sore, Pray for success to General Grant And the war of sixty-four. |

Subject: Civil War song - 'Vets of '64' From: Dunkle Date: 13 Nov 01 - 09:02 AM I just inherited some previously-unknown-to-me Civil War era letters from my 16 year-old relative in the 51 NY volunteers, many from his location at the siege of Petersburg, VA, to his mom and sisters back home in Brooklyn. Interesting stuff! Anyway, one of the letters is written on paper on which is written the words of a song "The Veterans of '64", sung to the air of "The Enniskillen Dragoon". I've done a Google search, and found a midi file that lets me listen to the melody, but I can't tell if "The Veterans of '64" is a known entity or not. Is there anyone on mudcat with the expertise to help me with context? Would it be useful to someone for me to post the words somewhere? Thanks, Don H. |
