We also have a letter printed on stationary with the same lyrics but our lyrics are set to the "Air-Within a Mile of Edinboro' Town". Under the graphic in red "Packages sent by mail, post paid, to any part of the Army or United States. Address--R.B. Nicol care Gibson Brothers, Printers, 271 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC" At the bottom of the sheet in red "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1864 by R.B. Nicol, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia" R.B.Nicol composed a number of Civil War songs.

That's a new one on me, Pard - and I collect this stuff! Since over 3,000 songs were written (that are known of, any way) during the ACW, this is not unusual. I'll keep an eye out for published examples of it.

In the meantime - could you kindly direct us to the source of that MIDI file of "The Enniskillen Dragoon"? Frankly, I've never heard of that one either!

I reenact with the 3rd Maine Volunteers (1st Div. III Corps), who fought in several of the Battles mentioned in this song - perhaps not that far from your Ancestor. One of my Ancestors was wounded at the Battle of Cold (sometimes spelled "Coal") Harbor with the 25th Mass. Vol. Inf., 2nd Div. 18th Corps.

I just inherited some previously-unknown-to-me Civil War era letters from my 16 year-old relative in the 51 NY volunteers, many from his location at the siege of Petersburg, VA, to his mom and sisters back home in Brooklyn. Interesting stuff! Anyway, one of the letters is written on paper on which is written the words of a song "The Veterans of '64", sung to the air of "The Enniskillen Dragoon". I've done a Google search, and found a midi file that lets me listen to the melody, but I can't tell if "The Veterans of '64" is a known entity or not. Is there anyone on mudcat with the expertise to help me with context? Would it be useful to someone for me to post the words somewhere? Thanks, Don H.
