Subject: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: GUEST,Simon Paul Date: 13 Nov 01 - 08:03 PM Is it a euphemism for 'fuck off' - at least in the way it's used here at mudcat? Thanks, I'd be grateful to know Simon Paul |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: Lonesome EJ Date: 13 Nov 01 - 08:27 PM I think Eddie Murphy told the story. He had just completed a stand up comedy routine at The Comedy Store and Bill Cosby was in the audience. Afterwards, Cosby, who was then often seen as a spokesman for Coca Cola, berated Murphy for using too much obscenity in his act. Eddie later called Richard Pryor and told him about Cosby's lecture, and Pryor said "ah, tell him to go have a Coke and a smile and fuck himself!" |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: GUEST,Simon Paul Date: 13 Nov 01 - 08:33 PM thanks, Lonesome EJ I had assumed as much - but worth checking, given the transatlantic nature of this place Simon Paul Don't mean to ignore Australians, but can't think of a word that explains vertical relationships in the same way that 'trans' explains horizontal ones... I think I first used it on our resident snorb, Gargoyle and since have used it numerous times on others, often only as a joke....sometimes with a distinct flaming intent. I have noticed over the past few months that it seems to be gaining some popularity in it's shortened version. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: Jeri Date: 13 Nov 01 - 09:17 PM I believe the actual line was "Tell him to have a Coke and a smile, and shut the fuck up." (Yeah, yeah - I'm being picky.) |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: catspaw49 Date: 13 Nov 01 - 09:20 PM Sorry, I have always used it as Jeri said.....Have a Coke and a smile and shut the fuck up!......I didn't finish Leej's post when I saw the storyline. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: Amos Date: 13 Nov 01 - 09:52 PM I'm fond of the W.C Fields version, which he was said to have coined when the butler came to hom while he was standing around plastered to thewto the gills, to inform him that Richard B. Mayer (of Matro-Goldwyn-Mayer) was standing at the door of the mansion insisting that Fields come to work as scheduled. Fields pondered the situation and then replied, "Well, give him... an...evasive answer. Tell him to go fuck himself!". "Evasive answer" has been one of my favorite circumlocutions ever since. A |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: Kim C Date: 14 Nov 01 - 09:41 AM I heard a couple of radio DJs say it in the context of "this is how it is and you'll just have to get over it." Which is basically a more polite way of giving the Evasive Answer. |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: John MacKenzie Date: 14 Nov 01 - 02:46 PM Did you hear That Coca Cola and Pepsi are going to amalgamate, and are changing their slogan to "Be sociable, have a poke" Well it works for me, but then the only use I have for either is to dilute my rum. Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: catspaw49 Date: 14 Nov 01 - 02:49 PM Jock, I dilute my Jack and my Bacardi's both with Coke. I fill the glass with booze, show it the Coke, drink up. Well I used to anyways .................. *sigh* ...................... Sobriety kinda' sucks sometimes........ Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: GUEST Date: 15 Nov 01 - 06:41 AM When "Coke is it" was plastered over every bill-board, I remember seeing grafitti on a wall in Belfast reading, "Coke is sh" "Drink Coke and choke" "Wino" |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: Kim C Date: 15 Nov 01 - 11:44 AM I took the Pepsi Challenge once... and picked Coke. Which was good, because Daddy used to work for Coca Cola. I will take Pepsi if it's the only choice, but I much prefer Coke. Actually Diet Coke these days... soft drinks have so much freakin sugar in them... |

Subject: RE: BS: What does 'have a Coke and a smile' mean From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Nov 01 - 03:37 PM For years I misheard it as 'have a coat and a smile', and couldn't work out why. Then it became 'have a poke and a smile' and I understood that a lot better, but still it wasn't connecting..... Now I just have the coke and leave the smiling to some other sugared up twit. LTS |
