NEVER HEARD A MAN SPEAK LIKE THIS MAN

Cho.
I never heard a man speak like this man before, (twice)
All the days of my life, ever since I bin born,
I never heard a man speak like this man before.

They carried him to the court house, they tried him one by one,
They'll find no fault in Jesus, in nothin' he said an' done.
Cho.
He spoke once in Jersalem, to de one he loved the best,
I would not have bin there, if my brother had not bin dead.
Cho.
He spoke once to Nicodemus, says he must be borned again,
All the days of my life, ever since I bin born,
I never heard a man speak like this man before.
Cho. (Between verses, sing last two lines of chorus, then all three lines, making a 5-line chorus.

Krehbiel, Afro-American Folk Songs, p. 159, Neve' a Man Speak Like This Man, probably is similar (not seen).

Here are two more verses:

He spoke to me one morning and these are the words he said
Said, I'll make you sweet and holy
And you will never be afraid
I'll make your burden lighter
I'll make your pathway brighter
But I never heard a man speak like this man before

Nicodemus went to the Lord
He went to the Lord by night
He said Rabbi, which means Master
Will you show me to the light?
Nicodmeus, let me tell you like a friend
You've got to be born again
But I've never heard a man speak like this man before

This song is on:

The Original Five Blind Boys of Mississipp: I Never Heard A Man
Jewel Gospel Series JCD-3126

Thanks for posting this, Dicho. This has been on the Gospel Messengers learning list. Now, I've got the words on paper...

Are the words in the other verses the same or different from the Lomax one?

The chorus is identical, but the two other verses are not sung on the recording. Same song, same chorus, completely different verses..

B.B. King recorded this song on his spirituals album. The Krehbiel version, from "Bahama Songs and Stories," by Charles L. Edwards, Ph.D., published for the American Folk-lore Society, is not so similar:

NEVER A MAN SPEAK LIKE THIS MAN

CHORUS: Oh! look-a' death; look-a' death.
She's trav'lin' thro' the lan'.
She's trav'lin' thro' the lan',
For I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.

1. I wish ole Satan would be still,
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.
An' let me do my Master's will.
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.

2. I heard sich a ram'lin' in the sky,
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.
I tho't my Lawd was passin' by.
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.

3. Jacob's ladder mus' be long.
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.
The angels shout from 'eavin down.
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.

4. I saw King Peter on the sea.
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.
He left his net an' follow me.
I neve' sawhr a man for to speak like this man.
