Yes, the show will air on Sunday December 23 from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time. In the NYC area you can listen in at 89.1 FM, or on the internet through our website at www.wfdu.fm.

I have about 50% of the show edited together. I am hoping to have it available for Mudcat by Sunday, but I have been delayed in finishing the show due to some other projects. One way or another, either pre-taped or live, the show will be on this Sunday!

Thanks again to everyone who submitted messages. I will be able to air all of them. I might be able to sneak in a few stragglers, so if you haven't done so you can send an e-mail to wfdutraditions@aol.com

Thanks again!!!

Well! Everyone sounds very excited, even (especially) you, Ron. A grand idea...any rough edges will make it so refreshing... I write now to say that if you DO need another song, do use, "Brightest and Best," from KY Christmas- Old & New, but if you do, please explain that it's just a family singing (about thirty Ritchies, gathered in our log house on a snowy Kentucky hillside). No trained voices nor choral arrangements, just people enjoying the song and the season. Natural harmonies on the chorus- this is a real "rough edge," but is sincere and from the heart. Merry Christmas! Jean

Hi Musicman!

If you would like to send me an e-mail with your link that would probably be the best bet. My e-mail address is wfdutraditions@aol.com. I am really not sure how large of a file I can accept. Kat was the only file that had to be broken down into separate files.

As Kat mentioned, I would LOVE to read greetings as well.

Ian, Ron is going to archive the show, right here on the Mudcat, so you can listen to it whenever is a good time for you.

Thanks, ya'll. This is going to be so much fun. If I might answer, Musicman, from my experience, putting it on your website would probably be best, but of course that's depending on what Ron says, too.:-) I did have to send 3 separate files of a 5 minute story in order to get it to him, via email, as mp3s.

Can't wait to hear this!! Thanks, Ron!!

Can't you just hear it? "Ho, ho, ho, this is Big Nick...er, I mean Big Mick, sending out me love for the Fair One and setting up for the Fertility Rites in the Temple. Greetings to all those other LayAbouts At large and everyone else at Mudcatville. Long may Max reign!"

"Joe Offer, here, with a gentleman's hello from sunny Cal, up in the chilly-willy mountains, where I get a special massage daily from my lovely intended."

The show will be broadcast on WFDU-FM on Sunday December 23 from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time. You can listen in via the internet at www.wfdu.fm.

People in the NYC area can listen at 89.1 FM.

I also intend to archive the show here at Mudcat - hopefully the week before it airs on WFDU.

At this point I have about 15minutes of Mudcat greetings & recordings from Mudcatters. There have been some great poems, stories, and songs. The offer is still out there - if you wish to submit a greeting you can either send me an e-mail for me to read on the air or an MP3 file. The email address is wfdutraditions@aol.com .

Thanks again for your interest. I encourage more people to send their greetings! I think it will be a nice way to let my listeners discover the wonderful community here at Mudcat!

Ron, by now you've probably heard that we lost our email and internet server ; we're two of the 850,000 AT&T lost when excite shut down. I am using a borrowed acct. and our phone line, so my access and time are limited and @home email addy doesn't work.

Did the new versions of the story parts sound better? Thank goodness I did them Friday before the shut down! I can still connect and redo, if need be, as I do have fullspoken@hotmail.com as my other acct.

I could have sent this in a PM, but I thought I'd help out with another "refresh."

Thanks a bunch,

If you would like to send a greeting just send me an e-mail - wfdutraditions@aol.com . It can be a short greeting like "Hi this is J.Doe from Mudcat wishing all a wonderful holiday!". If you are technologically inclined you can send a MP3 file. If you are really inspired, send a poem, story, or a song!

I encourage everyone to participate - it will be fun! I hope to post the completed show within a week or two, so please send me your greetings!

Thank you so much!

I am still trying to figure out how large my mailbox is for AOL. Since I haven't received any MP3 files yet directly into that box, I don't know whether it is not accepting it - or if people haven't had a chance to send. I have had a few notes from people who said they were planning on sending something.

Just to insure that I receive your material - if you send an MP3 file, could you also send a separate e-mail stating that it was sent? This way I confirm that I receive everything. I would hate for somebody to go through the effort to record something and not have it received because of a technical problem.

A reminder - the e-mail address is wfdutraditions@aol.com

Our mailing address is: WFDU-FM c/o Ron Olesko 1000 River Road Teaneck, New Jersey 07666

Lots of questions... hopefully I have some answers! :)

I have to check on what the limit of my mailbox is. I have AOL so if anyone knows the answer to AOL's limit's I would appreciate the help!

I am looking for both traditional and original. Since my show is called TRADITIONS, I have an affinity for traditional music.

Yes, I do reserve the right to program the show. Most listeners to my show will agree that I am pretty liberal in what constitutes "folk" music. I probably would pass on a heavy metal version of Silent Night, or if someone submits a X-rated version of the 12 Days of Christmas, I probably would not air it. Likewise if I receive 30 versions of Silent Night. Perhaps later today I will post a summary of what people have already suggested to me. So far there has been no repitition and the submissions sound great! If anyone has any questions - please email me - wfdutraditions@aol.com. I want to get as many people involved as possible. If for some reason I have too many submissions that couldn't possibly fit in the format of the radio broadcast, I would be happy to put together an "internet only" version in addition to the regular show. I do intend in some what to recognize EVERYONE who takes the time to contribute to this show.

As for my two different names - I have to admit that I was sloppy when I joined. I first signed on my home computer. When I attempted to logon at work I inadvertently made a second entry. I decided to keep one for use at home and one for use at work so I won't miss anything. (Just in case my boss is watching - I login at lunch hour!!!!)

Thanks again everyone!

Ron

Ron, you *are* going to reserve the right to choose what will and will not fit in the flow of the program, right? It's a lovely idea to broadcast all submissions, but sometimes not all the contributions work out.
BTW, how come you have two different names on your postings to this thread? Just wondering.

Alice (and all),

Please send me whatever you would like. I want to keep this open to everyone.

If anyone is looking for ideas, I can tell you that my show does tend to stick towards traditional music - and I always like to play songs that might be new to listeners. However, I don't want to restrict anybody! (Okay, maybe a heavy metal version of Rudolph won't fit!)

As it turns out I just recorded an Xmas song. Wrote it 2 years ago for a party -- it's kinda like a cross between "The Chipmunk Song" and "Makin' Whoopee." It may be a bit too much for your show . . . hmmm . . . well, it will be on my mp3.com page the day after Thanksgiving, if you want to sample it.

I'm with you on the not-being-overly-religious-but-still-get-warm-fuzzies-at-Xmas thing, and this year more than ever. Looking forward to the show!

E

Just a thought...

For those of you who are going to record either a song or a message like Kat, please use your name - either real or your login name to identify yourself as a member of Mudcat.

Example - "Hi this is Katlaughing of Mudcat and I'd like to read a little poem...." or "Happy Holidays, this is Norton1 from the Mudcat Cafe...." You get the idea. This will be fun!!!

Ron

I have an old poem that was gifted to me by an unknown author. I also have a story to go with it. Is this something of interest? I've carried it in my guitar case for over 20 years - quite an inspirational piece for me.

Mary -

I always aim to inspire!!

As I mentioned in my original note, this show has always been a favorite of mine to put together. I am not a deeply religious person, but this holiday is always special because of the meaning and the sense of family and community it brings. I was amazed when I first started receiving calls from listeners who said they looked forward to the show. I figured that this year would be the perfect time to invite all the Mudcatters to the show, and hopefully introduced some of my listerners to Mudcat!

I will keep everyone posted on the progress!

Ron

Good point Ivan. If anyone would like to snail mail - the address is:

WFDU-FM att. - Ron Olesko 1000 River Road Teaneck, NJ 07666

In addition to files, I can also receive CD's or MiniDisc's at that address. I would prefer not to receive tapes, but if that is the only option I will try to work with them.

Smaller MP3 files would be fine to e-mail to wfdutraditions@aol.com

Thanks again!

Ron

Ron,
That is a wonderful idea. It may even inspire me to decorate the tree this year. Last year's sat alone in a corner and died when I lost interest. Thank you.
Mary

Ron, do you want WAV or MP3 files snail mailed or sent as an email attachment? If the latter, do you have an email box which will allow for the size of the sound files? WAV files, of course, are HUGE, and even MP3 files are pretty big. Just getting two or three in the same day could clog up most email boxes.

Thanks Kat!

About 10 seconds for the message, but I am flexible. A poem sounds real nice! I would enjoy reading it, but if you would like to record it yourself and send it as a WAV or MP3 file that would be okay too!

Thanks so much!

Ron

Oh, Ron! That is a wonderful offer!! Thank you so much! I always enjoy your shows so much and to be able to hear some of our own, those which we don't already hear on there, would be really special.

I think it might be a good idea to give us an idea of word limit, though, because we are a wordy lot and the messages we'd probably like to send out to you and each other, as well as family might get pretty long! Don't want to take up a whole show.**BG*

This sounds just wonderful. Would you consider a reading of a poem? I have an old Christmas card, from the Rocky Mountain West, probably circa 1930-40, with a poem which is short and very beautiful, with a Western flavour. I'll have to look at the postmark. It was sent to my parents or grandparents, can't remember which.

Thank YOU, so much! I hope Skarpi sees this, and Escamillo.

Hi!

Since 1980 I have produced a 3 hour program of traditional music for WFDU-FM and my program TRADITIONS. Each year we present carols and seasonal songs from artists like Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Odetta, Christmas Revels, Nowell Sing We Clear, Judy Collins, Jean Ritchie and so many others. In addition to the "names" that I listed above, I've also tried to incorporate traditional musicians whose names might not be household words. The program also includes stories behind the songs AND the traditions. The intent has always been to present seasonal music in a pure and "folky" fashion.

It has always aired on the Sunday before Christmas and each year I receive phone calls and notes from people who gather family and friends to listen - some even trim their trees with my show in the background.

Please excuse me if I sound boastful, but I am very proud of this particular program. I've always tried to put together a program unlike other shows that air around this time. Sorry Bing, we won't be playing your version of "White Christmas" this year, although Leon Redbone's may get a spin.

I thought it would be nice to try something a little different this year. Some of you may have heard the copies of Traditions and The Sunday Session that are archived here at Mudcat. I thought it would be nice to see if any Mudcatter's would be interested in sending some recordings of themselves to be included. I don't expect anyone to go into a studio, but those of you who have access to a decent microphone and can record a WAV or MP3 file are welcome to contribute. I would love to hear some of the less-familiar songs, perhaps a few international carols.

In addition, I welcome any Mudcatters who wish to send a greeting to pass the message along. I will read or play as many as I can, and as many as fit the show. You can e-mail me at wfdutraditions@aol.com

The show will air on WFDU-FM (89.1 in the NYC area) on Sunday December 23rd from 3 to 6pm. You can listen in via the Internet atwww.wfdu.fm

I will try to pre-tape the show the first week in December, so please try to send notes to me by December 1. Once I finish taping it, I will post the show here at Mudcat (Thanks again Max!!!) so that people might be able to enjoy some good music for the holiday season.

Thanks for taking the time to read this note and consider my request. I have really enjoyed Mudcat on many levels. I hope this show will in some small way be looked at as a way of saying "thanks" and "happy holidays" to a wonderful community.

Sincerely,

Ron Olesko Producer/Host WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS & THE SUNDAY SESSION
