Subject: Outlook express From: kendall Date: 16 Nov 01 - 09:14 AM For the last month or so, I have had way too much trouble with Outlook Express. Now, it either locks up, or it wont open at all. Anyone else having trouble with it? |

In the office it was like, office mail would come and go from the regular Outlook program, and external mail would come and go from Outlook Express. What in the sam hill do I need TWO mailboxes for? Too much like work. So I just uninstalled it. I have heard Eudora is a good program. |

Subject: RE: Help: Outlook express From: Bill D Date: 17 Nov 01 - 11:10 AM ahh..Kendall..in most email programs there are settings for 'default' mail program...yours is still set to Outlook Express...Since it was on;y deleted from the list, and not from the PC, it appears (when you set up Eudora it 'should' ask you if you want it to be your mail program and override others....I'm looking now for a place to set that option...and in Outlook Express, there should be a place to UNCHECK whether you want IT to be the default...I will look for that too) |

Subject: RE: Help: Outlook express From: Bill D Date: 17 Nov 01 - 11:23 AM ok...in Eudora, under 'tools' in the menu on top, the last thing at the bottom of the menu is options..this gives you all the settings...scroll down to "extra warnings" in the pretty menu on the left...in the extra warnings list there is one which says "warn me when I start Eudora and it's NOT the default mailer" .so, check that and it should give you the choice to override OE... (I leave OE just sitting up in the corner for occasions like this *grin*...it has a place under 'tools', 'options' where the only choices you get are MAKE this my default browser....) |

Subject: RE: Help: Outlook express From: Bill D Date: 17 Nov 01 - 11:30 AM yep..as Jon says..you should reset Internet Explore too, if you use it...under 'tools' 'options' 'programs', there are menus for what you want to work...in the mail handler menu, I think it gives you Eudora as an option, and it should then automatically look for Eudora when mail comes in,.. there are a lot of things these programs can do, so there are a LOT of places to set preferences...after a while, you just sorta get used to looking in the menus for all the settings and deciding what they mean and if they are what YOU like. |

You will be using Hotmail but the client software is much better and your email address will be chosen_name@msn.com. Pleas understand, this does not provide free Internet access. It assumes that you alread have an Internet Service Provider (ISP). I a high-speed cable modem connection that is always on but one could get a free MSN email account using a dial-up ISP as well. One advantage to the strategy is that I can change ISPs and not have to change my email address. Another advantage is that I can read and answer email from any Internet-connected computer, I don't have to be home to do it. Of course you can sign up for a free Hotmail account without using MSN Explorer but your email address will be your_name@hotmail.com. If that's okay then no problem. I preferred the shorter and more professional sounding msn.com domain name. If you'd like more information, let me know. - Mark |

This may be needed for secure operations in corporate, securities, banking, etc. It coordinates with your "identity" or profile program and mailbox and down/uploads secure messages, client records, etc. It sucks and is a poor way to accomplish this and has all the flaws you guys have mentioned but if your employer has committed to an MS system of this stuff you are kind of stuck. I use Agent for everything I can but requests to the mainframe are black-boxed to go through Mailbox and OE or similar nasty program. Because of the virus problem, I only post through OE to corporate, not to real people. I've never been sure just where or how the default mailer and browser are set but here's a couple of things... Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon, then Properties | Programs. Set your own items there. If you're feeling adventurous & want to really purge your computer of the offending program, back up your system.dat, system.ini, user.dat & win.ini. (or find your latest rb???.cab in a later Windows version) and do Start | Run | regedit. Ctrl-F search for any reference to Outlook. F3 to repeat search. Delete them all. |

(Since you got it froma Google link, I assume it was from Eudora.com...made by Qualcomm)..You don't say what told you it was infected, or what it was supposedly with. I can't imagine why a virus would be put in a Windows temp file anyway...and Eud3 is a strange name for a file with a problem..... You also don't say whether Eudora was installed correctly and whether you tried to run it, or whether you deleted that file, etc.... whatever the problem is, it is not likely to be from a download from a major company.

What it really means that something "suspicious" is going on - like writing new information to registry and other critical files. (Note that if this happens, the antivirus may have blocked the installation - and you may have an incomplete installation that needs to be fixed.) Once the file is downloaded, you need to open your virus scanner and scan the downloaded file before you begin the installation - if you're worried about where it came from. The above step is usually overkill, since your antivirus should check all incoming stuff during the download operation. If it doesn't find a virus in the downloaded file, you may need to turn of the virus scanner while you do the installation. Don't forget to turn the antivirus program back on when you finish the install. John |

The advantage is that it keeps spam away from my "real" e-mail account, and that I can access it from anywhere, including my part time job so that when I'm working nights and Tom's working days and we don't see each other from Sunday night until Thursday supper time, at least we can e-mail each other while I'm at work and Tom's awake. Basically I (we) don't really have problems with OE.............only when it comes to haveing individual postboxes. If for example the little daughter is on the computer and wants to check for Emails, then any that were waiting for me to come round, fall into the Main Identification box, and doesn't wait for me to collect my own post. That I find annoying, and the other thing is my husband couldn't use his OE and ended up starting a Hotmail accouont, which defeats the purpose really. It is the first time I ever heard of Eudora.I checked up on Eudora.com, and had a look at what it would take to download..........1hour and 25 minutes!!!!!!!!!! That answered a lot of questions! Eudora, FoxMail, Pegasus and others WANT to be secure and design their programs to make it difficult for viruses to operate **unless YOU go out of your way to help the virus**!!. The new PegasusMail, in particular, was written to be as secure as any email program can be....as well as having wonderful features. (Me? I have about 8 ways I *can* check my mail, but the final download is still to Eudora, just because I like the interface better) (many people simply consider Eudora to 'look better' and have more user-friendly options and menus) |

I DID download the freeware 5.1 with all the ads back when I had a much smaller screen and immediately got rid of it because the ads took up way too much screen real estate. But Eudora Lite is fine for my purposes, so why not. (Oh, and I won't make any comments about how much less aggravation Macs are as far as installations and de-installations.) |

Difficulties in just getting a successful defrag indicate that there is something fundamentally "wrong" in his system. This may be the result of setup problems, registry contamination, software conflicts, or a myriad of other things. Outlook and Outlook Express are fairly decent programs. They do not satisfy some users, and use of another program is certainly an option. If Outlook Express works, and you don't like it, then certainly - get something else. The fact that Outlook Express "doesn't work" on Kendall's machine means that there is something that is not working. Throwing another program onto a defective machine is NOT going to solve his problem. - As has been indicated, he is having trouble getting Eudora to install - Probably for the same reason(s) that OE isn't working. A good (or dedicated mediocre) operator, with a little experience, could possibly "clean up" the machine. By long-distance guessing, about the only thing that makes real sense is a Format and Reinstall. I am NOT NOT NOT NOT recommending that Kendall do that, until he has exhausted other options. At this point, I have no specific suggestions, other than that Kendall find someone who can look at his machine and get it cleaned up. (I would suggest that he make sure that the kak virus is not "on" it.) My sympathies are with Kendall, and I'll try to watch this; but right now I think he needs to get the machine working, and let the email wait until later. John |

It seems to go as planned, but, after it is installed, I try to use it, and I get a notice that says NOT REGISTERED, so, it just sits there doing nothing. The guy who built this thing is 20 miles away, so, I hesitate to take it there and leave it. Looks like I will have to. What pisses me off is the fact that I have always used OE with only an occasional note, that it is not responding. I could live with that, but, suddenly, any link I get in an e mail will not open. |

I just cut the URL and paste it into the File - Open window of Explorer. Lite also doesn't read HTML. It just displays the HTML code. This helps identify the junk e-mail adds right away.
