4 corrupt files now Kendall... maybe there is 1 simple explaination but I'd advise taking it to the guy who built it or letting someone who knows what they are doing taking a look at it.

Maybe I am a doom and gloom merchant but I have visions of worse happening to your PC if this attempting to fix based on advice here continues - I hope I am wrong.

Kendal I had the same problem a year ago and what happened to me is this.My brother got a KAK WORM virus and since I was on his mailing list it was automatically sent to me.My Norton Virus Protection red flaged it and I was able to put it into quartine and then delete it,but it stayed in my email box at my server and every few days it would pop up and I would have to go through the same procedure again. The way I solved the problem the next time it happened I deleted it out of my computer shut the computer down and then went down to my server and had him dump my email box. This solved the problem.Maybe this won't solve your problem but it is worth a try,and if it is not posible for you to go to your server and tell him a phone call will do,but make sure he dumps your email box.Like my server said he hadn't heard of such a thing.I'm like one of the others that wrote their opinion I believe you have a live virus in your email box and if this is the case this is the only way you can get rid of it.Louie Roy

It's possible you had a virus/worm such as Magistr in the past, and you deleted the virus itself, but not the files it had already created or damaged. (Magistr, by the way, has also been 'upgraded' to work with Eudora) Those files can mess things up. In any case, I'm guessing, just like everybody else. Doesn't matter. The fix is to take it to an expert.

I just bought the latest version of Norton, it ran a complete scan of all files, and no virus was found. The hell with it, I have an expert coming on Saturday. Being a typical Taurus, I'm stubborn, but, I'm NOT stupid. I know when I'm licked. Thanks so much for all your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Once Uncle Bill has his claws in you...........
anyway MSN is a Trojan Horse. Every few months my copy of IE deletes the setting for my homepage and inserts MSN. Conspiracy theorists wouldn't even break a single bead of sweat on that one
is Hotmail that secure?

Getting on with a Taurus is easy, you just make him/her think it was his/her idea.

Help, please.
Recently, Outlook Express has removed access to some photo enclosures from relatives in the last two weeks.

The method of preparing the picture seems to be part of the problem; the same picture sent jpeg arrived, but another (gif?- forgot to ask, but it had been put through Adobe) was blocked.
The message was "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: Porteous Road View." It was a view of fields and mountains from the front porch.

The same happened to one sent by a son-in-law of his boy in Little League baseball uniform, but he is away and I can't determine his method of transmission. He sent it twice; the first was refused as too large by a back-country dial-up for one recipient was the one stopped by OE to me. The second, smaller, came through to me without warning. I have cable broadband, etc., supposedly all the bells and whistles.

I have not authorized nor can I find any blocking instructions with the OE that I have. I looked at the Programs instructions; to me they were gobbledegook. It is Outlook 6. Is there something in their system that does this? Why are some methods of photo transmission censored and not others?
Any suggestions?

Press the button to FORWARD the message. The attachment should open from there. I do this all the time, and I have NO idea why it works, but it's easier than figuring out why OE thought it was a dangerous attachment. Norton AV has never identified a problem with these mails.

Hey now, it worked. I get the forward form, click on the attachment, and get the danger form message, but now I am given the choice of opening, saving, or canceling. It opened to the picture.
Norton doesn't find a problem, as you say.

Thanks, Wysiwyg! The ways of OE are indeed mysterious.

Q -

In Outlook Express, Click Tools on the top bar, Click Options, then select the Security Tab.

There should be two little round "buttons," and the usual selection is "Internet Zone," which is the "less restrictive" choice. If you select the "Restricted Sites" you could get some communication difficulties, although your current problem doesn't sound like it comes from there.

There should be two square boxes just below. It's probably a good idea to have a check in the first one - "Warn me if...," but your problem could come from the bottom one that says "Do not allow attachements to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."

If this box has a check in it, you can probably safely click and remove it if you have a decent AntiVirus to back you up. The check in this box could be the reason for rejecting your photo attachments.

If the box is unchecked, and they are still being rejected, it's possible that your AV is "tagging" them, and OE is just "cooperating" with its notice.

Note that Norton AV versions prior to the AV-2003 have a lot of trouble with scanning incoming email on a "real time" basis on some systems, and it can cause similar blockages that may look like they're from OE. If you're concerned, you should check to be sure that your version does check email, and of course if it doesn't you should try to remember to manually scan any questionable email attachments before you open them. (All recent versions do allow a manual scan - some just don't reliably automatically scan all incoming email.

Q, I discovered that quite by accident. I was about to forward a message like that to one of my Hotmail accounts to see if Hotmail would wash it out, and noticed that the attachmnet appeared as clickable when I went to put in the address.

Funny how "secure" we aren't!

Yes, the second box (do not allow) is check-marked. I have the latest Norton with subscription, and never open anything from an unknown source (not using the computer to receive orders or do business), so I may uncheck it. On the other hand, Wysiwyg's solution is simple, solves the current problem, and leaves the precaution in place.

Thanks, John, for the information. Probably like many dubs, I haven't looked into 'options,' etc., and wouldn't know the significance of actions in any case.

Q -

The problem with that check box is that OE tends to think all attachments are suspicious - or at least too many to be helpful if you commonly trade stuff as attachments.

It's a little like the Office programs that try to refuse to open any Word document with a macro in it. Macros are useful and necessary in some useage of Word, and it's a pain getting it to turn off - and especially annoying when you open the same document, from your own machine, for the 20th time and it insists you shouldn't do it.

If you have a current version of a good AV that scans incoming email and attachments, you shouldn't need to have OE making a separate decision about it; but if "working around" it is more comfortable for you, then that's the way to go.

John
