I would like to believe that using the term "Southland" is an analogy for being "down" in the heart, or saddened. This is not a comparison to the Southern USA, but to the term "south" meaning "down". By listening to the lyrics and overall feel of the song, I think Bruce is referring to the sadness of the heart...I could be wrong...usually am...but that's how I have it!

It seems to me to be a metaphor. A comparison of the warm, loving center of the heart to a a warm evening in the southern USA, where the scent of magnolias perfumes the night air. It could be in Mobile, Alabama, or Savannah, GA., etc.

It's a reference to Alabama, where everyone in the USA wants to live...*grin*

Canadian Bruce Cockburn has written a beautiful song called 'Southland Of The Heart' which I am beginning to learn. I don't understand the reference to 'southland'. (The song refers to "The southland of the heart where night blooms perfume the breeze / Lie down, take your rest with me".) Is it a particular Canadian or North American reference?
