JOB, JOB

O Job, Job, (uh-huh)
O Job, Job, (uh-huh)
Oh, what you reckin'? (uh-huh)
Oh, your daughter's dead. (uh-huh)
O, Job, Job, (uh-huh)
Oh, what you reckin'? (uh-huh)
Your servant's dead. (uh-huh)
Just listen at Job, (uh-huh)
What Job said, (uh-huh)
"Oh, bless-ed be (uh-huh)
The name of the Lord. (uh-huh)

Cho. (twice) Oh, run Mount Zion,
Run, Mount Zion,
Oh, run Mount Zion in the mornin'.

Job, Job, (uh-huh)
O Job, Job, (uh-huh)
Oh, what you reckin'? (uh-huh)
Your daughter's dead.
Just listen at Job, (uh-huh)
What Job said, (uh-huh)
"Oh, bless-ed be (uh-huh)
The name of the Lord. (uh-huh)
The Lord he giveth, (uh-huh)
And the Lord take away, (uh-huh)
An' blessed be (uh-huh)
The name of the Lord." (uh-huh)

Cho. (twice) Oh, run Mount Zion, etc.

Oh, Joshu-ay, (uh-huh)
He prayed to God, (uh-huh)
To stop the sun (uh-huh)
An' he stopped it dead, (uh-huh)
Right on the line. (uh-huh)
An' the battle was foughten (uh-huh)
Ten seven times. (uh-huh)

Cho. An' the sun stop steady,
Sun stop steady,
Sun stop steady in the mornin'.

Cho. Oh, swing low chariot,
Swing low, chariot,
Oh, swing low chariot, in the mornin'.

Cho. Oh, I want to go to Heaven,
I want to go to Heaven,
I want to go to Heaven in the mornin'.

Cho. Ah, weep on, Mary,
Weep on, Mary,
Oh, weep on, Mary, in the mornin'.

Cho. Oh, moan on, Marthy,
Oh, moan on Marthy,
Oh, moan on, Marthy, in the mornin'.

Vera Hall, Dock Reed and Jesse Allison, Livingston, AL. Taken directly from recordings.

JOB, JOB II

Cho. 1 (Sung twice)
Swing low, chariot,
Swing low, chariot,
Swing low, chariot in the mornin'.

O, Josh-uay was
The son of Nun,
And God was with him
Until his work was done.
God opened the window,
And began to look out,
And the ram horn blowed
An' the children did shout,
Well, The children did shout
Till the hour of seven,
When the walls fell down
An' God heard it in Heaven.

Cho. 1
Swing low, chariot,
Swing low, chariot,
Swing low, chariot, in the mornin'.
Cho. 2
Up Mount Zion,
Up Mount Zion,
Up Mount Zion in the mornin'.

O Job, O Job,
Oh, what the captain say?
Just listen to Job
What Job he said,
"The Lord he giveth,
And the Lord he take away,
And bless-ed be,
The name of the Lord."

Cho. 1 and 2.

Well, Methusalum
Was the oldest man,
The oldest man
Ever lived on earth,
He lived nine hundred
And sixty-nine,
And died and went to Heaven,
Well, in due time.

Cho. 1 and 2

Harold Courlander recorded a very long version of "Job, Job," sung by Rick Amerson and Earthy Anne Coleman. The sound recording is on Folkways FE 4472 (not heard). The text and music are in Negro Folk Music U.S.A. (Columbia UP, 1963, pp. 53-56, pp. 226-226). He comments:

A song usually known as "Job, Job" is one of the outstanding epics of the Negro religious literature. Rarely heard twice the same way because of its length, its scope, and its rich fare, the song alludes to significant scenes scattered throughout the Old and New Testaments. Whether these scenes ever appeared in a more or less chronological order is not evident, but as now heard there is no rigid sequence. (p. 52)

Another 4-stanza version ("Job, Oh Job") is in Solomon, Honey in the Rock (Mercer UP, 1991, pp. 74-75).
