Subject: Bookmarks: where to find help From: Tom French Date: 19 Nov 01 - 10:58 AM Hi everyone, I've been trying to learn more about how to get around at the site. I recall reading something about information on bookmarks. I know where to find them on my personal page, but I don't know how to use them or what their objective is. In particular, I recall that something said I could bookmark where I left off reading the forum, but after three hours or more I cannot find it a second time. Can someone get me back to that place in the permathread or tell me which index item gets me to the bookmard discussion? |
Subject: RE: Help: Bookmarks: where to find help From: Marymac90 Date: 19 Nov 01 - 11:34 AM Dear Tom, I have no idea how you would bookmark where you left off reading the forum, or even if that's possible. I don't think anybody can ever read ALL the posts! What you can do is put a tracer on specific threads that you want to be able to follow later posts on, or to find old posts again. Right above the box where you add to a thread, and also to the right on the list of threads, there is a blue clicky thing that says Add Thread to Tracer. If you click on that, the thread will show up on your personal page forever, or at least until you tell it to stop tracing it for you. I hope this has been helpful. Probably Joe or the joeclones will give you a technically better answer soon. Welcome to Mudcat! Marymac |

Subject: RE: Help: Bookmarks: where to find help From: Tom French Date: 19 Nov 01 - 11:45 AM Marymac 90: Thanks for your input. I figured out the tracer/detracer routine, but I'm not acquanted with Add Thread to Tracer and what it accomplishes. I shall study it. Sorcha: Right, "Messages since last visit" is the correct subject. Thanks

Subject: RE: Help: Bookmarks: where to find help From: Tom French Date: 19 Nov 01 - 12:14 PM To All: I've solved the problem via using "Messages Since Last Visit" link in the index, setting the "Now" button on the Messages Since Last Visit page and bookmarking that page on my browser. Very handy when you're visiting the Forum on an irregular basic, hours apart or days apart. I can never remember when I was last on. |
Subject: RE: Help: Bookmarks: where to find help From: JohnInKansas Date: 19 Nov 01 - 06:26 PM Since I nearly always have Word open to make notes, I usually just right click on the Address in the IE control bar, Control-C to copy, go to Word and Control V to Paste and I've got a record of where I was - right next to the notes I've been making. The "http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=41297&messages=6 that I'm looking at on my IE bar now, would bring me back to this thread. If you want to "save" a specific post within a thread, note the name and date-time, go to the top of the thread and click on it there, and then copy and the address from the tool bar. When you want to come back, just highlight the addy in Word, Control C, back to IE, click in the address bar and Contol V to paste. Hit Enter, and you're back. John |
Subject: RE: Help: Bookmarks: where to find help From: Tom French Date: 20 Nov 01 - 08:42 AM Thanks John, I think I'll try your routine as I also usually have Word open. I've also noticed that the "Messages Since Last Visit" gets very extensive over night with each thread addition being reported separately. Also the message can't be traced from that site location. I'm planning on going back to simply entering the Forum and use your tip of copying the net address. Tom |

Threads bounce around in the list by going to the top of the Forum list with each new reply addition. Do you copy the date and time to Word as well as the current address?
