If you could exchange your singing voice or your ability to play a musical instrument for, well, let's say money, or to be thinner or better looking or whatever....would you?
If someone came along tomorrow and said I'll take your talent and give you ???, aside from the obvious things like your loved ones health and happiness and possibly world peace...what would tempt you to swap?

(Mutter, mutter, must be getting old... pain in the diodes..life? huh.dont talk to me.... only a sort of nondescript tail.. but kind of finished things off...mutter, mutter( no , Andreas, NOT the german meaning of mutter))

Outside of eternal peace of mind, if someone wanted to take my voice and give me something in return, I'd ask for Gordon Boks voice.

Wouldn't be much of a trade for them, being, as I am, of somewhat dubious musical talent.

Can't say right now if there is anything I would give up playing the accordion for. Although there are many things I would like to be able to do in addition to playing the accordion.

I was about to say "nothing" but then I read Kendalls post. I would swap anything for eternal peace of mind but the question did once again make me realise how much musical ability (although I want more...) means to me.

My musical ability for anything in the world???? Tee Hee. How about my musical ability for musical ability? Or world peace? Or to have a doctor tell me "Sorry. You have to gain five pounds."

But if I couldn't sing? I would probably cry a lot. I rarely sing for others but every day for myself.

Morticia - it is a good question but you didn't answer it...

And Kendall - the world doesn't need two Gordon Bok's. Knock it off! Your voice is older and froggier and for all that you are still Kendall Morse, folk singer. I will probably be accused of being a sycophant again. But if the truth be known, it is worse than that. I am a Kendall groupie. He even let me carry his guitar at the Getaway.

The assurance that things will go as well for my children as they have for me - all things considered - for the first sixty years, anyway.

With the trend toward abdication of individual responsibility and individual liberty in this society, I'm afraid it ain't very likely.

Morticia,

thought a lot about your jolly good question.
I played a lot of instruments in my youth, now only the treble recorder, stopped plucking the guitar.
Most I enjoyed singing in the church choir and blowing the big bass in the church brass band. In 1983 I had a nasty car accident (my life was saved by the US Medical Corps, they found me first), but I lost my voice and a big part of my lung volume.
If I could swap today, I would give my LEFT HAND for being able to sing and play again like in former times (for the bass the right hand would suffice, the pressure to the mouth piece could be done with the stump of the left).

Hmmm. Tough one - I'd swap my musical-instrument-playing talent, since I've never played an instrument, I assume that I do have talent but it isn't being used, so I might be giving up a great pleasure but at least it isn't one I've experienced - but not my singing, now that I've gotten there. What would I swap it for? Well, after 6+ years, that much at least is easy!

Sorry Sins, I know I didn't answer my own question....still thinking it through, which is why I wanted your input.
I once had a really fabulous looking woman ( you know, perfect skin/hair/teeth, sexy, slim, tall etc.etc.) tell me she'd give it all away in a moment to be able to sing.Would I swap being able to sing to lose my depressive illness though? Perhaps as well it's a choice I don't have to make.

And Kendall, don't you change a damned thing!
Signed,
Another Kendall groupie.

Same here, Kendall, I PREFER your voice to Gordon's! He should just be quiet and pick!**BG**

I can't think of anything that I would give up my musical abilities for unless it was a matter of life or death for one of my children or a family member or friend.

As for chronic illnesses and depression, consider this: our music and our singing have come through such crucibles and may not be as good or genuine, etc. if they'd not. It's that silver lining thing, ya know?:-)

Now, if you have a good deal on some moxie & chutzpah, I might be persuaded..*grin*

I went to a wife swapping party once, got a dead mouse, a train set and an empty beer bottle. kept the train set, abused the dead mouse and got 2pence back on the beer bottle. I think it would be the other way round for me. I'd have to swap something off to get guitar and singing talent.-I've got a train set, an abused (dead)mouse (slightly rotten now) and 2 pence-anybody want to swap?

absolutely nothing... not world peace... not kids or family... not peace of mind (how dull would THAT be?!?!?!) Nothing at all!!!

Ten years have worn this guitar down
Its ivory whites are now mustard brown
Its face brears cracks from every town, still it resonates with age
Who would without its ring
Who would I be if I didn't sing
For half a chance you spare nothing --
A tethered bird to a tethered cage.
I sing to you to feed the dream
I call to you 'though it's a muted scream
We're one on one projected beams
Translucent future be our sage

that about sums it up I think....

My statement was only partly serious. Some years ago, Gordon and I were talking, and, I said to him, "I'd give my front seat in Hell to be able to sing down there where you sing." he said "I'd give MY front seat in Hell to be able to sing up there with YOU"! We called it a draw. I love every one of you, especially the women!

My voice and my limited instrumental abilities as they may be aren't up for trade. When I don't know what else to do, somehow music often does it for me. It's soothed restless fevers and homesick campers, heartaches, nightmares, and soul searches. Can't imagine the hole if it was gone...

Thought about it for a moment but then decided it's not contest. To adapt the old money/libraries saying, "Music will get you thru times of no women better than women will get you thru times of no music." It's the other way around, Morticia. What would I give up to be a better musician? Anything but my dog.

Sheeees....that's a toughy. About the only thing that could entice me from my voice would be perfect health and a really good memory, or the buying of a really good life for my kid (which I could do myself with perfect health and a really good memory).

Now, my bodhran playing? I'd trade that in for a lot less. Say...like 20ish less pounds and 10ish less years? Yeah...that I could live without a lot more easily than the voice.

That remineds me. For those living in the Maritimes and northern New England : Two cases of tulemaria... tumelaria ? can't recall the spelling... have been confirmed in northern New Brunswick. Comes from rabbits, muscrats and beavers and contaminated soil (you do the math). You can get it from eating undercooked meat or from contact of an open wound with the blood of an infected animal. With the wound, a bump at the wound occurs. In either mode of infection, swollen glands occur and there is sometimes flu like symptoms. It is fatal if not treated quickly.

Interesting question. It reminds me of the one that goes soemthing like, if you were to lose the use of one of your five senses (vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch) which one would you be most willing to part with?

Difficult to answer.

Most people would balk first at losing sight...as would I. but looking at all the others, I think, memory being what it is, that might the first one I could let go of...I KNOW what a tree looks like...and could be happy to hear its leaves in the wind, smell its sap rising in spring and leaves decaying in fall, taste its apples and nuts, feel its rough bark and smooth leaves...

But back to giving up my musical ability for some big sum of money or what have you...well, it's mostly rhetorical since how could one actually give up one's talent? Then again the conditions could be something like, one agrees never to sing or play again in exchange for...

No. No, I say. I have been given a gift and the faculty to improve it and enjoy it and it does seem a silly thing, to trade it away, for money or a mansion or even a handsome playboy...
