I am trying to find the full lyrics to the song "On Wings of Song", which has these lyrics within the song, but I think I have mixed verse lines up....

I have this in a book called Sing Care Away, Book 1 published by Novello & Co Ltd, possibly in the 1950's (according to the Australian National Library). It was the book used by at least one of our high school music teachers. Some of the songs are still among my favourites, 50 years later.

The lyrics are credited to N. MacFarren. They are the same lyrics as those posted by GUEST,J. Theakston, on 01 Oct 07 - 06:14 PM

The only differences in the lyrics are:

Instead of "A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells." my book has "The rushing ..."
A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells.

And in the last verse the second last line changes from "And joy will never fade" to "That joy will never fade". Then the last line is just "never fade".

So my book has it as:

And there we will sit and rest us,
Under the palm tree's shade,
And dream that love has blessed us,
And joy will never fade,
That joy will never fade.
never fade.

These lyrics are closer to what I learned at Dore School about 1947-1950 from Music Teacher Miss Cruikshank. I was a boy soprano at the time (out of breath now for even a broken baritone) and sang this with the school choir. I remember the emphasis my teacher put on holding "waiting" for nine bars.

I remember singing this song in 6th grade. It went something like:

On wings of song I will take thee to India love we will go.
There a sweet garden I will make thee where Ganges' deep waters flow.
A garden there brightly is shining beneath the moon so clear
and lotus flowers are all pining to see there sister dear
and lotus flowers are pining to see there sister dear.

The violets whisper and thither while roses tell stories of love

The freely happily ranges the gentle Willie gazelles

I did a solofest version of this song that went:

....

And then it talked about Palm trees and lotus flowers and a sister but that's all I remember.

This thread helped jog my memory a little but none of these are what I remember. I guess there are multiple versions that make this way harder to find than I previously thought.

I wish I kept the lyrics.

Does anyone know this arragement? I've tried googling for the lyrics but nothing has worked so far. I'll keep trying, and maybe ask my old teacher who gave out the sheet music.

I am amazed at the number of different versions there are in English. The one I learnt at school nearly sixty years ago went something like this:

I have a few recordings of this song , by Kenneth McKellar, John McCormack and Brendan O`Dowda, the O`Dowda LP is an EMI STAL 6013 ISSUED 1960, O`Dowdas rendition on this old LP is excellent, although having just listened to i, the words of the first verse are different to all on here.

From Heine's Book of Songs, translated by Charles G. Leland, 1864, pp. 71-72. This is more loyal to the original, but not a singable translation.

Just come across this website while looking for information on
a recording of On Wings of Song. I've told my family that I want it sung at my funeral - which I hope won't be for a long time yet.
These are the words that we learned at school in the late 1940's.

TO: PEACE: Thanks for the lead to Doris Day. I spent hours today reviewing all her songs from her movies and albums, and one finally struck me "Til my love comes to me". I recognized that as the last line in the song I am looking for. It comes from the 1954 movie "Young at Heart" with Frank Sinatra. So far no luck in coming up with the lyrics on-line, they just want to sell me the dvd, which I might do.

I, too, have been looking for familiar English words to this beautiful melody, but have not found any that fit with the first line that I seem to remember. "The night is dressed up for dreaming ----" is the extent of my recollection. Anyone remember those words?

That's a better version. I copied the other versions and offered them to the music teacher (who'd asked for them in the first place) and she took one look and said 'I can't teach those words!'
They're a bit too sexy and suggestive for kids, I guess.
I'll see if she could use Ian's words.
