I did a solofest version of this song that went:

on wings of song through dreamland
a love affair of ...
.... stream land
....

And then it talked about Palm trees and lotus flowers and a sister but that's all I remember.

This thread helped jog my memory a little but none of these are what I remember. I guess there are multiple versions that make this way harder to find than I previously thought.

I wish I kept the lyrics.

Does anyone know this arragement? I've tried googling for the lyrics but nothing has worked so far. I'll keep trying, and maybe ask my old teacher who gave out the sheet music.

On wings of song far sailing to distant lands I'll go
and there a dream land unveiling I'll wend by the Ganges flow.
A garden with fair roses laden lies bathed in moonlight clear....

I remember singing this song in 6th grade. It went something like:

On wings of song I will take thee to India love we will go.
There a sweet garden I will make thee where Ganges' deep waters flow.
A garden there brightly is shining beneath the moon so clear
and lotus flowers are all pining to see there sister dear
and lotus flowers are pining to see there sister dear.

The violets whisper and thither while roses tell stories of love
eyeing the stars as they glitter and merrily twinkle above.
The freely happily ranges the gentle Willie gazelles
and in the distance Ganges flows on now hears them well
and in the distance Ganges flows on now hear them well.

This is to my best recollection.

a very good rendition including written lyrics on Carol Lenner 1935 production recording on youtube at be patient as other songs must be heard first.

These lyrics are closer to what I learned at Dore School about 1947-1950 from Music Teacher Miss Cruikshank. I was a boy soprano at the time (out of breath now for even a broken baritone) and sang this with the school choir. I remember the emphasis my teacher put on holding "waiting" for nine bars.

This is as much as I can remember

V1: My mind in fancy wanders
In woods and fields of Spring
I see the birds and the blossoms
That showers in April bring
The starlings, they scold and they chatter
The bluebells bow to the breeze
The wind is softly singing a message to the trees
The wind is softly singing a message to the trees

V2 - can't remember!

V3: At night time the woods are sleeping
Bright shines the moon above
__________________laughter
Of children's play that they love
Of children's play that they love
Of play they love

I believe the musical director of Dowlais Male Choir in South Wales will have the full lyrics to this version - perhaps contact her?

On wings of song I'll bear thee
Through woods and fields of Spring
I see the birds and the blossom
The showers that April brings
The starlings they scold and they chatter
The bluebells bow to the breeze
The wind is softly singing a message
to the trees
The wind is softly singing
a message to the trees

As sung by the Co-op Choir in the 1950s - Derby. Mr Morecroft conducted. Can't remember further verses.

On wings of song uplifted,
Fair spirit, fly thither with me!
Where golden sands are drifted,
To rest in a pearl-paved sea.
Where gardens of crimson glisten
Beneath the moon's pale eye,
And lotus blossoms listen
While sister sprites fleet by...
While sister sprites fleet by.

The violets whisper caresses
And gaze toward the starry height,
Roses in close-woven tresses
Are breathing tales of delight.
There sinking in contemplation
Beneath the palms we'll lie,
And drink the inspiration
Of thoughts that cannot die...
Of thoughts that cannot die.

That's the way I learned it from my mama.

I have this in a book called Sing Care Away, Book 1 published by Novello & Co Ltd, possibly in the 1950's (according to the Australian National Library). It was the book used by at least one of our high school music teachers. Some of the songs are still among my favourites, 50 years later.

The lyrics are credited to N. MacFarren. They are the same lyrics as those posted by GUEST,J. Theakston, on 01 Oct 07 - 06:14 PM

On wings of song I'll bear thee,
Enchanted realms to see.
Come O' my love, prepare thee,
In dreamland to wander with me.

The only differences in the lyrics are:

Instead of "A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells." my book has "The rushing ..."
A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells.

And in the last verse the second last line changes from "And joy will never fade" to "That joy will never fade". Then the last line is just "never fade".

So my book has it as:

And there we will sit and rest us,
Under the palm tree's shade,
And dream that love has blessed us,
And joy will never fade,
That joy will never fade.
never fade.

From what I remember of the Geehl arrangement: -

My mind in fancy wanders in woods and fields of spring
I see the birds and the blossoms that showers in April bring
The starlings they scold and they chatter, the bluebells bow to the breeze
The wind is softly singing a message to the trees (X2)

[Cant remember second verse]

At nighttime the woods are sleeping; bright shines the moon above
(Something something) laughter, of children’s play that they love
Of children’s play that they love
Of play they love

This is what I remember of Verse 2

Verse 2

The summer flowers are stirring
And wake from their winter sleep
xxxxxxxxxx
The chattering stream runs deep
xxxxxxxxxxxx

Bright shines the moon
And children dream of laughter
Of children's play that they love
Of children's play    that they love
Of Play,   they love

I am trying to find the full lyrics to the song "On Wings of Song", which has these lyrics within the song, but I think I have mixed verse lines up....
On Wings of Song I'll bear thee, away to fairy land,
Where lies my sweet scented garden, awaiting your dainty hand.
The moon beams are filling my garden, with silvery lanterns of light
And Lotus flowers are waiting to welcome thee tonight

On wings of song I’ll bear thee, enchanted realms to see.come o my love prepare thee in dreamland to wander with me.A garden I know of roses, lies bathed in moonlight clear.upon the lake reposes to greet her sister dear, upon the lake reposes .......and there neath the palms reclining, free from the world we’ll seem, and worldly cares entwining shall fade away in dreams....

These are the lyrics, but not all of them, from the version of On Wings of Song, that I remember singing....

On wings of song I'll bear thee away to fairy land.
There/Where lies my sweet-scented garden awaiting your dainty hand.
The moonbeams are filling my garden with silvery lanterns of light.
And lotus flowers are waiting to welcome thee tonight.
And lotus flowers are waiting to welcome thee tonight.

The rose and violet blossom, for thee in this garden so rear
Stars are above in the heaven, aglow in the scent-laden air.
Away in the distant shadows the woodland creatures play
And softly glides the river rejoicing on its way
And softly glides the river rejoicing on its way.
