On wings of song I'll bear thee away to fairy land. There/Where lies my sweet-scented garden awaiting your dainty hand. The moonbeams are filling my garden with silvery lanterns of light. And lotus flowers are waiting to welcome thee tonight. And lotus flowers are waiting to welcome thee tonight. The rose and violet blossom, for thee in this garden so rear Stars are above in the heaven, aglow in the scent-laden air. Away in the distant shadows the woodland creatures play And softly glides the river rejoicing on its way And softly glides the river rejoicing on its way. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On Wings of Song (Heine, Mendelssohn) From: Helen Date: 27 May 19 - 11:33 PM I have this in a book called Sing Care Away, Book 1 published by Novello & Co Ltd, possibly in the 1950's (according to the Australian National Library). It was the book used by at least one of our high school music teachers. Some of the songs are still among my favourites, 50 years later. The lyrics are credited to N. MacFarren. They are the same lyrics as those posted by GUEST,J. Theakston, on 01 Oct 07 - 06:14 PM On wings of song I'll bear thee, Enchanted realms to see. Come O' my love, prepare thee, In dreamland to wander with me. The only differences in the lyrics are: Instead of "A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells." my book has "The rushing ..." A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells. And in the last verse the second last line changes from "And joy will never fade" to "That joy will never fade". Then the last line is just "never fade". So my book has it as: And there we will sit and rest us, Under the palm tree's shade, And dream that love has blessed us, And joy will never fade, That joy will never fade. never fade. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On Wings of Song (Heine, Mendelssohn) From: GUEST,Jessamine Ragland Date: 27 May 19 - 09:53 PM On wings of song uplifted, Fair spirit, fly thither with me! Where golden sands are drifted, To rest in a pearl-paved sea. Where gardens of crimson glisten Beneath the moon's pale eye, And lotus blossoms listen While sister sprites fleet by... While sister sprites fleet by. The violets whisper caresses And gaze toward the starry height, Roses in close-woven tresses Are breathing tales of delight. There sinking in contemplation Beneath the palms we'll lie, And drink the inspiration Of thoughts that cannot die... Of thoughts that cannot die. That's the way I learned it from my mama. |

And then it talked about Palm trees and lotus flowers and a sister but that's all I remember. This thread helped jog my memory a little but none of these are what I remember. I guess there are multiple versions that make this way harder to find than I previously thought. I wish I kept the lyrics. Does anyone know this arragement? I've tried googling for the lyrics but nothing has worked so far. I'll keep trying, and maybe ask my old teacher who gave out the sheet music. |
Subject: Lyr Add: TILL MY LOVE COMES TO ME (from Doris Day) From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 14 - 08:51 PM TILL MY LOVE COMES TO ME Written by Ray Heindorf & Paul Francis Webster Based on Mendelssohn's "On Wings of Song" As recorded by Doris Day The night is dressed up for dreaming And on the meadows below A star falls out of the heavens And fades in the afterglow The wind embraces the willow The ivy clings to the tree My arms are waiting to hold my love Wherever my lover may be And so I'll walk in the moonlight Till my love comes to me |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On Wings of Song (Heine, Mendelssohn) From: GUEST Date: 03 Feb 14 - 05:19 AM These are the lyrics I know & sang as a teenager, & that were on the sheet music I had: On Wings of Song On song's bright pinions ranges My airy flight with thee, Hence! to the bank of the Ganges, My loved one, oh, come with me; A garden we'll seek that's perfuming The tranquil midnight air, The lotus flow'rs brightly blooming, Await a sister there, The lotus flow'rs brightly blooming, Await a sister there. Each violet peeps from its dwelling To gaze at the bright stars above, Roses each other are telling, Wild legends of faery and love. The trembling leaves scarcely brushing, Gazelles pause to list to each word, While in the distance rushing The sacred stream is heard, While in the distance rushing The sacred stream is heard. Beneath the tall palm trees sinking, There we will gently rest, From love's pure fountain drinking, We'll dream the dreams of the blest, From love's pure fountain drinking, We'll dream the dreams of the blest. Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG (Heine/Mendelssohn) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Oct 11 - 08:59 AM These lyrics are copied from the liner notes of an album "Love's Old Sweet Songs: Musical Treasures from Victoria Hall" by Donna Bennett, soprano, and Brian Finley, piano (Marquis Classics, 1997). The translator isn't named. ON WINGS OF SONG, Op. 34, No. 2 Felix Mendelssohn, arr. B. Finley/Heinrich Heine I'll bear thee off, my dearest, upon the wings of my song, Off to a spot that I know of, where Ganges rolls along. For there in a beautiful garden, in moonlight still and clear, The lotus flowers blossom, for you, their sister dear! The violets whisper together, and peek at the stars from their dell, And there to each other the roses their sweet-scented fairy-tales tell. The dainty gazelles will listen, and cautiously explore, While aye is heard in the distance the sacred river's roar. And there we shall lie together, there by the palmy streams, In love and peace forever, and dream our happy dreams. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On Wings of Song (Heine, Mendelssohn) From: GUEST,Robert Esch Date: 01 Oct 11 - 05:53 PM I sang this when I was 11 (in 1951), and have been listening to my own recording. Here's what I have heard. But hearing is not one of my best senses at this date! 1. I'll bear thee off my dearest, upon the wings of my song. Off to a spot that I know of, where Gangees roll along. For there in a beatiful garden, where Cynthia rise in state. Along the bosom to thee dear, where vile like praise for him. Where Lotus blossoms are clinging, my darling sister rests. 2. Where violets whisper together, and peep at the stars when they die. And there with each other the roses, their sweet scent of fairy tales tell. The dainty Gazelles will answer, and cautiously implore. While aye is wooing the distant, the sacred rivers roll. While aye is wooing the distant, the sacred rivers roll. 3. And there we shall lie together, there by the flowering breeze. In love and peace forever, and dream our happy dream. And dream our happy dream, our happy dream. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG (tr. George H Clutsam) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Mar 10 - 04:17 PM Copied from Thomas A. Copeland's web site at Youngstown State University: ON WINGS OF SONG Translated by George Howard Clutsam On wings of song I'll bear thee, my heart's love, far away, Speeding fast over the palm trees where Ganges' blue waters play. Where hidden in glorious garden, beneath the gleaming moon, The lotus flowers are longing to see their sister soon. The lotus flowers are longing to see their sister soon. The violets smiling and timid greet coyly the stars high above; Roses are whisp'ring in secret their stories of innocent love. And there, in its freedom, wanders the timid, gentle gazelle, While, in the distance, murmurs the flowing stream's soft spell. While, in the distance, murmurs the flowing stream's soft spell. Together we'll rest, beloved, praying the gods will send A dream that knows no waking, a love that knows no end, A love that knows no end, That knows no end. Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG (tr. Paul England) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Mar 10 - 03:56 PM Another version; lyrics copied from The Boy Choir & Soloist Directory: ON WINGS OF SONG Translated by Paul England (1864-1932) On wings of song I'll bear thee, To those fair Asian lands, Where the broad wave of the Ganges Flows on through its flowery strands. For there in a roseate garden, Where the moon-charmed breeze is dumb, Thy lovely kin, the lotus, Wait till their sister come. The lovely lotus are waiting Until their sister come. The violets whisper together, And gaze on the starlit skies, Tenderly swaying, the roses Will mingle their perfumed sighs. Over the leaves come leaping The soft-eyed wary gazelles, And from the sacred river A distant murmur swells. And from the sacred river A distant murmur swells. Beneath the palm-tree shadow, Stretch'd on the breathing flow'rs, We'll drink the love-laden silence, And dream through blissful hours. And dream through blissful hours, dream through the hours! The Lotus flowers awaken, To greet their sister, dear The nodding violets unbending disclose fond secrets of love. Roses sweet perfume are sending to hail the bright stars above. Then, soft, in covet hiding, the shy gazelle will be. The river slowly gliding flows out to meet the sea. The river slowly gliding flows out to meet the sea. And there, 'neath the palms reclining, so free from the world we'll seem. All earthly cares entwining shall fade away in dream. Shall fade, shall fade, shall fade away in dream. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG I'D BEAR THEE From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jul 09 - 12:03 PM From Heinrich Heine's Memoirs by Heinrich Heine, edited by Gustav Karpeles, translated by Gilbert Cannan (New York: John Lane Company, 1910): On wings of song I'd bear thee Away whom I loved so well; Away to the Ganges' prairie; I know where 'tis fair to dwell. There in the still noon is sleeping A gorgeous-flowered grove; The lotus-flowers are keeping Watch for the sister they love. The violets prattle and flutter, And gaze at the stars above ; In secret the roses utter Their fragrant stories of love. Lithe, gentle gazelle, come bounding Nearer to list to the rose; Afar you may hear resounding, The Sacred Stream as it flows. There will we slumber, sinking Beneath the palm to rest; Love and repose in-drinking, And dreaming dreams thrice-blest. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG, BELOV'D ONE (Todhunter) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:58 AM From Heine's Books of Songs by Heinrich Heine, translated by John Todhunter (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1907): IX. ON wings of song, Belov'd One, Away I'll waft thee, to where I know in the plains of the Ganges A secret nook most fair. There sleeps a rich-blossoming garden, Calm in the still moonlight: The lotus-flowers are awaiting Their dearest Sister to-night. The violets laugh as they prattle, And gaze on the stars in their spheres Odorous legends the roses Breathe low in each others' ears. There bound, and stand shyly listening, The gentle timid gazelles; Afar, from the sacred river, The waves' deep murmur swells. There, under the palms reclining, We'll drink, by the sacred stream, Of love and rest in full measure, And blissful dreams will we dream. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG AND MUSIC From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:52 AM From Real and Ideal by John William Weidemeyer (Philadelphia: Frederick Leypoldt, 1865): ON WINGS OF SONG AND MUSIC. ON wings of song and music, Beloved, I'd waft thee away, To the flowering banks of Ganges, Forever blooming and gay. Its floral realm shall receive thee, Illumed by the silent moon; There the lotus flowers are longing To greet their companion soon. There violets nod and flutter, Or gaze on the stars above; And roses, with eloquent fragrance, Recount their legends of love. Within the spice-groves are lurking The innocent, cunning gazelles; And distant is heard the rushing Of the holy tide, as it swells. Under the palm will we linger, Housed from the open skies, In raptures of love and contentment— Dreaming with open eyes. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ON WINGS OF SONG From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jul 09 - 11:43 AM Yet another one, from A Harvest of German Verse selected and translated by Margarete Anna Adelheid Münsterberg (New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1916): ON WINGS OF SONG On wings of song--ah, lightly, Heart's dearest, I bear thee away: A nook is beckoning brightly Where Ganges' waters play. A blooming red garden is lying In moonlight calm and clear, The lotos flowers are sighing For thee, their sister dear. The violets banter and slyly They peep at the star-rays pale, The roses are whispering shyly Some fragrant fairy-tale. The gentle gazelles come leaping, And hearken what we say; The sacred river is sweeping And murmuring far away. Beloved, let us be sinking Under the shady palm, The blissful quiet drinking And dreaming dreams of balm. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On Wings Of Song (Eng) From: GUEST,J. Theakston Date: 01 Oct 07 - 06:14 PM Here are the traditional, original English lyrics written by Heinrich Heine. On wings of song I'll bear thee, Enchanted realms to see. Come O' my love, prepare thee, In dreamland to wander with me. A garden I know of roses, by moonlight silvered o'er. Upon the lake reposes, A balmy lotus flower. Upon the lake reposes, A balmy lotus flower. The bending violets whisper, their fragrant secrets there. Waiting for thee, their sister, Still closed are the blossoms rare. With wistful glances are peering, The bright-eyed, slender gazelles. A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells. A rushing tide is nearing upon the breeze it swells. And there we will sit and rest us, Under the palm tree's shade. And dream that love has blessed us. And joy will never fade. And joy will never fade. Will never fade. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: On Wings Of Song (Eng) From: Little Robyn Date: 31 May 04 - 04:00 PM That's a better version. I copied the other versions and offered them to the music teacher (who'd asked for them in the first place) and she took one look and said 'I can't teach those words!' They're a bit too sexy and suggestive for kids, I guess. I'll see if she could use Ian's words. Thanks, Robyn |
