Just got a new box, so I assumed that I had messed something up setting it up...normally a reasonable assumption. Missed you.

Every cloud has a silver lining. I was away at Bedworth Folk Festival all weekend, and was quite relieved that I didn't have to spend twelve hours online to catch up on all the threads I'd missed. Can you arrange for the Cat to be down whenever I'm at a festival! :-)

God! How I missed the daily fix of Mudcat. I thought, how will I manage if it has gone for good. So relieved to have you back. Will now go and sacrifice the next door's cat to the gods of the net.

yegads, Max - no need to apologize! Now - if you had accidently attached SMELLNET to the 'cat and suddenly we were all being overwhelmed with an authentic reproduction of Cletus the day before his annual bath; *THAT* would be something to apologize for!

Yep, Seamus. We figured it out................But don't pull this load of shite too often, Sir Max. I was reduced to hanging drywall, getting the checkbook caught up and balanced (fiscal responsibility........yechhhh....), practicing on my new bouzouki......talking to real people...........shit, let's not do this too often, OK buddy?

Now, anwer the one question I need answered.............DID YOU GET A FECKIN' DEER, OR NOT??????????
All the best,

Mick

Hi, Max, and a hearty welcome back! So where did you go for the Bambi hunt? Y'know you coulda just driven down to Fairmount Park (in Philadelphia PA [for the non-locals]) and thinned the ranks of the unwanted "citified" deer, but what fun would that be? ...well, I suppose you could've harassed a protester or two...

And lucky you, the weather is still warm enough to cook those Bambi-burgers outdoors on the grill!

Anyway, no apologies are necessary for taking a trip, silly! Thanks for bringing "shorty" back up, and thanks for all you do to keep us 'Catters together!

Sharon

We call this part of the year "camp". My father started going when he was 12. I started going when I was 12. Started out a shack, with no electricity. Now we have a cabin made of cinder blocks heated only by an oil drum converted into a kettle stove. Built that in 1976. We do have electricity, but little else other than 6 bunks and a fold out couch. Beautiful land that we know like the back of our hand. 8 guys in our camp that we only see this one week a year. Couple other camps with guys we only see once a year. Love these guys. We spend the days hunting deer and nights playing cards and telling stories, eating like kings and taking turns doing dishes. I'm pretty sure that all 8 of us would quit any job that wouldn't let us take that week off.

I've lived in over 20 places in 5 states over the last 29 years. Never more that 3 years in any one place. But Camp has always been the same. It's the closest thing I have to roots.

The weather was very unusual for this week. Usually it's so cold you can't sit still, so the deer are always on the move. This year it was 50 degrees, and everyone on the mountain sat still, so the deer traveled their usual routes. Very unusual first day of Buck. But boy was it beautiful. Had a great time with the boys, and a great time in the woods. I probably would have only pulled the trigger if it were a 12 point albino deer. Didn't have the time or money to deal with the meat. Kind of like fishing with no bait on the hook, I wasn't there to kill a deer. About half our guys are like that.

So no, no deer.

Came home last from a road trip to Vermont with a friend (hunting and gathering at the Vermont Country Store). It was after dark and, about 3 houses away from home, there was a large form standing in the middle of the road, comtemplative sort of. Deer, of course. I'm always surprised when I actually SEE one during hunting season, even at night.

It's been so warm here that a friend who asked to hunt on our land (33 acres of trees and rock) hasn't been out. Hope he can and does and gets his deer, because I've been venison starved for way too long!

Really glad to have you and Mudcat back, Max. And no apologies needed, either. Curmudgeon and I really appreciate your time and dedication. And with no Mudcat for a couple days, Tom could concentrate on eBay (getting rid of cubic footage).

Thanks, Max, for all that you do!

Bat Goddess

Good thing it's not my responsibility. "Trailer" (no heat, no plumbing) lasts EIGHT weeks here and I go at least every Thursday to Saturday. No deer for the same reason. Haven't had the heart to take one in over five years. But, grouse, thick as lice this year. Don't take a sacred albino... bad luck... but that twelve pointer sounds tempting.

I do have the help forum and tried all three servers. I got in on Wednesday and Thursday morning by using Ragtime, but for Friday evening - Tuesday morning had nothing at all.... despite trying several servers and other back doors..... a whole 3 days without you - just as well I was with Snuffy at Bedworth, or else I'd be a basket case by now!!!

Never worn a skirt in me life, Mick-aleen. May be losing the bass drum before long and going back to snare - at least for solo contests.

Dusting off my "BIG March Strathspey and Reel" (changing the reel, probably) - sticking with "Clan MacRae Society" for the march. Reel, I've got two to choose from, depends on which piper agrees (can be bribed) to play... PeteBoom returns to Grade 1 solos after a couple of years hiatus - can't let the young rug rats be the ONLY Grade 1 soloists in town. These old hands don't have the speed they once did, but they got finesse that the wee ones don't understand yet - when they do I'll lose fer certain, until then, I'll give a run fer the money...

When that happens, look out bodhran thumpers, here I come...

Pete

I KNEW YOU COULDN'T RESIST ANSWERING THAT ONE.............ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

I have noticed the young ones gettin' a wee bit cocky (dangerous for a man in a kilt.......take that on any one of the several levels that it was intended to cover...LOL.) on their drumming, my friend. I am seeing less of the "Master Po" reverence toward you, and more of the "I can take the auld bastard" kind o' look in their eyes. Give 'em a wee hidin' in competition, Pete, and do it for all us auld barstards....hahaha.

All the best,

Mick
